You didn't translate the format part fully. There are two posibilities. 1) There are more than or equal to 64 people. Bo3, double elimination from the ro4 Maps:Echo(1st), Whirlwind(2nd), and overgrowth(3rd) 2 players each group advances
2) There are less than 64 people. Full league Bo1, 4 players each group advances. (Since there will be 32 players advancing, 8 groups I guess)

Mostly because the format for less than 64 signups doesn't make much sense to me
Well now it makes sense no? :D
Not "It doesn't make sense" as in "They'll have 64 or more signups for sure" but as in "I have no idea what this format is supposed to look like"
WHen there are less than 64 signups there will be n groups with x players each full round robin bo1 with top 4 players advancing. That's how it looks like, no?
wait, are the top 8 players from last season be seeded straight to Code S and the Code S players from last season be seeded to Code A this year? or is this like a complete new season with no seeded players whatsoever?

First season of the year is a clean slate, has been done like this before, I believe both GSL 2014 S1 and 2015 S1 were complete resets.

2016 because LotV came out and 2015 because whatever.

Also don't like it much. But I guess at least it makes sure that the players who get in GSL are in form (I realize this format brings with it the chance to miss out on top players because of an unlucky bracket with 2 top players in it but Code A has the same problem).

Last Code A qualifiers had like 80 sign-ups even though there were already players seeded into Code A and Code S. This time all seeds are reset. Minus retirements I think we still end up with 64+.
Granted the qualifiers will probably be seeded based on 2016 GSL results so most of them will look completely rigged to make sure all big names get through.

I would assume that nobody really thinks he can beat pros, add to that the general state of the korean scene and it doesn't seem to be worth it? Dunno. But yeah 80 is really low indeed :/

Well you have to be Masters+ and travel to the place they're holding the qualifiers in. Many people probably think that getting their ass kicked by a pro/semi-pro in the first round isn't worth the time it takes to actually get there (even though for some of us that would be a dream come true).
I mean if you live a bit away from Seoul it's not worth it to pay for the train to get 2-0'd. Also, GSL qualifiers generally happen on work days. So if you're not a pro already it's hard to have the time off to go play.
Also back in the olden days Artosis actually had the courage to sign up and play in these, that's another one missing.

I mean 80 isn't super low, there were 8 players seeded into Code S and 24 already in Code A from the previous season, so in total it was over 110. That actually is more than the signups they had for the first Code A qualifiers of 2016 where Code A was like 60 people and basically everyone with a recognizable name got into it.

Yeah, I always forget that people have these problems with working days : ) And those are probably even much worse in Korean almost-japan-level-work-crazy culture from what I have heard ...

Khaldor pls
After counting: for 2016 S2, 83 people who signed up were put into the brackets for the qualifier (some no-showed/forfeited as the event went on, but I just counted "successful" sign-ups). S1 was the big qualifier where 60 Code A spots were up for grabs because the seeds got reset, so naturally it had more participants (104). For 2015 S3, 82 people were put into the brackets (so the last season of 15 and 16 were about the same).
If you go back further than that the number of successful sign-ups goes up by about 20 for seasons without seeds getting reset (2015 S2 had 98 players, 2014 S3 103).
So if this season gets something around 100 participants that's pretty good.

Based on what Google Translate gives me for that page, it seems like they're doing away with Code A entirely: - Code A는 예선전으로 대체되지만, 32강으로 집중된 더 많은 정규 리그가 연간 3회 진행됩니다. which translates to - Code A will be replaced by qualifying, but more regular leagues will be held three times a year. Really bad news for the Korean scene if true. Effectively limits the size of the scene to 32 players max.
It would be really interesting to see if any B teamers or even no-name people make it. I suspect that won't be the case though. I'm afraid it'll just be all of the good players from before minus those who retired.
On December 20 2016 08:11 Zavec wrote: The super tournaments will hopefully be big though, wasn't the last one a 64 player?
64 players single elimination. It needs to be this way if there is no code A or B teamer won't play anything else than code B for the entire year.
They're 16-player tournaments.
Really? I guess every B teamer should retire then :/
Do you have a source for this ?
Their site lists pretty much all the info for 2017 GSL including the approximate dates of all tournaments. Shows the formats.
They also say that GSL vs the World will have a 120,000,000 Won prize pool so about 100,000$ but who knows how that will get distributed and who gets to play in that.

