Hey, not sure if its the correct thread to ask this but id figure it would do no harm if i post it here, Basically i am trying to find a "casual" game for this summer to occupy my off time with while im working on something productive, last summer i found myself simply playing sc2 way to much and improving little... kinda getting sucked up and playing 2-5 hours per day for about 1 and a half months, kinda annoying and pointless if you are not in the "mind set" to improve and you are in the worst period balance wise that your race has ever faced . Point is, i will try not to touch the ladder this summer. But i saw the Hots beta at MLG Anahime and it seemed like a really fun thing to do this summer, and since its constantly changing and ladder will likely reset its likely i won't get frustrated/overplay it. Sadly, i am not sure if i will be able to get a beta key for it... so i would like a "veteran" that has played the previous blizzard rts betas to tell me if they actually have any program to give beta keys to highly ranked players on ladder ? Or will it simply be randoms + pros. I Know this is kinda of a stupid question but i really want to decide if i will actually put 60-100$ into some games to play this summer or if i have high chances at the beta.
Might just save myself a few bucks...

I'm new to TeamLiquid, but all the big time casters (Day9, psy, Destiny, etc) have all refered to this site as the "heart of the starcraft community" so I figured I'd join the community and get to know the people. So far most of what I know about the SC2 community is what is published on YouTube.
Anyway, I'm a big fan of the Zerg (though they are a pain in the ass to get good with). On that note, I've got a few questions.
I've been having troubles knowing what to look for when scouting. I don't play terran and toss that much, and when I float my overlord in an opponents base at 6 minutes, I really don't know what I'm looking at and need to prepare for. I'm sure this topic has been discussed before, so can anyone point me in the general direction?
I havn't played SC2 in about 6 months, has anything major changed since last year?
anyway, good to be back to SC2, and I hope I can make a few contacts to game with here.
Cheers! biggest change: ZvT:+ Show Spoiler + there are several different unit composition, muta has kind of died out. mass upgraded Ling infestor Roach ling infestor Lings baneling infestor
Late game: ling infestors corruptor and broodlords Or Mass upgrade ling infestors into quick ultras
The reason for this is that it is safer to go 15 hatch now and terran also plays greedier to get upgrade marines, so muta cannot do as much damage anymore. The new zerg deathball requires lings with upgrades and infestors, therefore infestors style give a very nice transition into quick hive play. 13 mins for fast hive into quick ultras.
Terran tends to use factory for hellions to control creep spread and delay third but this is now kind of easy to deal with since queen has the buff. the transition from terran could be: quick double CC, mass hellions marauders all in, blueflame hellions and stim marines, banshee into mech play.
Tanks are also less common now, marauder marine medivac are more popular
ZvP:+ Show Spoiler + A few months ago, muta seems to be quite popular and OP until toss becomes better at defending it. Now in general, dealing with FFE toss, you usually go for the stephano style max roaches (quick 3rd, 6:20 gas, roach warren etc) because it gives good defense against any gateway all in and also let you kill toss if he has small army and took a super fast 3rd. almost all toss goes for FFE nowadays. Gateway openings are really rare and hasn't changed since 6 months ago. late game properly composition: roach spines broodlords and infestors.
position your army well, the only way toss can beat this is either you spread the broodlords too thin and got sniped or mothership landed a vortex. try to get burrow and neural parasite if you ever see a mothership, you really cannot allow him to do an archon toilet.
As for scouting: Terran- no gas = either all in (quite unlikely nowadays because of the larger map size) or 1 rax FE or just 15 CC like a boss 1 gas = quick hellions mostly 2 gas = very rare, most likely banshee
Protoss- FFE mostly, the number of gas he takes varies different kind of strategies. Like 4 gas means tech heavy push like 3immortal sentries gateway warp prism push etc. 2 gas mostly mean 6/7/8 gate all in Gateway opening could mean a very possible 4 gating or if he took 2 gas, DT or stargate. Go gas steal if he is opening gateway.

Great MLG tourney so far. Can't wait for the final day to start. There's going to be alot of games to look over when the replays are released, especially in the open bracket and the earlier games of the US nationals. I should really go wash those dishes in the sink right now but...oh there's another game I haven't watched yet.

Trying to keep up with the NA scene, some names just kind of came out of nowhere to me, and I thought I was relatively up to date with the players lol. Was wondering if anyone could say more on who they are o.o
In GM... #13 NMxSouL - well, clearly on NMx, but who the heck is SouL? Must be new account since it only has 144 wins #15 LgNHorNyBnT - similar, obviously on Lgn, but who is hornybnt? Does he have a better known aka? #29 NpPpSomeNoob - who? used to be pretty low ranked, suddenly high gm with sick win-loss #39 NMxMoMo - NMx appears to have more than 1 protoss I don't recall hearing about xD seems to be consistently good though in past season as well

I saw a video posted here a few months ago from youtube that like, showed the comparison of the quality of writing between BW's campaign and SC2's. Shit was amazing, but I can't for the life of me find it through this search or youtubes or googles....does anyone happen to have that? ;_;

Also how come in SC2 are multiple people allowed the same name? BW was 1 name per person. IE) If i made the name Green someone else couldn't take it.. they should bring it back get's rid of all the bm smurfs. I don't know about that... See YellOw Vs. YellOw, both BW progamers
Oh god and they both play zerg..... that makes it even worse!

