Warcraft 3 had a reward system applied to the metagame level. Players could unlock icons for winning a certain number of games. Starcraft 2 will feature Achievements giving you titles for completing certain tasks. But I am wondering if it is possible to expand upon the metagame reward system.
What if players could unlock new skins for units by winning games. Perhaps players could purchase skins from some kinda B.Net shop with points earned from tournaments or AMM wins.
Unique skins would not be usable in Tournament games (so everything is competitively fair) but would be useable in other AMM games. Here are some ideas. Feel free to post your own ideas for unique skins.
Carrier= Original "Fat Banana" Carrier model
Archon= Dark Archon
Dark Templar= Scythe Dark Templar (Standard would be one blade version). Also Boros Dark Templar
Ghost= Female Ghost
Tank= SC1 version
Raven=Nomad construction version (but remade to look cooler)
Thor= Flak cannon version
One other things. Skins should absolutly, positively, NOT be collector's edition only offers. Nothing makes me madder than forcing players to pay extra for in-game elements like this.

12 million people play WoW. It's popular, get over it.
As for the topic.
Maybe ... but I'd rather see like, different colours or something.. something minor. New models could create confusion.

Sigh, sadly there are enough people like you that I actually will go ahead and remove that WOW part.

Besides, Blizzard could just release these alternate models/skins in a regular basis for the map makers.

I like the idea, but new unit models might cause a bit of confusion. Skins would be nice tho, or anything that is visable but not distracting or confusing for those who have not seen it before. Maybe - New possible shapes for your teams emblem (if its not 100% modifiable anyway). - Different decals on buildings (like the word 'bar' on the merc haven or a different model dancing on the top). - New team colors as mentioned above - An emote (like a smily or a star or whatever) before your name in chat or purchasable emoticons for use in chat - The ability to choose the color of your blood (lol) when your units die - The ability to purchase a new look or color for the harvested gas and minerals Can't think of much else right now

What amm games are there besides ladder?

lol sorry meant tournament. It depends how much of a difference they make to gameplay. If its small (like difference between the dark templar models) then maybe the skins could be used in all games. Details is also a really cool idea. Could be kinda a prestige thing.

Simply having achievements like "win X games" etc will keep people alot of people playing forever.

I'm interested in the really difficult ones like "win 50 games in a row"

Win 3 games in a row with a maxed supply army.

Win a match without ever increasing supply :D

you forget that the only reason the icons were something you would want in WC3 was to show other people your rank, not be something to look at.

This is acceptable as long as it's client-side only. It is inefficient, confusing, and unnecessary for a player to have to see the opponent's units or buildings in some silhouette or color scheme that they register even .2 seconds more slowly than normal.
I suppose minor changes like team color and blood color are tolerable, but any new models and skins are a different can of worms.
But really, the incentive to advance achievements to apply these in AMM games will be minimal when map-makers should offer them in UMS.
Since the benefit to players is negligible, I think this is a low priority.

i dunno about changing models, but subtle skin changes could work.
it would have to be kept as options though, so that better players would pick and choose, not just have everything "upgraded"

some kind of reskinning could be nice.
Completely changing the models would be too much imo and confusing for new players, but color changes, skin changes, etc would be a cool addition to work towards.
Even though it was edited out, the wow thing was right. Lots of people like to work towards achievements, and when there's a reward for it like a wow mount or in this case a skin change, it really sweetens the deal.
