It's a Greatest of All Time list, not a Greatest Since 2018 list.
Or maybe I'm just an amazing demonstration of nostalgia bias!
Well there is one guy who wins much more tournaments and money in half of the time of the other guy... don't know what else to say
That the shallow-as-a-shower depth of competition since the Korean scene collapsed has led to an environment were it's easier to accumulate back-to-back wins than it would be with a fully-functioning scene?
Ah yes that's why Maru is having such an easy time winning tournaments all over the world since the "collapse" ... oh wait
Weird how he didn't even mention Maru. Almost like his point on recency bias was focusing on Maru/Serral is silly

Lo and behold I just came across this video of Serral playing Terran against a nobody Zerg in a Finnish contest. I'll let you watch the series and draw your own conclusion on whether my hunch is justified. Remember this happened around end of '18 when Serral was already placed on a pedestal by many.
this guy just keeps getting wilder
zhugeliang was a 6k zerg 5 years ago and he lost 3-1 to serral's off race which he is not known for investing any time into and the guy thinks this is enough evidence to conclude the best player in the world would be behind like 5 people if he were playing terran from the start
Was it the first time ever when SC2 player won a tournament while serving in the military?
Excellent Joona, bloody excellent! o7
Some more off-duty days (kuntoisuusloma) of training time should be granted for your distinguished, exemplary, and valiant effort!
Too drunken to answer to some misinterpreted comments about Joona's military service. It's easier to quote own comment and point out there was question, I asked.

this balance whining keeps getting crazier
ZhuGeLiang played, and won, matches in nationwars. He was a big part of Finland winning in 2019-beating soO to give his team a 2-1 lead in the final. He's a legit pro and a champion.

All the things people said about ZhuGeLiang besides: What exactly is the point of this? Like what is this supposed to prove, even if it was somehow relevant? Even if Serral couldn't find the exit of his base when playing offrace, it wouldn't matter. You want to prove he would be behind some of the best terrans in the world, which might be true - but that would only mean something if you also think (and can prove) that Maru, Inno and co. would be as succesful if they played Zerg and Protoss. Curious where that "hunch" would come from. What is the most succesful offrace we had in the last ten years? Reynor playing Protoss I assume. But what are these ominous tournaments e.g. Maru won offracing that would make anyone so confident he would still be the 2nd best player ever if he wasn't Terran?
I know the same few people often bring the stupid argument of "yeah, Serrals playstyle only works because he is Zerg" like that someone is "cheating". Sorry, but is no one else profiting from their race? So Maru could play the EXACT same he does right now if he was Protoss? He isn't benefiting from anything the Terran race has to offer? Really?
...sorry, slight ranting, but this is just getting so over the top ridiculous...
I don't think Maru played too well, floating money and not rly following what Serral's game plan would be. And in almost any case, I don't see balance changing a result from 4-0 to 3-4. That said, balance and race does play a big role, would Serral, Rogue and Maru be GOAT contenders, were they Protoss players?, I don't think so..

Thanks. Waiting answer.
In the vast majority of cases, KR players aren’t allowed (like it’s legally forbidden) to compete in tournaments etc? So depending on their situation, they might be able to train on the ladder or whatever, but they can not compete.
So since the majority of pro players in the StarCraft scene who « served in the military » were KR players, none of them could win a tournament while serving in the military.
Tl;dr: maybe, hard to say, but it’s kind of an useless statistic
In late 2017, while Serral was training in Korea for GSL v TW, he topped the ladder with his "Serral" account. Now, that's mindblowing. There was a reddit thread about it that I can't find anymore. He wasn't even in his 2018 form, yet. Dude just travels to the hardest region, then just casually tops its ladder ranking in a few weeks with a non-barcode account. Imagine how much further up he'd be with a barcode account. Well, everyone would know that it's him due to the mmr, so...nevermind.

The Goat thread with Mvp at the top also aged badly. It's pretty natural imo that the Goat list won't be set in stone forever with more tournaments being played

Meanwhile, Maru finishing second, beating a number of top players along the way. He shit the bed in the finals but, hey, only one person can walk away champion in the end. Serral certainly stole the show with his performance, but it's not as if Maru lost in the group stages or something.

There is still time to edit the numbers of the GOAT threads. For example you could switch the numbers #1 and #2 ...

Yup, things can change.
Perhaps in this year's world championship Maru will get his shit together and get it done, perhaps Serral will add another medal to his resume, or herO will finally do it. We dont know.
In order for the GOAT debate to be definitive, the SC2 scene will need to dry out. I, for one, hope that it never happens and that we keep arguing endlessly about the goat.