Sad.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but GSL asked for that same information years before MMR even got visible in-game. And to my knowledge they don't use it for anything actually important (like seeding top level players) so it really isn't much of a difference if they take MMR or ladder points.
Only 32 guys make it and everybody who doesn't make it will have nothing to play in with actual screen time. Yes there are online cups but it's just not the same. I said it before, i expect a lot of retirements the next few weeks solely based on tomorrows qualifier results.

It was pretty clear there will be lots of retirements the day Proleague disbanded. The GSL format isn't to blame for this the scene just doesn't support the current number of players anymore.

Sure, but only having 32 players getting money through GSL doesn't help. It's just that the qualifier tomorrow decides if you are getting exposure or not. Ofc players will at least try it and if they don't make it i can see there being retirements rather quickly.

Well, I hope those people considering retirement based on the GSL qualifiers used the last few weeks in a sensible fashion and came up with alternatives to what they are currently doing. Otherwise they just wasted their own time by not retiring sooner.

Yeah i imagine most of the 'retirements' will still keep entering qualifiers for things like Code S. All you need to do is win one BO3 and you could be in Code S

Honestly, it's silly that some players only had to win one best-of 3 against a mid-tier opponent to pocket $2,500. If this happened in a foreign tournament, there would be riots.

With this bracket it's kinda hard to take Scarlett making Code S seriously. So I hope if qualifies she has a good performance in the main tournament too.
Also interesting to see professional Overwatch player Myungsik has made Code S.

Well. Maybe they have part-time jobs or don't live in Seoul. Also, the reason that some players had to win only one bo3 is because there were so many walkovers and no-shows.

Yeah it's cool for her and all, but sadly Korean SC2 isn't what it was a few years ago.
Myungsik gonna be the world champ in both esports at the same time, what a guy.

Myungsik's Overwatch team winning anything at all would be more impressive than Myungsik winning the GSL tbh.

Foreigners have part-time jobs too, and don't live conveniently close to tournaments either. This GSL had around a FORTY PERCENT no-show rate. Remember when the community was crucifying the NA scene for tournament no-shows? This GSL qualifier takes it beyond the pale, and don't forget that Korea gets half of all the esports money that Blizzard is dedicating to Starcraft this year.

GSL qualifiers usually have a pretty large number of no-shows. It's an unbroadcasted qualifier not a tournament, so no-shows are to be expected.

That's a fair point, but regardless, a large number of players still decided that it wasn't worth their time to show up and play potentially one or two best of 3's to pocket $2,500.

Well if they had all shown up.. it would have been three or four bo3s. And most of the no-shows were mostly semi-pros / amateurs who probably didn't fancy their chances.

Why would they? I can't imagine the players would want their replays to be available for their Code S opponents to check out. Not to mention casting this would take forever (even just half of it or only the qualifying matches).
Sooo Scarlett is the first foreigner in a StarLeague since Stephano in 2013? I wonder how far she'll manage to go, wouldn't want this to turn out to be a damp squib in the end.

Jim and Scarlett were seeded into the RO32 of the first SSL. Dunno if the RO32 counts in SSL anyways though.

Oh, you're right, I forgot about that. They were, however, seeded and didn't have to go through any qualifiers. But I guess it still has to count as participating in a StarLeague.

What are you talking about? They can if they want to and there are Koreans that do.
Also, Scarlett moved there and lives there now. She is completely able and entitled to be playing in KR tournaments. No need to be a prick about it - she earned this.

Because there's no Code A. They should have substituted it with the qualifiers.

Koreans need a visa to play in foreign tournaments, scarlett doesn't. It's like MC, Yoda etc playing in WCS 2014 just that it's only allowed one way.
I'm not saying she doesn't earn this but it's unfair that it's only allowed one way. The korean scene is already overpopulated if you just take the korean players, if foreigners take away some of the few spots it hurts the korean scene even more.

You know, one of the reasons to cut Code A would have been to save money in as many ways as they can. If they're going to broadcast 32+ qualifying best of 3 matches they might as well have kept Code A.

I've never heard of a WCS player who wanted to play in GSL but had to miss out most of the year because it took him 9 months to get a visa that allows him to stay in Korea long enough to play GSL.
On the other hand, I have heard of TRUE.
The point being, it's so much more difficult for a Korean to be allowed to play WCS than a non-Korean to be allowed to play GSL.

I think part of the reason Neeb went back to the USA was because he couldn't overstay his visa, hence why he's not in this GSL. I could be wrong on that though.

You don't need a work visa you can just fly out and in every 3 months, something like this anyway. WCS requries an actual work visa, right?
