The 18 year old Canadian only started playing a year ago and first started to make a name for herself this Autumn, winning two Iron Lady Champion Cups. This brings her to Korea, where she wants to challenge and bring her skills up to the next level. To tell you the truth, it might not seem like the best team decision for some where teams are on the biggest and brightest stage, but what does that mean if she doesn't win it all?
For Eclypsia to see her talent and make an investment can turn this into a big deal or a bust, but that's what you do with bright prospects, no?
For Scarlett she gets what she wants.. to challenge herself and push herself to a higher limit than she already is.

I'll be honest, I thought it would be Eclypsia. She said in an interview the team was starting a "New Korean division" (AFAIR) and this was the only team that really fit.

Do you have details about what Eclypsia is giving her? From the sounds of it she was in talks with several teams and Eclypsia is the one she chose so I would think she likes the deal she's getting. At this point she is very much a prospect, a single good tournament performance (amazing actually) doesn't necessarily mean a good future player.

Gratz she got a team, I was just hoping for a little bit of a better team, but who knows, this could work out very well, can't wait to see if she can continue to preform in future tournaments.

Yeah, there are so many amateur NA players who routinely defeat Terious and Ddoro, then go on to lose 2-1 to Oz in fairly close games, and win against DeMuslim 2-0. Totally not worth picking up such an unpromising lack of talent. /sarcasm

I think it was more her games against Oz that showed she has a lot of potential. Plus she's getting to that plateau you reach if all you're doing is grinding ladder, so will be interesting to see if she can push on from there.

afaik demuslim basically gave away a free win ("regame") due to scarlett making an evo chamber instead of a spawning pool.
Not taking sides here but what you said isn't really a counter argument to whether or not Scarlett is better than Demuslim since she was able to take 2 games off him after that.

Can't tell if this is sarcasm, but there are many teams stronger than EG, such as mousesports, Empire, TL at the moment, and that's just foreign teams...
What an amazing accomplishment for someone who just a month ago would be considered an "unknown". I'm glad that her hard work payed off, and I hope that more players will be given the chance to break into the scene as she has done.

I was referring to the publicity effect, which weights easily as much as performance in the marketing industry that esport is heading too. She has quite a unique background and is a hottopic right know, while Eclypsia's decisions so far have not made them one of the big names in the game. If scarlett had joined quantic or eg, the team and the player would have gained in publicity, as an EG in front of your name is more worth atm than an EC. However, she now has officialy raised the marketworth of the EC tag.

Scarlett's problem is that while she's had success, it's been very limited. There's a number of players who've done well in a single or a string of tournaments and who are never heard from again. So I can understand why better teams may be leery of signing such a relative new comer. If she continues to have the same level of success over the next year or two, I think we will certainly see higher skill team pick her up.
As for now, she gets to practice round the clock, show off her skills, and Eclypsia gets some publicity. Sounds like a win-win to me.
Awesome to see up and coming players make a big splash and get picked up by a professional team, we need more young players constantly seeking to play at a high level.

I don't think Scarlett can reach full potential with the eclysia guys as training partners not that it's a bad team in any way, but Scarletts IPL play was at least one league above them.

Welmu was on team Empire not long ago. He beat Kas and TitaN at Assembly two month ago, and just manage to take the second place at Copenhagen (beaten by Kas in finals) during the same week-end than IPL4. A very decent player imo.
Good pickup. Kind of happy she wasn't snagged by one of the super elite teams. More smaller teams with skill more dispersed makes for a better esports environment.
The female scene of SC2 is starting to gather steam, will be a little while I think before we see our first major tournament win by a lady, but those days are very much finite before it arrives. Excellent news to see the community continue to grow and evolve over time.

Good luck to her. Eclypsia have an interesting roster to say the least. Artist and Welmu are really good players that don't get talked about much and Scarlett seems to be pretty good too.

Smaller teams with less exposure had a lot more to gain by recruiting Scarlett than big teams that already have star players. That's probably why Eclypsia gave her a better offer than any big team.

I agree with the cliff comment. I can get behind a few jokes about her, but things like what was said there are completely unneeded. Plus I like the way Eclypsia is developing.

