Netizen The game looks much cooler than SC1 Netizen SC1 is 10 fucking years old you dumbshit ofcourse it looks cooler. Netizen In SC1 you get 8 minerals, but in SC2 you get 5 minerals so in the early game it feels, really really really slow. Netizen I'm sorry, but the translated names are so so so bad. Netizen Please remove Korean Version blizzard plz. Netizen LOL Collosus = "BIGTHING." ITS NOT EVEN A NOUN LOLLLLLLLLL Netizen God the translated names are just terrible. Leave them in English or do it properly. Netizen Lost temple is alot different than SC1. The ramps in 12 oclock are placed differently. Netizen I waited in line for this shit. Let me tell you, the game exceeded my expectations. Netizen lucky you I wanna playyy Netizen When you're playing the game, you don't feel it but when watching it, since it is in 3D it kinda makes you feel sick after watching alot Netizen MBS does not feel bad. It actually feels decent, and I support it. Netizen Terran = Protoss >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Zerg. Zerg is just so bad. Banlings are such a clutch unit it's absolutely ridiculous. Without banelings Zerg is so so so bad. Netizen 2 Gas at start = Leta is happy Netizen The interface is just like WC3. Netizen I think the game would be much more fun if you can press Z once and make 12 zealots off 12 gateways instead of pressing Z 12 times Netizen ^^^ Hey fag, gtfo Netizen Do people really have problems with names? All you need to know are the hotkeys so who cares? Netizen I just came back, let me tell you it is AWESOME. But Protoss is too cool. EVERYBODY PLAYED PROTOSS. So I have no idea how the other races are LOLOLOL Netizen SC2 has one race only, Protoss. The game is fucking built for protoss players Netizen While watching this, I thought to myself "This game cannot fail in any way possible" The game is just too good to be called a failure Netizen ZERG IS SO BAD OH MY EYES Just so so so terrible Netizen Zerg needs so much help. After banelings, they have NOTHING. Netizen Nullifiers are just so great. They are cheap, not really overpowered and even without an upgrade, they are so useful. 50min 100 gas for magic unit with great use in all aspects? So good. Netizen I was worried 3D will make the game blurry and unreadable. But the game is incredibly Clean. Even in the largest battles spectators can tell what is going on! Netizen THE NAMES ARE SO BAD. PETITION TO GO AGAINST KOREAN VERSION Netizen LOL THE NAMES ARE JUST BAD. So gay Netizen Terran and Toss names are okay... But the Zerg names... "UNDERGROUND CONQUERER"? JUST CALL IT A GODDAMN LURKER Netizen "Working Insect" = Drone OH GOD AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Netizen "Big Space Ship" = Carrier LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL Netizen OH GOD THE NAMES ARE KILLING ME AHAHAHHA Netizen "Venomous Insect" = Baneling NOOOOO Netizen Baneling is such a cool name WHYYYYY Netizen oh god Working Insect is such a bad name lolololol
So basically, Korean people find Protoss just too appealing while Zerg and Terran lack so much.
I'll be posting more netizen comments later!

Overlord = 대군주
Which literally translates to LARGE KING Or it means a Higher Status King (WHICH MAKES NO MORE SENSE BECAUSE YOU ARE KING)
|
lol the korean names are hilarious
i wonder what they will be in Chinese
|
ahaha I absolutely love the korean names ahahahhahah Big Space Ship ahahah and Large King ahahah Fantastic ! Protoss seems to be the Easy Mode again :/
|
Why they have to translate the names? Koreans survived SC1 with no problems.
|
sigh. since protoss are easy mode in BW, Guess thats why theres so many in the OSL/MSL finals right now..
And I guess thats why they have dominated almost every league from 2001 to 2007, winning 90% of them.
Oh wait..
|
Sounds like zerg really need help as every match up see's banelings as a requirement.
|
sigh and I thought iccup was bad with all the toss players...oh boy...

|
This was incredibly funny to read, thanks for the translation =)

Hopefully they will not use the Korean version at the tournaments.

wow god another reason why I should stick to English versions... Korean version of WC3 was pretty bad. (directly translated names doesn't suit me)
Mrhoon where's the source link? I want to see lol

By not changing the names, millions of Korean kids get free english lessons.