Everybody seems to be really manner on the ladder today. Especially the zergs. A few GG WPs, and even one guy who complimented my holding of his 8 pool and then using blink+obs+high ground warpin to bypass his spine wall.

Im just getting into watching SC2 as an esport and love it! Im just sometimes having problems on whats going on? and advice? what youtube vids to watch or what not or should I just keep watching games? Also cant play until I get a new comp.

Hey guys im new to SC2 having played about 40 games on ladder 1v1 and about 60 2v2, through this time Ive tried terran, protoss and settled on zerg. Something I've noticed is that no matter how much of the map I control in terms of bases (3 at saturation) I can't work out for the life of me how to take down a 1 or 2 base tank defence Terran.
If I try going in the sneaky way through the back they tend to have missile turrets up and when I come knocking at the front door with gateway units or roach/lings Im obliterated. Repeat this process a few times and then they push out and win usually.
Where should I look to defeat this?
Oh and Im bronze 1v1, silver 2v2 so yes, I am bad at games.

Are phones allowed in the player booths? Or what is or is not permitted in player booths?
What if someone has a device that vibrates if there is an imminent all-in and some device is used to signal the player of this all-in?
It just seems that if money is on the line, people may employ less than honest methods to win. There's been a lot of map hacking awareness recently, and I think it's a symptom of Blizzard not taking more swift action against these players. Just out of curiousity, why isn't Blizzard taking more swift action? Are they afraid of some legal basis since these map hacking claims can be at most tenuous, even if many good players can pretty conclusively decide someone is hacking?

I played ladder today for the first time since before the patch last season whereupon I held the rank 1 master spot. All of my matches today were against Zergs and I have to say that queen range buff was a lot stronger than I thought it would be. I guess 2 rax is easily defended now. Like really easily defended.
I'm starting to wonder what race distribution we will have in Hots.

Ugh, this is annoying.
I have this "problem" where I literally cannot play Starcraft within the first like 3-4 hours after waking up. I've had a shower, worked out, eat foot, went shopping, drank an energy drink, but no matter what I just can't focus. I feel slow, and when I try to play the game I start to feel light headed.
Weird.
Also, they need to remove the random crutch. As Protoss getting paired against a random who plays zerg on a 4 player map is basically auto loss. I have to go 1 gate sentry expand and the zerg just gets three bases like normal, yet my economy is so delayed. I think from now all I'll just go like double proxy stargate or proxy DT. I hate cheesing but it's literally pointless to play a straight up game with them.
|
"Random Crutch?" Do you mean the race showing as Random in loading screen? He picked random, that's his race, it doesn't tell him what he gets until he sees it, it's not really an advantage, you just need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best honestly. I play Zerg, so seeing Random and showing Zerg usually gives the Random player a chance of being Zerg and six pooling me knowing I have little to no defense. I just prepare for it by obscuring my build enough to drop a spine crawler early, then proceeding normally. It shouldn't be a problem with adequate scouting. If you're really unsure, send two scouts, sacrifices a bit of econ, but it's a great help. My recommendation would be send second scout after first scout reaches first starting position you scout, then send it to the other one so the last two get scouted same time.

Yes it is. He knows what I'm playing and can work his build accordingly. I don't what what he is playing, have to use a sub-optimal build so I don't auto lose if he's not zerg, and have to sacrifice economy early game. A random players has none of this.
As a Protoss player, where you put your first pylon is hugely important. There's no way to scout before you lay that down, unless you scout incredibly early and therefore put yourself really far behind.
One of the nice things about playing Terran was not having to worry about random because marines and CC's are good vs everything. (Except banelings, fuck banelings).

When random, find a generic "all race" build and run with it. Random isn't a crutch dude. He has to work a strategy from the second the game starts, he's already at a disadvantage as he doesn't have a set plan when he sees Protoss like you could when you see Random. Build a Forge and a Cannon instead of the second Gateway, delay the gateway units a minute or so to make a cannon. That or my scouting technique which I do as Zerg, and it doesn't sacrifice much economy.

People posting like this must be in bronze league.
You think people actually decide their build and make important decisions during the loading screen?
No, if you know what you're doing (and if you're in diamond you probably do), you know exactly what build you're doing as soon as you see what the matchup is. I play all three races during the same season (just not random), so I know how this works. There is a 2-3 minute window where my opponent cant decide their build and plan accordingly that I cannot.
Developing a "catch-all" build for each matchup is impossible, since going 1 gate expo vs protoss gets your killed, going FFE against Terran/Protoss gets you killed, and going for 3 gate expo puts you incredibly behind vs Z/T. The only thing you can really do is fucking 4gate or go DT's. You can't even just go stargate because Terran automatically beats you and Stargate vs Protoss is really coin flippy.
The issue is, is that doing a fast expanding (FFE or Nexus first) will basically get you killed in anything but vZ, but if you go gateway expand vZ you're fucking dead unless you're just way better than your opponent. The only thing you can do is hope he is dumb and all ins your. Or just cheese.
