2024 Off-season Community Weekly Cups
Week of Jan 6 - January 12
by Wax
Protoss fans got to enjoy a week in the sun, with the faction winning three out of four weeklies—as well as a very intriguing showmatch against Serral.
*Partial brackets may be shown.
Jan 6: WardiTV Mondays #17
Clem got in one victory before leaving Protoss players to take over for the rest of the week, taking down herO 3-1 in the finals of WardiTV Mondays #17 (VOD). Runner-up herO did get a nice semifinal victory against MaxPax—an opponent he usually struggles against—but couldn't put up much resistance at all in the finals (only winning a game where Clem failed a proxy-Barracks cheese).

Jan 6: PiGosaur Cup #14 (partial bracket shown)
With Clem retiring for the day, herO and MaxPax ended up contesting the PiGosaur title for the second week straight. herO looked like he might score his second upset of the week over the Danish Protoss, going up 2-0 early in the series. However, MaxPax held firm to rally from behind, winning in a 3-2 reverse sweep (VOD).

OlimoLeague #235
After losses to Clem and MaxPax in the two previous cups, OlimoLeague must have felt like a welcome reprieve for herO. However, while he made it to the finals without too much trouble, he was immediately pushed to the verge of defeat in the deciding bout against SHIN. herO's attempts to go for fast Fleet Beacon in the first two games fell short, with SHIN ruthlessly punishing him to go up 2-0. However, herO stabilized once he reverted to ground-based play, scoring a reverse-sweep of his own to win the weekly league (VOD).

Jan 10: BASILISK Big Brain Bouts #80
While we typically don't cover showmatches, BASILISK Big Brain Bouts #80 was worth mentioning as it gave us a much-hyped match: Serral vs MaxPax in a best of five!
In a rather eyebrow-raising result MaxPax took a 3-1 victory over the Finnish Phenom (VOD). After narrowly losing a late-game duel on Abyssal Reef in the initial match, MaxPax took control of the series by showing some seamless Stalker-into-Skytoss transitions in the mid-game. In an exceedingly rare occurrence, Serral simply couldn't keep up with the growth of the Protoss and had to GG out.
Also on the BBB card was Davelitoss 3-0 Airneanach, YoungYakov 3-0 Wayne, and Cham 3-1 SpeCial.

Jan 11: Korean Starcraft League #67
herO closed out the week by taking the final singles cup, winning KSL 67 with a tight 3-2 victory over Zoun (VOD). The recently discharged Zoun looked like he might win his first weekly since his return after he took a mid-game lead in game five, but the classic strategy of 'random DT's' gave herO the comeback victory in the end. Still, it was an encouraging showing overall from Zoun, who also took down SHIN and Dark in the lower rounds.

Jan 7: uThermal 2v2 Circuit: January
The recent teamplay revival continued with the uThermal 2v2 Cup, a planned series of monthly tournaments which will hopefully feed into a six-figure grand finals. Things started off with the January tournament, where the team of Spirit-MaxPax triumphed over Clem-Trigger in the finals.
Spirit-MaxPax's strategy of resource feeding for mass early-game Phoenixes proved to be too strong (something avid 2v2 players might have told you was inevitable), running over Clem-Trigger's more conventional play with its mobility (VOD).
