The only reason why the Korean scene is relevant at all is because it was the place where money was at. And when there is money in entertainment you get competition.
You couldn't make much playing from the "west" in BW days so the place to be was Korea, obviously. But now things are different. There is a LOT of money to be made everywhere and western tournies are more abundant, pay more and are, for the moment, easier. No wonder a lot of Koreans are attending foreign tournies.
It is a business decision by Stephano and it makes perfect sense. There would be NO scene if it wasn't about the money. E-cred doesn't do shit to anyone.
|
Poor Stephano can't hang out with the cool kids, so he hangs out with his little brothers friends to be 'cool'.
|
Why is it a surprise to anyone that Stephano is only playing for the money? He's made that clear on innumerable occasions.
He doesn't like Starcraft 2, he's sticking around for the dollahs, he's gonna retire this year and go to school like a boss. This should not be news to anybody.
|
So that's how the show ends. Too bad, it was pretty entertaining to see so many fanboy tears. Atleast LR threads will now be alot more enjoyable overall without all the fanboys.
|
he made the better decision imo
|
Well this falls in line with his goals to make easy money from foreign tournaments, so I don`t think anyone is actually surprised. He was always about the money and isn`t afraid to admit it.
|
so frustrating for korean players, all the time the worse foreigner get free seeds without qualifying and then they surrender that possible spot for a good korean up and comer... foreigner should try to achieve something in gsl like jinro huk nani and idra did some time ago. and not play in boring foreign tournaments. but thats just my opinion wp foreigner

It's like saying everyone that has a job only does it for the money. Some might be progamers for the eventual chance of getting some big cash but honestly what are the chances? I'm sure most of them would make a bunch more if they would just finish school and get a regular job. They are progamers because they love the game and want to have their name remembered.

I dunno man, there is something about this site that just makes me laugh often. I think people are just really passionate about it, which is cool. But from my PoV I can't take it as seriously and whatnot, so it comes off really weird when I see comments like that. I just can't imagine people talking like that in real life. LIke, I've been to MLGs with my friend and I like to start conversations with random people to see if I meet anyone that "passionate" and get them talking about it the way that people type, it's pretty fun and all, but I haven't run into someone like that yet.

IMO, this is why GSL should stop giving seeds to foreigners. Its just that simple. If they want to play with the big boys, prove your interested long term and qualify through the qualifiers. Too bad GOM keeps giving away seeds to disinterested players who just back out. Make the foreigners earn it GOM.

the PL forfeit is really curious.
I feel stephano is code A level, and I expect he will be in the next season.

Even the players with more “passion” and seeking “glory” are doing it to get paid. The Korean B-teamers that have never made a dime but still put more hours in than they would have to work at a minimum wage job are in it for the money? Plenty of Koreans choose GSL over foreign tournaments even though the foreign tournaments would be easier money. Tons of great players still went to MLGs when they only had a 5k 1st place prize. Funnily enough Stephano is one of the players who dodged MLGs back then.
Wait, so Korean B teamers are making less than minimum wage in the HOPES of making more money later on is good? That system sucks and takes advantage of younger players hoping to rise through the ranks. As a community, we should not be endorsing players not getting paid as some sort of proof of “passion”. Its really the team being unwilling to pay the player a livable wage, which would be 100% illegal in a number of countries considering how young some of these players are.
And how little you remember from the $5000 days of MLG. Do you remember how MGL had a deal worked out with GSL to pay to have their players over to their events, covering flights? And Stephano didn’t dodge MLG, he was in Europe and a lot of European players did not and still don’t attend MLG because flights cost a lot.

Few people I know work for free. People go to jobs to make a living. Some people enjoy parts of their jobs, like I do. But I wouldn't show up if they didn't pay me. Progamers put in a lot of effort and work very hard. People who fool themselves saying that the players would do all of this without pay are just naive. If people couldn't make a living at it, there would be no BW or SC2 leagues, end of story.

Reading some posts I feel like some people think that when Gom invites you and you requalify you can t forfeit for another tournament... ?
Actually i think he has a really good reason to arrive in CeBit earlier : he wants to pratice during 3 days because his opponents will and the ß(nice IEM) will be down except on the IEMs computer.

If it is.. sucks for them.

Expected, there is no real money in GSL. Stephano just doing what he knows best, getting top positions in lesser tournaments and more $$$.

I am sure they all enjoy playing, though the stress might not be as much fun. But if given a choice between a qualifying match for a Korean tournament or a chance at winning the IEM World Championship, the answer should be a no-fucking-brainer. It is better for him as a whole, regardless of prize money.

So what all of you are saying is you're disappointed in Stephano for clearly having a plane ticket for a specific time to go to IEM before the Up & Downs were announced instead of GOMTV for having a terrible ability to schedule the Up & Down Matches so all of the players in them can participate... Cool.

I'm not going to go 100% with you. GSL brings like 6(?) tournaments a year. Weakening your position for playing in GSL code S for 6 tournaments (potentially) is actually a bad idea. I do understand his reasoning however. Go win IEM, then dominate Code A, Get back into Code S, still have 5 tournaments left. I cannot fault him for it, but I don't think his choice is a no brainer.