Ummmmmmm... Haypro is on one of the biggest international Starcraft 2 teams. You may have heard of it. Scarlett was on no team.
And did you forget that people actually did hype Haypro for the next event he went to after that run. He just didn't get out of groups and the hype stopped.

You're right though, Eclypsia had more to gain from this pick up than the bigger teams, and picking up the player with the fanclub that has been at the top of the forums constantly for the last 9 days is great for them.

His playing really well this year, beating HuK standing toe-to-toe to Avenge and showing good games against Code S players like sC, theSTC, Maru and JYP in the up & downs. Making Oz sweat hard on a really close third game? Dominating DeMuslim seemingly easily?
I don't think she's a one-trick pony by an stretch of the imagination. I'd says she'll be a name for a while if she decides to stick around. She's different from HayprO because everyone knows HayprO can beat these high level players, the problem is just making HayprO get into that 'mood'

Sure, they're far from being the biggest European team, but Scarlett, no matter how good she is, has just started on her path to becoming a top player, and the biggest teams would not be able to offer her that much, as they'd be investing their resources into their stars, while up and coming teams such as Eclypsia would be more able to match her needs, at least until she reaches certain heights.
It is also a bit insulting to players such as Welmu, SarenS and Artist, to say that she deserves a better team, because they all have much better results so far (even though SarenS hasn't produced anything as of late).
I have my own reservations on the viability of Eclypsia, because very few organisations expand and invest at that rate, and remain afloat - but that is merely speculation.
With that said, big, big good luck to Scarlett; I think she must have an amazing character to stand up to all the crap that I've seen people talk about her.
Really odd choice to pick this team, I feel like the "girl" train most pro teams have been getting for celeb'esc/mascot appearance (excuse the term but that has been the case sorry) would really have picked up steam to aquired this girl but a simple semi-pro team is kinda low. I mean this girl would walk circles around the few other announced ones, topping oz and bumblebee? Not to bad. In my opinion, she is the first girl yet to be announced for a team that actually deserves to play on a pro team.
Btw, I'm glad the community is taking the gender situation with the kind of maturity they it deserves, and I'm sorry if I offend people by using mascot to represent the last few girls aquired by pro teams, it's not like we aren't all thinking it, and this is the first one that really deserves what she got.

Good point there. She'll most likely play in most clan wars ect and not not risk being a filler that can easily happend when you are around #7 in the team. Kinda like cycling where it's sometimes better to be a star in a small team than fetching water on the grand tours.
I had the pleasure of watching her play in the Playhem Sponsor Me! Tourney...she was roflstomping EVERYONE. Fantastic all-around play I wish her and Eclypsia nothing but the best. If she can develop a good training schedule and perhaps train with some korean players, she can be something special.
Grats for her getting on a team, but I was hoping she'd be getting on a more high profile team. Hopefully Eclypsia can support her going to more tournaments ^^

I think if she does well in the next foreign tournament (ie top 16) Mr Chae is gonna give her next season's Code S spot! Good publicity imo!
On the topic at hand, I feel that she would benefit more in terms of skill if she joined a korean team or a more established foreign team as she would have better practice partners. I'm guessing that she joined Eclypsia because it was the best deal (ie training in Korea, good salary, get to fly to tournaments) offered to her.

People have the tendency of condemning actions that are unusual in their eyes, simply because they're not used to them. Doesn't really matter if laptops and desktops offer the same gaming capacity or not, because when people are given the choice of using a new product or a familiar product, they tend to favor what they're comfortable with, despite any evidence that shows equality between the two.

I assume when people here she plays on a laptop they are thinking she is using the little finger pad thing to do the clicking. For all we know she could have the laptop connected to a larger monitor with a mouse connected to it.

Having played on my friend's Macbook (which is apparently what Scarlett uses), it's laggy and choppy. It's not so much that it's a laptop specifically, but that most laptops don't have the performance specs to run the game without things getting a little jittery.

Playing on a PC is a much more enjoyable experience. Laptops overheat much more, in large engagements the FPS drops considerably, and like you said the screen is smaller which makes microing harder as well as being able to spot things like drops in the mini map.
BOOM! Congrats Scarlett. My top of the line MacBook Pro runs just fine as long as I set all the graphics down to like 8-bit 256x256, basically it looks like tetris on a microwave oven.

