After reading EGAlex's thread on the subject I am interested in the community response to a slightly different system, please vote in this poll if you did in the last one. Poll: Would you pay if it was 10$ and 5$ for MLG Gold Members? No (1520) 74% Yes (539) 26% 2059 total votes Your vote: Would you pay if it was 10$ and 5$ for MLG Gold Members? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No
And this is why esports will not be on mainstream media any time soon.
Just because people aren't willing to pay for an Online PPV system doesn't mean that they aren't willing to pay.
For example i would watch if it was free for LQ but due to bandwidth restrictions i can't watch 20 hours of HQ video. I would gladly pay 20 bucks a month for an eSports TV channel that showed things like MLG and GSL either live or tape delayed.
There are also a large number of very annoyed gold membership holders who believed that they were getting HD for all MLG events

You don't pay for cable? Cool shit bro! Drawing a comparison the super bowl is the silliest thing I've ever herd. When MLG can sell 30 sec ads for millions of dollars then yea you can make that comparison.... Super Bowl is on network TV, anyone can watch it. I wonder how many people would be willing to pay to watch football, or baseball, soccer(also known as football) or whatever other sports. Almost all of them have some type or premium service, and they do have quite a few subscribers. But what would happen to, say baseball, if it went to a PPV format for the world series. How many people would still watch it? (I honestly don't know, I think it's just something interesting to consider) thx for taking me serious if not then its appreciated as well but yah my point exactly

Not sure how many people agree with me, but the actual price is only a part of the issue. I would perhaps be willing to pay $15-20 if I knew that those who can't afford it can still watch a free stream. As it is, I am really bothered by this all-or-nothing attitude of MLG and I probably wouldn't pay even if it was $5-10 just out of principle. For me, PPV is a very unappealing business model when it comes to sports.

ESL premium is GBP3 per month. You can play in the leagues, sponsor the ESL anti-cheat client development, and watch tournaments of every ESL game in HD.

i know this has probably been said over and over again in the last 150 pages, but i just want to post how disappointed i am that mlg chose this option for their business model.
i had high hopes for this mlg season, because of how terrific the last one was, but it appears i won't be involved in 2012 mlg because it is now ppv. i didn't mind vods or other perks being pay-only, but honestly i'm poor as fuck and i don't see myself spending $20 to watch an mlg event when there are so many other ways i can enjoy starcraft for free (like laddering, watching a replay, watching a stream, or watching another tournament).
i can't say i want this plan to fail, because anything that involves starcraft i hope succeeds. i wish them luck and i hope that in the future they're able to produce high-quality events that i'm able to watch for free, because thats what i've come to expect from mlg over the last couple years.

Actually it's not false. I watched the Superbowl for free too. In HD, with my rabbit ears. Whoever pays for cable is... well a sucker.
TBH Superbowl is free in France, in the middle of the night, but free for all. This game is boring as hell, that's why i just watch it one time, but it's free in France each year, and it's not sarcasm, it's real. 100% free.

this is factually incorrect, the super bowl was streamed for free on nbc.com. in addition to this, network tv like nbc is free (in the US).

I do not like their decision to do this. However the only ones that has real rights to complain are the gold card holders. They were falsely advertised into getting all 'pro circuit' events. Everyone else just has the option not to watch. Two things can happen. It is either a total disaster or a complete succes. My bet is on the former one. We have the power to decide.

MLG steals the spot light, then charges viewers.. What cancer has betrothed us!?
|
MLG is trading viewers for revenue.
They're counting on enough people thinking it's a good deal, and enough people thinking "I need to support eSports!" to watch that they won't burn as much money. But in burning less money, they're weakening their brand through less viewers. Unless charging makes them profitable right now, then I don't see how it can be a good business decision.

This is pretty much the only way Sc2 can sustain itself without massively expanding it's viewerbase.

As their Viewers and supporters, and the reason they got so popular we got all the rights to complain. without their viewers they would of never taken the skyrocketing success they got in such a short period time. yes must of us dont pay inclusing my self, but the reason the mlg got the attention of so many sponsors is cuz they all saw the fanbase and the followers MLG was bringing and made a marketing move for their best. u take out the Viewers what will the sponsors be looking at in the event?

And that's another thing that pisses people off, why buy a gold membership for $30 for an eventthat has a LQ stream when that money could be used to watch this event in HQ and the other one in LQ. This is supposing that you only wanted to spend about that amount of money on MLG for that year which I guessed went for most people who bought the gold card.

It's not too amazing, but 10$ is at least comparable to a movie ticket or something. I cannot speak for everyone, just myself, but I would suggest at least part of the problem is:
1) MLG was already established as a 'free' event in terms of streaming. It gained fans and a following this way. To my mind, it's wrong to establish something as a free service and then ask people to start paying for it without substantial increases in what is being provided - which I don't see as being the case.
Effectively, they've created expectations and laid out what their service is. And they've done a great job of that. Changing the basis of their service though once that's done is, imo, wrong. If I've gained the same quality service in the past for free, why should I pay for it now?.
2) MLG is trying to do this out of line with its competitors. Equally awesome, and some arguably better events (depends on your POV), - Dreamhack, Homestory Cup, TSL, etc - provide free services. Until the time when such competitors DON'T provide free services, there exists a legitimate question as to why I should pay for MLG whilst not needing to for equal/superior product. It's already established precedent that these things are free at varying degrees of quality.
If MLG need to raise extra revenue, I don't begrudge them doing that. The problem is simply that they're now charging for what they provided for free in the past, and for that which none of their competitors do. I'd suggest there are better ways of raising the revenue than that - charging for 720p/1080p for example, whilst providing a free 420p stream with only the biggest games on it rather than them all. I'd argue they'd actually get more money from that option too, since this way I suspect a lot of people will just not bother to watch at all - this thread certainly seems to confirm that.
So yeah, the amount isn't the problem to me - it's the charge itself and the way it's being implemented.
