But perhaps they don't actually when I think about it, since everyone hate Naniwa and everyone love Stephano. I certainly want to see them go for the glory. Win all the foreign tournaments you want, but it's that 1 GSL title that will make a foreigner into an instant legend like Grrrr, where we still talk about them 10+ years after their accomplishment.

You don't get. It's GOM that has been disrespectful not Stephano. They GAVE hime a free spot. Implying he had not the skills to take it if he wanted to.
He felt rightfully insulted and left. So obvious :p
More seriously : 100.000$ on the line at IEM. That's a pretty easy choice...

Basically, the highest profile foreign player is trading a whole lot of respect to likely bomb out of IEM (full of top players) and collect ~ $1400. Really? If he played U&D and made it back to code S, I wouldnt give him anymore respect than I already do. If he wins IEM, Ill respect him that much more. By your logic, he's doing the most respectable thing possible here. Directly fighting for another championship title.
By my logic, he loses respect because working hard in Korea to qualify for and attempt to win the top SC2 tournament is more important than winning IEM.
My logic is my values. Your logic is your values. Don't mix them together.
Based on the other comments in this thread, do people not place as much value on competing in GSL anymore? Has the scene become that diluted?

It's all about the money obviously. Can't really say I blame him.

At least good news for MKP

Why the hell would ANYONE choose GSL over the potential of a LOT of money?

GSL is still the biggest and most prestigious tournament out there, it's just that for some players it isn't the top priority.
Some foreign fans feel the same, too because they value the tournaments higher where they can see them, but I don't feel like GSL has lost it's appeal to the general public. Only the scene has gotten more busy and more tournaments have sprung up so schedule conflicts happen more often (regardless if it was avoidable in this case or not).

Good thing they don't give seeds to foreigners anymore, it's a shame how people like Stephano don't appreciate them while thousands of people would kill to get a seed.

Not to throw shit at Stephano but doesn't he forfeit like ALOT of matches? iirc NASL etc..

Does Stephano make this decision or is it an EG decision? The former would be understandable if Stephano thinks he has a higher chance of making money (as well as not having to practice WoL for the up and downs) at IEM. I don't know about the latter though.

They give him the best possible bracket, and hes not playing before thursday at IEM....
He knew about IEM weeks upfront, and yet cant inform GSL before brackets are out...
Just dont give foreigners special treatment in GSL anymore, im fucking tured of the forfeits.
Yeah I agree its really disappointing but not a bad move for himself.
Tbh i would not be surprised if he had planned his flight on purpose ignoring the u&d because he simply didnt want to play the u&d for a couple of reasons :
--> Thats on WoL and he has fully switched... GSL making WoL qualifications for an HotS tournament, kinda silly. --> He doesnt want to play the GSL because it keeps you in korea week after week (what if he qualified ? the code S could overlap with MLG IPL Dreamhack etc.), these are prepared matches and hes not good at those. ---> He keeps a bitter memory of the days when he kept on flying around from tourneys to tourneys, getting tired and ending up winning nothing except the Lone Star Clash. He wants to be fully prepared for the IEM.
So retarded move or brilliant move ? will depend on his IEM performances.

Whats dramatic bout losing respect? It's not like he was my idol or some shit. He's obviously playing JUST for the money and therefore appears to me like a greedy unmotivated player. You can go highfive the other eg fangirls, you guys made a big deal out of it lol

Stephano always forfeits when he knows he is going to lose. He even forfeited from the first Iron Squid a French tournament because he knew he wouldn't be able to beat MMA.
|
Looking at this from his point of view, progamers have a limited time frame when they produce top results. He is just trying to make the most of the time he has. He hasn't been performing well in GSL anyway. I don't blame him. On the bright side, some hard working player will get an opportunity to move up and take his spot.

I will let you in on a secret:
They are all in it for the money. Even the Korean players. Even the players with more “passion” and seeking “glory” are doing it to get paid.

Really dissapointed in this decision of Stephano

Either way, Stephano is doing the right thing. But some simple-minded ppl wont understand that

The Korean B-teamers that have never made a dime but still put more hours in than they would have to work at a minimum wage job are in it for the money? Plenty of Koreans choose GSL over foreign tournaments even though the foreign tournaments would be easier money. Tons of great players still went to MLGs when they only had a 5k 1st place prize. Funnily enough Stephano is one of the players who dodged MLGs back then.