And there are players worse than Scarlett who are only on teams much higher profile than Eclypsia solely because they're entertaining and thus marketable. ESPORTS is a business, not a meritocracy.
She's also quite talented, certainly good enough to be on a pro team. The fact that she's a girl certainly helped the amount of attention she got, but trust me, she would've gotten picked up whether she was a dude or a lady.

Im pretty sure you are wrong she not only played this big tourney to qualify she was making some nice and sick plays at IPL wich were bertter than nearly all foreighners showed.
I guess she is one of the Top 4 Non-Koreans ATM wich could be wrong (maybe im just hyped) but only HUK Stephano Naniwa are on eye level as well.
I think on the IPL-4 17 out of the Top 18 were Korean ^^
Not that she is there already but she came out of nowhere and i believe with proper training...
And she is not the "Girly-Gamer" you would expect. Make some research and you will find out that the gender wont be such a advertising factor

There's a fairly significant advantage to coming in as a complete unknown and your opponent having absolutely no idea what your tendencies are, and I think that if she kept playing the way she does at tournaments she'd get in some trouble. She's very stylistic, and from what I've seen of her ZvP and ZvT (I casted all of the replays she's made available), it's fairly exploitable.

To be fair, she seems to basically just be a complete raw talent, her play's fairly unorthodox and a little rough around the edges against super-tight players like Oz. I think that with a team to talk to and work out strategies with, she'll quickly outclass most of the people that are currently on her skill level.

If it was a team like Liquid or EG, I could see where you are coming from. But Eclypsia is a new team without many great players, and I think Scarlett is as good as most of the other players on the team.
These kinds of success stories are immensely inspiring to me, not just in gaming but in all aspects of life. To lean of a relative unknown player to rise to these levels and defeat professionals, its really a cool story. Congratulations to Scarlett and her new team.
I'm with makro on the lol, wtf she is great I was expecting a better team to pick her up or at least one I know a little about. for example EG has many players that have not had great performance in tournaments for like forever.

Some things: Scarlett and Eclypsia aim to go to Korea after NASL to compete in the GSTL. The team plans to have its own house (as opposed to the Gom foreigner house).

There are alot of pros who are worse than Scarlett who are on even higher profile teams than Eclypsia. She is significantly better than any other girl out there. If a male player had the run she had at IPL4 and he was teamless i would guarantee they would be picked up by a mid level pro team WHICH is exactly what happened to Scarlett. Hell you could argue that Scarlett is better then several of her teamates. No doubt you just read that a girl joined a pro team and didn't even know they player in question. Also can you list these male players who are more deserving then scarlett to be on a pro team?

I agree with what you're saying, but saying "she's significantly better than any other girl out there" is a gross understatement, in my opinion. She's on par with the top North American players right now, and with some tweaks to her playstyle, will easily outclass them.

I guess that by "top girls" I meant "girls who are in the spotlight." I'm sure there's more good girl players that neither of us know are female, but they haven't put themselves out there.
I highly doubt that she was recruited for her sex/gender because whatever the sensibility on TL might be, for many she is not a female (how people think is independent of what you consider right or wrong). And I'm not too sure if recruiting a publicized MtF transgender is a selling point. It is almost sure she has been recruited for taking down a decent Korean and a recognized EU pro.

Playing on a PC is a much more enjoyable experience. Laptops overheat much more, in large engagements the FPS drops considerably, and like you said the screen is smaller which makes microing harder as well as being able to spot things like drops in the mini map.

Having played on my friend's Macbook (which is apparently what Scarlett uses), it's laggy and choppy. It's not so much that it's a laptop specifically, but that most laptops don't have the performance specs to run the game without things getting a little jittery.
Macbooks can play this game fine on lowest settings. It's like using a new keyboard or a new mouse, it just takes a little getting used to. Playing on a laptop doesn't make someone "better."

As one of Scarlett's biggest fans, I'd say she isnt exactly Code S yet either. I think the hype is more around the potential she has rather than her currently being one of the best players in the world or anything like that. Right now I think Desrow would probably be a fine practice partner.
Admittedly I havent seen any play out of him in forever but I refuse to live in a world where he's bad after like 6 months in Korea.

