If $20 is out of your budget or if you just don't like the idea of paying to view the Arena Live, there are other options. Pool some money with friends, or attend a Barcraft in your area. If there are no local Barcrafts, organize one—and let us know your plans so we can help promote it. Lastly, all matches will of course be made available free to everyone as VOD, one week after the Arena wraps up.
In the end I'm sure some of you will be very vocal in your displeasure of our plans, but I truly hope that once you have had some time to digest what we have planned, you will see it for what it is—a required step in furthering the growth and success of eSports.
I mean why stop there? Stay an extra hour at work, clean the shit infested bathroom for that extra $20, give another 5 bjs on the corner, THIS IS FOR ESPORTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The winter arena is like adding shrimp to your steak at outback; it's a bit overpriced, but not necessary. you're still getting a pretty good steak without the addons.
Uhm, it's quite reasonable to believe that something advertised as Pro Circuit Arena would actually be included in your ticket that would cover all Pro Circuit events this year. thanks for your quite helpful response. the point is that the gold membership holders aren't losing out on anything they were promised. this winter arena is content that is additional, and technically any type of membership that was previously purchased, doesn't include this type of content. do i think a membership should warrant a discount of events of these types? yes. do i think the price point is too high for an event of this type? yes. but i wasn't promised anything like arena events included with my membership, so i think it pertinent to remind people of this fact. MLG has been good in the past about changing their stances on things that evoke so much ire in the community (like this). I wouldn't be surprised to see a drop in the price point, or a free low quality stream to be added. it's obvious that they're fumbling through this thing, trying to find a fair way (to themselves and the community) to provide quality content while maintaining some kind of business model. make your opinions on the matter heard guys, but keep in mind that MLG has been pretty fair with us in the past, and they deserve a little more respect and patience from us in the community while they try and figure this uncharted territory out. rather than posting rude or immature posts to MLG, or even Sundance himself, speak out on forums like these, and ultimately speak with your wallet. to have some in the community threaten to boycott MLG entirely, or even threaten to "skull fuck" Sundance personally, really puts a black eye one the community as a whole. even if those people are the vocal minority. Let me get this straight. MLG changed their Pro Circuit into something I didn't pay for with my gold membership. I can argue: I thought there were 6 live events, in 2012 there are only 4. That may sound like splitting hairs. What if they made all of their events "arenas" and had only one live championship, like last year's Providence? There's nothing stopping them from doing that, and charging $$ for esports. Whoops, I guess I only paid for one event. Too bad my membership is canceled by the end of the year anyway. I don't know why you don't see a problem with "re-classifying" something so you can charge people who thought they'd already paid. I'm sad if MLG is not breaking even financially, I'd rather they are successful. However, I'm not going to pay them $20 for something I thought I already did and is overpriced anyway. I don't have that kind of money right now, and if I did, Gom would get it first. I also canceled my pitchfork pre-order. Edit: changed "tournament" to "pro circuit" Why are you operating under the assumption that they're not profitable? Why not operate under the assumption that they noticed MLG gets away with PPV and they think that with an inferior product they can appeal to our heart strings and grab some extra cash as well. I really wish people would open their eyes a bit. How does an company exist if they have been in the red for years according to them? How do they generate 50 million in 2009 and not find a way to make a profit? Baseless biased speculation on your part. Plenty of startups operate in the red while building their business. Eventually, they have to find a way to make a profit or fail and I think MLG might be hitting that critical point.
MLG have been running for 10 years. Don't be ridiculous

I am lucky to have enough resources to pay for this. I'm European so MLG hours won't be on par with my availability, but I want to give back to people trying to establish e-sport in time. And I love SC2. Of course, 20$ seems too much compared to GSL. But overall, looking at what has provided MLG last year, I feel that I could at least give back something. Maybe Gold membership as well.
The only odd thing is to make this move on the same time as Assembly. Seems really hard especially for European viewers. Or we can think that it was intented to test it mainly on US customers, that could make sense.

This is cruel, I dont have 20 bucks to watch MLG so I am going to be missing all the games, thanks for nothing. You are ruinning eSports, instead of making it grow you are trying to fill your pockets asap.