LOL! @ comments XD, good to see their points of view xD

Lol i seriously wonder why you'd change the names!? I mean god... most of the names don't mean anything to us ether!? Lol whats a baneling.. zellot... vulture... Also, if they're going to change unit names, why not go all out and change the Race names too? I mean god, they're just as indecipherable as the Unit names!?
|
lol korean comments are always funny to read. No comment about ricecakes this time though? :/

I'm worried about that netizen that said the game makes you feel sick. This is a Korean kid talking. If he feels sick from watching the game I would probably pass out or something like that.

I feel sick after watching some 300+ APM FPVODs already, so no difference there.

I'm wondering why blizzard would do such a bad job of translating the names... doesn't seem like them

Yeh, the best players in the world are the best test of a race being "easy mode" below that level. Good job witty sarcastic man.
Thanks for the translation!

It just takes getting used to. That kid could also be a sissy

Because it's not Blizzard that does the translation. It's the local developer. For example polish version of WC3 was absolutely brilliant in terms of translation (and I friggin hate localized game content), they even changed the unit jokes to fit our reality better.

From DCinside SC2 forum:
http://gall.dcinside.com/list.php?id=starcraft2&no=2379&page=2
summary of his post:
-interface is streamlined so unnecessary micro is no longer needed -idle workers are displayed like WC3 on top left corner -workers now spread automatically when selected in group to mine mineral -rally point can be set to resources and the worker produced will mine automatically -multiple unit can be selected beyond the 12 sc1 limit -buildings can be selected in groups to produce units. building with the least queue time will be selected to produce first when you have the buildings in a group -no more unit pathfinding glitches. they also move much more smoother in groups. -sc2 is much faster paced than sc1 in general -mineral mining reduced to 5 (from 8) and gas to 4 (from 8). gas usage is more prevalent in sc2 and you'll always be short of it. -terran lifted buildings move much faster -you can tilt the view like WC3 -units are relatively easy to recognize.

You really, really, really need to play some Diablo 2 in the german version.
The bad, bad, bad translation is legendary.

I doubt true localization would have begun already since the game is still in beta and lots of things are subject to change, so I wouldn't be surprised if they just did the translations in house and that explains why they are awful

Manitou I know they use translation companies to do the actual translations. But they must have some koreans working for blizzard who are able to check those translations. Translation companies won't have the context/knowledge for proper translations I imagine.

German versions are almost always horrible... Not only in computer games... Just look what they did to Southpark, Heroes, etc etc... Diablo 2 was actually pretty ok for a german version, but ofc english still is much better...

I still laugh at Hexenmeister from WoW. The german dubs for most shows I've seen aren't great either. Some translations are just silly as well. On one show I watched in Austria someone said (in English) "She's a complete bitch!" and the german subtitles said "Here's my Aunt!".

people have been saying there is formation movement in sc2. if you can't turn it off(can in wc3) then you will have to use 1a2a3a for zealots, stalkers, immortals.

anyway, "working insect" is what a drone is..so there's nothing wrong with that translation...
baneling, it's just a retarded name, imo, and venomous insect, that's well...is the explosion poisonous? looks like a kindof explosive acid or something to me... i don't get how it can be a VENOMOUS insect...venom is poison that comes through the teeth... i think acidic insect or something like that would be better...right? or maybe viral exploders or something...somthing that fits the name...
carrier is an alright name and i suppose big spaceship is ok...but they're totally different names! i don't like that. there's nothing wrong with the collosus name as far as i can tell...
lurker and underground conquerer do seem like different names...but i think it's probably ok in this instance...but wouldn't it be a better name for the infestor...since it can move around while burrowed? or can lurkers do this too?
|
LOL 2 gas sure does make Leta happy
|
I'm always against translations in games, because a big part of it involves the translation of names, and they always fail to express the true meaning and sounding of the word in it's original language... I don't know, I think no matter what, no matter how accurate, you can never have a translation that is as good as the original, so why bother doing it? English makes things sound just better, I wouldn't ever play a portuguese version of SC2.
Korean netizen comments seem pretty positive, I'm really shocked by their response. That's a really good thing I guess.
People shouldn't worry too much about Z being weak on the current build... Balance comes and goes, I would be shitting my pants only if people expressed anger towards the core game mechanics, and that's not the case. Balance is really something easy to adjust by patching.
|
as long as they dont change the naming for plagu im fine with these changes. Half the reason i watch starcraft is to hear commentators say plagu.

