I'd honestly be surprised if the average SC2 player used all their vetos or even had the skill and interest to make an informed choice about it. I think map balance hardly matters for players below, say, Master or even low GM. The players below those levels make so many mistakes and lose matches for so many much cruder reasons than the subtleties of map design that the latter scarcely play a role. For example, I rarely play SC2 these days, but when I do, I'm terribly average, hovering somewhere around Diamond, and I almost never veto more than one map, if any, because matches at this level are decided by much dumber stuff, like one player forgetting to scout or playing a totally unfit army composition. The last map I vetoed was Scrap Station back in the day. Things become different, of course, as one moves to higher leagues. But then again, at higher levels it may also become more important to be well-versed in all maps.

I could be wrong! interested in everyones opinion on this

(well except all the damn ZvZ finals will be mostly unaffected by map balance either way lol)

Have they gone risky/whacky at all or is it just a bigger pool of broadly similar maps?