Scarlett is still the only MtF transgender that's anywhere near good, there are many (maybe 5-6?) quite good other female players even in like the NA GM league. (and Scarlett is only slightly better than all of them, in the grand scheme of things) Unless Fayth means that Scarlett passed some arbitrary skill level that a female player isn't supposed to breach, and therefore her femaleness is in question.

It's not exactly easy for someone to look like the gender they want to, or going through a transformation for that matter. Who cares what she looks or sounds like. And having male genitalia or not isn't anyone's business but her own, imo.

but as you might already understand, most things in wich mens are better depends at least slightly on speed, fast thinking etc wich basically gives them an advantage over womens in nearly every cognitive sports like chess with a clock or real time strategy games.

There's actually a science documentary from Norway "brainwash" with an episode on gender differences. Apparently differences between the genders are observable hours after birth. Males are more mechanically inclined, which seems to apply well to Starcraft.

I don't know about anyone else, but my support or interest in Scarlett's sc2 career, or anybody's sc2 career for that matter, is based on how the play the game, not their gender or sexual identity.
Congratulations to Scarlett. It is nice to see that a player that are able to produce good results gets picked up fast, And in my opinion it was smart to go for a team that isn't considered as one of the top teams. As she has already stated she had other options, which probably was better, but the atmosphere in Eclypsia was what suited her the best.
Now, I don't know what the other teams where, but I think a lot of us would have gone for the biggest team that approach us purely to be recognized as EG.Nighty, or Quantic.Nighty, but I really respect Scarlett for going the path she felt was right, and hopefully the environment in Eclypsia will allow her to grow as a player and train in Korea as that was one of the things she wanted to do.

It's totally irrelevant.. there's just A LOT less female playing. In my personal opinion, the reason there's less female playing full time is because the lifestyle is not attractive to them.

To be fair, she beat DeMusliM as well. He's a pretty good Terran himself. One tournament is not enough to completely judge her but given how well she played I think it's fair to she's not too far away from some of the top NA/EU progamers

Yeah but is it really surprising? Its a complicated and unprecedented issue in the SC2 community. And I think most people dont mean to specifically single out Scarlett. They are talking about transgenered issues in general. So I dont judge the so called "trolls" to harshly.

To be a bit more specific, more and more psychological and cognitive differences between men and women (eye-hand coordination, ability in scientific VS literary domains, level of empathy and ability to relate to one's condition) can be explained by the differences in perceived power between individuals. Since women have overall a lower perceived power than men, this differences appear in men VS women experiments, but sex does not seem to be the main driver of the effect.

It is entirely correct to say that your cognitive abilities = your brain, and that most of you neural connections are most rapidly developed in your first years of life. It is then also relatively correct to say that much of this has to do with your DNA. However it becomes much less relatively correct to cite that the difference in male/female brains solely leads to cultural professional trends (few girls play starcraft professionally, referring to snoodles' comment).The genetic variation between female and male brains exist, of course, but there are also tons of genetic variation between any two peoples' brains, whether same or different gender. Other factors (environment, etc.) play an important part on your brain too, creating even more variation, because our brains adjust to our perceived learning, too. And so to get somewhat more on topic; in the end, Scarlett's commitment to hard-work/ practice / learning will be what earns her more respect (or less).

In my world of mixed martial arts, a transgender would not get away with entering (and automatically winning) a WMMA contest. They would perform a simple epitestosterone level check, and the transgender would fail that test. I would imagine Scarlett failing a epitestosterone test as well.

We have never had an issue with transgendered girls competing, Scarlett isn't the first nor wasn't the last transgendered girl to compete in Iron Lady. I can count them on more than one hand. She is just the first you hear about because she is really skilled.
It is not particularly unfair to the other women for several reasons. The main reason is there is no actual physical advantage to being a male in starcraft. Iron Lady is not about having female genitalia, but actually about bringing together and highlighting a pretty small part of the community (although now its growing significantly thanks to groups like GoSC,etc). If a person identifies as female, we see them as female. Of course for transgendered individuals we do a bit more background checking to make sure it isn't a troll, but to this day not a single transgendered has been a troll. This is mainly due to the fact that what guy is gonna go through so much trouble to pretend to be a girl (having pictures and all) just for a chance to win $100. I say chance because there is not even a guarantee a guy can take the tournament as a majority of the female players are masters and some even grandmasters.
Another reason transgendered are allowed is because its not actually good to disallow them. You have to realize that not every transgendered has even come out as being transgendered. Some girls you think are completely girls are actually trans, but they keep it a secret (mainly because of some of the responses you see in this thread). This in-turn would stir up too much controversy and witch hunts if there was ever a suspicion that a girl was not born a girl in our tournament. As a tournament organization we are not gonna get into the business of checking birth certificates and genitalia. If you have sufficient evidence that you are female, or at least identify as female, you are qualified to play in the Iron Lady cups.

