..Which makes it an expansion :p
A standalone does not need the previous game in order to be playable, hots does need wol to be playable thus it is not a standalone, regardless of seperated ladder and campaign.

Which is a great incentive for new players to pick up both at the same time. Blizz has done this with all of their old RTS titles. When the expansion comes out the Battle Chest is always the best value but it's not worth buying if you already have the older title.

Much earlier than I thought when they said first half of 2013.

If I have to choose between this release date with a half balanced multi and a summer release with HOTS ending up as good of an expansion as BW, then I'd rather wait until the summer. I hated to first year of WoL with the weekly random patches.

FTFY.
Most expansion packs I've played not made by Blizzard feel like minor additions to an already existing game wheras Blizzard expansions feel like entirely new games, almost mini-sequels.
HOTS will be no different. The UI will be different the gameplay very different and the playerbase separated from WoL.

that's definitely a logical way of going about it. No matter how they slice it, HOTS multiplayer balance is going to be a mess for a while until the metagame settles down.
I'm buying it immediately for the campaign but I know a lot of people don't care much about the campaign. /shrug

55€ seriously? I only have made 37€ on my balance. Looks like I have to grind more D3 Items to get the Deluxe Edition :x

Well i was more aiming towards the whole "needing the previous game" part of it being an expansion. That's kind of crucial for most people who are intending to buy it. I know a standalone as what you are describing as a blizzard expansion, same formula as its predecessor but basically completely remade. Difference is that standalones don't need you to buy the previous game first, whilst that is the case for blizzard expansions.

You somehow missed the entire overhaul of every single piece of the interface in the game except for the options menu? o_o

Fun fact: Stephano and I both have a March 12th birthday. HotS confirmed for best expansion of all time.

Probably also the new UI additions to Battle.net, although most, if not all, of those changes will be applied to WoL as well.
It's kinda interesting to see Blizzard not going down the path of stand-alone expansions like what other big-name RTS makers have done. iirc, quite a few of Relic's RTS games have had stand-alone expansions, like Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. C&C3 and RA3 each had their own stand-alone expansions. Total War has had a few stand-alone expansions.
What Blizzard is doing is more traditional, which I'm fine with.

Eh, pretty sure it's a WoL expansion because you need to have WoL in order to play Hots.