Polish words are about 40% longer(I remember that from info about translating 8Mile), sentence structure is different... and to communicate with the rest of the world you need to know English names >.< Even with the best translation, there will be no as strong, thrilling emotions, feelings contained even in the simple "yessir". I like how Polish version of W40K II was done: audio lines of the characters weren't touched and Polish subtitles were simply added... it only misses repeat button P

Okay, I appreciate people trying to explain to people why the Korean names are awful, but... If you translate something to another language, then translate it back to the original, it will ALWAYS sound much worse. It's very funny and entertaining, but it's not accurately representative AT ALL of how the unit names sound in Korean. They are bad, yes, but it's because of the nuances that can't be understood unless you know Korean.

I don't really understand why they can't keep the names from the original version and just modify the interface. I'm not a big fan of other language versions either. The target audience for the game are teenagers and young people and they shouldn't have big problems with understanding english.
Besides, the names are hillarious. Massing " BIG SPACE SHIPS" is going to be really awesome now.

Ok now i am sick of that protoss 1a2a3a bullshit. Protoss might be the easiest race to bash noobs, but it is the hardest race to master. Why can't people just go with: all the races are balanced! Isn't that actually why is SC1 the best RTS game??? Maybe maps are imba, but not the races.

The fact that they keept the names in RoC doesn't mean it couldn't be anything legal. Doesn't make sense at all to change names for units after so long, just because you come up with a new one (not to mention flying machine sounds pretty awful imo). I'm guessing they were either approached by GW or asked themselves if a namechange wouldn't be the safest way. Ohwell I guess it's all speculation :-)

It was a rhetorical question, pointing out that the english names don't necessarily mean anything either (though he does seem unaware that the word "zealot" existed long before Blizzard). Rant is weak

And since your obviously so much more enlightened than me, would you like to share with the group what 'Banelings, Zellosts and Vultures are in relation to the English language? My point is, they're just as meaningless in Korean as they are in English. Prehapse its just your fanatical SC fan-boy heart that makes you assume that those words have always been an essential part of the English language. So, before StarCraft, what exactly is this meaning that my noobie brain obviously cannot fathom?

Gladly.
The whole point of language is to communicate things between people. This also gives the side effect of giving "things" an identity by naming them. Calling something "Big Thing" doesn't have the same impact as naming something "Colossus." Big thing is generally an adjective, Colossus can be used as a noun and gives something identity.
You tell someone who plays SC HEY LOOK AT THE ZEALOT they will know exactly what you are talking about. Language is very rarely meaningless.

Dictionary.com is your friend.
Baneling + Show Spoiler + Bane –noun 1. a person or thing that ruins or spoils: Gambling was the bane of his existence. 2. a deadly poison (often used in combination, as in the names of poisonous plants): wolfsbane; henbane. 3. death; destruction; ruin. 4. Obsolete. that which causes death or destroys life: entrapped and drowned beneath the watery bane. Origin: bef. 1000; ME; OE bana slayer; c. ON bani death, murderer, OFris bona murder, OS bano murderer, OHG bano slayer, bana death; akin to OE benn, Goth banja wound
-ling a suffix of nouns, often pejorative, denoting one concerned with (hireling; underling), or diminutive (princeling; duckling).
Seems pretty straight forward to me.
Zealot + Show Spoiler +Zealot 1. a person who shows zeal. 2. an excessively zealous person; fanatic. 3. (initial capital letter) a member of a radical, warlike, ardently patriotic group of Jews in Judea, particularly prominent from a.d. 69 to 81, advocating the violent overthrow of Roman rule and vigorously resisting the efforts of the Romans and their supporters to heathenize the Jews. It can be argued if the use of this word is reference to the zeal these units show in battle (1/2) or a reference to the military group(3).
Vulture + Show Spoiler +Vulture –noun 1. any of several large, primarily carrion-eating Old World birds of prey of the family Accipitridae, often having a naked head and less powerful feet than those of the related hawks and eagles. 2. any of several superficially similar New World birds of the family Cathartidae, as the turkey vulture. 3. a person or thing that preys, esp. greedily or unscrupulously: That vulture would sell out his best friend. As you are probably aware, a lot of military and commercial air vehicles (and even ground) are named after birds. Eg Bowing, Nigthawk, and even 'Bird of Prey' from Star Trek (lol).
