Stephano knows his chances are slim to none in Korea so he's going for the ez bucks.
Can't really blame him when he is just trying to win as much as possible before cashing out.

I wish skipping out on gsl after getting seeding ended with a lifetime ban to stop shit like this from happening every time a foreigner gets an invite.

I just don't get these comments.
I can see it from his perspective. He's said before that his motivation for playing still is the money and the applause of the fans (which he's far more likely to get abroad at IEM). He's said that he doesn't enjoy WoL. Originally, he was only going to do this for a year. Clearly, he's just fine with being a big fish in a small pond. Unfortunate, but nothing wrong with that, it's his life.
Gameplay-wise, he's already shown he can hang with the best so I doubt he's very scared of the Koreans. Hell, I'd go as far to say he's the most reliable player on EG-TL in proleague aside from Taeja.

Makes no sense for foreigners to play in GSL. They are not good enough (especially not for code S) and generally get embarrassed, and there are many easier tournaments and opportunities to win money elsewhere. I've given up on foreigner play in korea tbh, the golden days of some even play are over, especially with Kespa in the scene now. We're going to be where BW was pretty soon imo
|
It was expected, I wasn't even Stephano would play in Code S if he got the spot again, I mean it's his last year (if he doesn't change his mind again) and of course he wants easy money.

The first prize in GSL is very high
Yes and no, only the first place has actually a way bigger prize compared to iem.
GSL :
1st : 45k$ 2nd :18k $ 3rd-4th: 4.5k$
IEM :
1st : 30k$ 2nd :15k $ 3rd-4th: 7.5k$
And GSL is like for two month, block you to attempt to foreigner tournament, while IEM is a ~ 5 day event so realisticly, way more interesting.

We don't know what'll happen as IM/Yonghwa usually aren't posting everything that goes through their mind on twitter like Stephano does. Personally, I expect him to forfeit one of the events but that'd probably announced through GOM and not on Yonghwa's twitter or something.
AND GUYS, there's no need to blame anyone anymore I solved everything about who we should blame, IT'S OK!

IEM will have more viewers, more exposure to a larger market and better coverage. It’s a no brainer from a business standpoint, which is what drives all these events and teams. From any standpoint beyond wallet stuffing, it was a terrible thing to do. Now his team gets a free loss, his U/D group has less integrity, and he's shit on the Code S seed that was granted to him. Guess what happens next time an international player or team wants to play in the GSL or PL? The managers are going to remember Stephano. He's hurting more people than himself here. Only on TL could a simple scheduling conflict be taken to this level of drama. There is a section of this community that treats a play forfeiting a GSL match the same way middle school girls each other when they cancel a shopping session. Great to hear that after having all of your reasons refuted you've fallen back on simple smearing.
It is a pretty stupid issue. Do you really think GOM is so irrational to bar Stephano from playing or hate all other non-korean players cause of this? That he had another event and he didn’t cancel when they gave him less than 5 days notice of his match. Do you really think that this tiny little thing is going to create a massive rift between GOM and the western teams? Is that what is going to happen because of this? Because it has happened before and there were no issues.
The community loves drama. And when there is no drama, they will make their own, regardless of logic, history or rational thinking.

I don't know why most people are blaming Stephano on this one. He was already scheduled to play in IEM and it looks like he would prefer to play at IEM instead of U&D. GOM was the one that just released their schedule a week before the matches start.
Does anyone know if Stephano is staying in Code A?

They should really add some punishment at GSL, there are way to many times foreigners got an spot which many koreans fight for ,and then just drops out due to different reasons.
Add some punishment so that they just dont accept a spot without thinking it through

It was only announced within five days of the match, but the coaches know about them beforehand. But let's ignore "logic, history or rational thinking" to defend the player that has several times in the past forfeited because he felt like it.

itd be sad for Rain wouldnt it be? i mean he just fought Flash for a spot in code S, do we cancel everything hes done and ban him? Oh wait, from what you said...the ban is only if they are foreigners right? think, think hard, then talk.

How is this "less than five days notice" as many people are saying? Even if the exact schedules weren't released until yesterday, people have known when the Up/Down matches will be for a while (they're always at the same time, right after Code A...) and GOM gave him the most advantageous spot, the first group, three whole days before his IEM groups begin. So Stephano and EG have known, or should have known, about this for a while, and they probably could have booked an later flight and done both if they wanted to.

Wow, what a surprise.

ill bet he doesnt care about your respect if you dont want him to be ready and play in a big tournament for a lot of money

Aww. And GOM made the perfect 5-man / 3-protoss / 0-zergs group just for him. But since I'll get to see more of his games at IEM then I would at GSL I'm fine with it.

This is a new low for players forfeiting GSL spots.
Basically, the highest profile foreign player is trading a whole lot of respect to likely bomb out of IEM (full of top players) and collect ~ $1400. Really?

First off, there is no reason to believe that anyone knew the dates of the U&D matches any time before this. Also, its pretty clear you don’t like Stephano, which is fine. But don’t act like he did something morally incorrect by forfeiting a qualifying match to play an a World Championship he qualified for a long time ago and was announced months ago. He is a member of a team and played for him to go to that event and that event will provide more exposure for their sponsors. Money or not, the U&D matches are just less important than IEM.
