Whats dramatic bout losing respect? It's not like he was my idol or some shit. He's obviously playing JUST for the money and therefore appears to me like a greedy unmotivated player. You can go highfive the other eg fangirls, you guys made a big deal out of it lol
I will let you in on a secret:
They are all in it for the money. Even the Korean players. Even the players with more “passion” and seeking “glory” are doing it to get paid.
It's like saying everyone that has a job only does it for the money. Some might be progamers for the eventual chance of getting some big cash but honestly what are the chances? I'm sure most of them would make a bunch more if they would just finish school and get a regular job. They are progamers because they love the game and want to have their name remembered.
Few people I know work for free. People go to jobs to make a living. Some people enjoy parts of their jobs, like I do. But I wouldn't show up if they didn't pay me. Progamers put in a lot of effort and work very hard. People who fool themselves saying that the players would do all of this without pay are just naive. If people couldn't make a living at it, there would be no BW or SC2 leagues, end of story.
Could people make full time jobs out of it if they weren't getting paid? no. But there are thousands and thousands of people who dedicate whatever time they have to becoming the best at the games they play without getting paid a cent. The money lets them follow the passion that is already there.
You can’t have both. Either it is an amateur league of people following their part time passion, or it is fully professional where people make a living doing it. For a very long time, many professional athletes were not allowed into the Olympics, because people believed it was unfair. And when it is professional, money matters and it changes the way people think about the game.
And to be frank, I think it means a lot more to Stephano to crush everyone in Europe at SC2 and win IEM than to qualify for the Code S. If it was a choice between GSL or Dreamhack, I think he would choose Dreamhack.

The Korean B-teamers that have never made a dime but still put more hours in than they would have to work at a minimum wage job are in it for the money? Plenty of Koreans choose GSL over foreign tournaments even though the foreign tournaments would be easier money. Tons of great players still went to MLGs when they only had a 5k 1st place prize. Funnily enough Stephano is one of the players who dodged MLGs back then.
Aw man yeah I rmb when MVP dropped out of Code S, then won a tourney overseas, then came back to seed into code S....what a prick right? he should have stayed in Korea and worked his way up. Or that time when leenock wrecked MLG from the open pools, it was so disrespectful. Wait no, I rmb everyone loved him when he crushed his way through. He then came back and went runner up in GSL.
Kid, it's beautiful and fun to compete in MLG/IEM/IPL/NASL---> and WIN. Get over it, GSL isnt the only existing tournament.

You mean MC, not Mvp.
The point still stands. Korean players have done the same thing, but not when they were on EG.
It is not a question about playing for money or not. It is a choice between playing for money on the one hand or getting mauled by guys who 90% of your fans have never heard about on the other.
And all those korean B-teamers who try so hard in korea, I bet you my pants that if they had a team with enough faith in them to win...they'd send them overseas to compete too. And ill bet you my wallet (that comes with my pants) that those players will in turn take it to honor to be sent to compete at IEM's and MLGs.

I like these steaks, lol.
Hopefully more money will be brought in somehow so that B-teamers aren't paid the way they're being paid. : (.

The same what? MC lost to Monster and got knocked out of Code A, it's not like he forfeited, I don't see how that's the same. He just managed to win a spot through the MLG/GSL agreement, dunno how that's relevant at all.

Well, I do feel that it happens a lot. Although, it should be said that Rain did the same thing, choosing a foreign tournament match instead of up/down. It does happen more with foreigners. It's too bad really, it was really fun rooting for Thorzain, Huk, Idra and the other foreigners in the GSL.
Looking at how hard the GSL is to win - or even to stay in Code S, I do understand why they leave the tournament alone though. The commitment is just too big.
To be honest it isn't a silly idea from Stephano, not only scheduling. This way he gets to practice HoTS (once proleague is done) alone, know he is in Code-A which will be in HoTS and have a better shot practicing for IEM. Makes sense to me.

Didn't Rain earn his spot though? Stephano was gifted a spot and then doesn't even play all the way through.

Cool.
Why would GSL assume stephano cant play when his team has signed him up for a match in PL later that very day?

I wouldn't agree. It's certainly the hardest but I wouldn't say it's the most prestigious. I'd give that honour to Dreamhack which continually puts on an amazing show with epic games and makes an effort to be truly worldwide.
Code S simply is not worth it for foreigners. There are a number who could compete (Stephano, Thorzain, Naniwa, Grubby and so on) and will likely continue to compete periodically but they won't work at it for weeks and weeks in order to win one Code S. Seriously. Why would you? There's no money in it, you're in a foreign country far from home and the only reason you're doing it is to satisfy a few stupid fans on a forum who will eviscerate you if you don't win in exactly the fashion they want you to win.
It's not the kind of deal I'd ever do. Especially not if I were as good at the game as Stephano is. I'd be more than happy to make a killing sniping those Koreans brave enough to fight on foreign soil. He's earned over a hundred thousand dollars by doing this. When he eventually retires it'll be with a healthy bank and his education basically paid for.

Dreamhack more prestigious than GSL? I don't think you know what prestigious means. Nobody is going to weigh a Dreamhack win, even Dreamhack Winter to any GSL. Liquid`HerO is a two time champion of the toughest Dreamhack tournament but no one uses that to say he's better than players who have won even a single GSL.
Also, there is money in GSL if you win. It's the highest payout for first place other than the WCS World Champion title.