In MMA there's a physical difference between men and women. Men are stronger and have more muscle mass... In SC, this does not matter, so she won it fair and square if you ask me.

Apparently she really clicked with the Eclypsia staff. And EG or Liquid would have been silly to go after her. They've got a GSL roster, they have no reason to invest in a newer player. If she performs well in the long run they'll probably start looking at her.

Scoots actually touched on this during a LO3.
Just because a player has a single solid tournament performance is no reason for a top team to rush to sign this person. There's been many one-off players since SC2 has come out that have had a good tournament run, only to fade away incredibly quickly.
If they continue to be solid, then you might start to see top teams going after said player.
I take back what I said about TL being a mature place, for some reason I had the assumption this thread wouldn't need a warning by the moderators to keep the topic on scarlett's skill. I guess that was naive of me.

As for Eclypsia, it's a good pick up for them. Their most famous members at least stateside are DesRow who's more famous for drama than accomplishments, and Welmu/Artist who are damned good players but haven't really done much recently, so this is a really good thing for the team in terms of both publicity and skill.

Notority is far more important than results at this stage in Esports. We are still trying to get our name out there, so players that attract more fans will given spots over perhaps better players. If skill and talent were prioritized, then every team in the world would be comprised of Koreans.

We actually have got a discussion on balance that hasn't dissolved into complete chaos. We've also had one or two religious topics. It will have to be closely moderated obviously. The main problem with doing it here is that this isn't even an appropriate place to discuss it.
Have to be honest...Eclypsia isn't looking like such a good choice. I thought the trolls on TL were bad, but everything regarding Scarlett on Eclypsia's website is basically pure insults (plus a ton of crap about Desrow's weight as well).
After the April Fools fiasco, and complete apathy to disrespect to their own players on their own website...I'm expected Eclypsia to go belly-up any time.

General or SC2 General discussion. That said, all attempts to do so have failed as posters and OPs have failed to formulate a genuinely intelligent debate. What? Guess what genius, if you're playing a thirty minute game where you've maxed and you repeatedly expand; it's a macro game. Doesn't matter what 'tier' your units are. Obviously. Couldn't have been the games against Terious and Oz, or qualifying through Playhem, or beating Demuslim 2-0 (presumably 2-1 if not for the regame). Like someone said - the post makes no sense.

Is anyone else just a little disappointed she joined eclypsia? I was not amused by their publicity stunts. I would have been happier to see her on quantic, although she obviously had better reasons for deciding other than "I like this one."

Ehh I agree that what Twelve12 was wrong but thats not a very apt comparison. Scarlett wouldnt have 100% managed to take it 2-1 in the next two games but the chance is there. Probably even more likely than the 2-0 was with the re-game since she would have had map choice game two and Demu would have it in game 3. Whereas in the 2-0 with regame that actually happened, it was pre-set map and Demu choice in g2. I guess it all depends on how rattled Scarlett would get being down a game at the hands of a silly mistake like that.
But I dont think the odds of Bruce Wayne being batman if his parents weren't killed are very low. : )

Ehh I agree that what Twelve12 was wrong but thats not a very apt comparison. Scarlett wouldnt have 100% managed to take it 2-1 in the next two games but the chance is there. Probably even more likely than the 2-0 was with the re-game since she would have had map choice game two and Demu would have it in game 3. Whereas in the 2-0 with regame that actually happened, it was pre-set map and Demu choice in g2. I guess it all depends on how rattled Scarlett would get being down a game at the hands of a silly mistake like that.
But I dont think the odds of Bruce Wayne being batman if his parents weren't killed are very low. : )