This will damn nearly kill the european viewership imo. Which if you think in the lines of being real esports fan won't be a problem, no matter where you live. But in this chaotic time of various organizations throwing in investor money to establish themselves as the biggest league, I hate the "WE ARE DOING THIS FOR ESPORTS" propaganda thing to be thrown around, when the goal of these event organizers like MLG, IPL is to raise the bar high enough to kill the others while being able to sustain their model financially. So you need 100 000$ to fly your players and be able to offer high production value. I don't remember TSL3 needing that sort of funds and it was easily the most thrilling and memorable esports fan experience in my life.
Very very true. Personally i won't buy it. I bought so far: NASL Season 1, GSL nearly every season, GSTL, HSC 3/4, IEM, MLG Silver but for me this is to much for an event that i only can view half of it. For 10$ i would have maybe made it. And as someone mentioned we are an international community so killing basicly 95% percent of the european audience is pretty damn ignorant. It is not like the nfl where the audience is basicly all american. And for people outside the western world it is impossible to watch. Yes, mlg is no charity company but i dont think this a good way to adress your audience, espacially after the silver pass stuff and now basicly screwing all gold members over.

Although the definitely need a way to make these tournaments more sustainable financially this is likely not the answer. But we will see.

Yep, and Slasher is not part of MLG anymore.

This is not the way for E-sports to grow, sure you can maybe make more fancy tournaments and such, but less people will actually experience them. Offering more to less people is a step backwards if you ask me. E-sports grows from people telling their friends about awesome games they've seen, however if there's nothing you've seen... Some people either can't pay for it or don't want to because the money can be spend 'better' somethign else.

I think I'll pay if I stay at home saturday night. A normal night in a club/bar would cost the same (or (way) more), so...
I hope the 20$ will be converted to euros though, and that it will not cost 20€

I can't pay for this, and I wouldn't pay even if I could. No idea why this isn't part of the Pro Circuit, or that there isn't even some kind of deal for gold or silver subscribers.

Transitioning from 10$ for 3 months (MLG silver, mostly worked to watch ~2 tournaments with one silver pass IIRC) to 20$ for one weekend is obviously going to feel like a total ripoff for every fan. So effectively I would have to pay 4 times as much for basically the same service.
There will be no crowds there... Just non stop Nos or Dr. Pepper commercial in the breaks. And to all people saying that there will be no commercials... Dr Pepper Pregame Show - hard to imagine that it won't be any commercials afters seeing this in the MLG program. Show nested quote +On February 15 2012 02:00 nihlon wrote: It could be advertisement without commercials. Though you're probably right. Geez guys, why do people keep buying into the bs that there are going to be commercials? Let's look at a quick example here: http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/46/events/halftime-showNow this year's superbowl halftime show was sponsoed by Bridgestone. However, did this mean that they spammed commercials during the half time show? No they didnt! Yes they had commercials before/after the show, but here's the key thing: they did not play commercials in the middle of content. If nothing is going on, there's nothing wrong with displaying logos and such. If they start playing an actual commercial, yea I would agree that shouldn't be part of the PPV experience. But you guys make it sound like you want MLG to have no advertising period. Are you that stupid?
I don't understand why the half time show is relevant. Isn't the actual Superbowl more valid for a comparison. Which had quite a few commercials.
Anyways, I don't mind them running commercials, but if its going to be PPV, there should be much less commercials throughout the event.

"Bottom line: we weren’t willing to ask our loyal fans to spend money on a $20 dollar product that we think should’ve cost $10, while also ourselves profiting in the process. And that’s the main reason why we’re not in the referral program. To be honest, we weren’t really thrilled with the details of the program itself either, but that reasoning was secondary to the aforementioned."
Team EG has a new fan.

!!! WE WERE TRICKED !!!
MLG hyped this tourney. Gave us free online qaulifiers. Then one week before the whole thing goes down they announce this "Experiment".
Hey sc2 fans even though you've been purchasing gold memberships for a month and assumed we would follow the standard buisness model. We're now not going to let you watch the event live unless you give us $20.00. Oh by the way, as long as you stop following SC2 for a week you may be able to enjoy the vods spoiler free.
I'm shocked MLG donned the cloak and dagger and stuck it to loyal fans. They should man up and postpone this experiment until the next arena, when it can be fully transparent.
On top of all that, this may be violating a Blizzard limitations policy.

Limitation of Usage Neither you nor the operator of any website where your Production(s) may be viewed can force a viewer to pay a "fee" to be able to view your Production(s).

"And the Dr Pepper MLG Ultimate Access Stream (more info on this soon) will be free to all, without an Arena pass, all weekend long"
I kinda missed this in my first read of the OP.
Seems like there is going to be a free stream.

This is the reason ( one of many ) why SC2 will eventualy fail. At the same time you see games like LoL getting really popular.... I wonder why ??

Sundance has already tweeted that it does not apply, no explanation why tho.
