Is there a difference between a 'community' and the people? Every time I hear about how "great" the sc2 community is, it's always from someone like Day9 (which is annoyingly over-positive about everything lol) and how "nice" everyone is. Well yeah, people are nice to day9 because he is a "celebrity", but no one really cares about each other anywhere else. Give me 1 reason to care about how well some random person is doing on the ladder, or care about my opponents, and on the same leve, give them 1 reason to care about me. Exactly, there is no reason. Everyone only cares about the celebrities of the game.

When I hear about the community from the fans/players, all I hear about is how tournaments arent paying their players or someone is caught cheating or stealing, or how this or that tournament was a giant flop.

Every time I get on the ladder, all it takes to set someone off is not saying GG at the end of a game, and then that player wants to literally kill me for it lol.

I'm very greatful for all of the 'content' that is pushed out by certain branches of the community (pro players, sponsored events, esports-centric companies and teams), but the actual fans and players of the game is just the most negative community I've ever seen. These forums are so filled with trolls and hipsters. I have met MAYBE 2 or 3 "nice" people on sc2, and the rest have been little kids making threats over the internet because I cant do anything about it.

Depends how you mean. Partially I think it's a hold over idea from the BW days. Where by and large it was an older crowd and a tighter community. Then there was a huge influx of people for SC2 and the dynamics changed a lot. And in case people get mad, you can lump in with the new wave because although I was lurking for longer, I only signed up during Beta announcements.

But it still holds true to some extent. We were getting all in a ruffle by that Halo Reach talk show. But they were legitimately jealous of the amount of energy behind the SC2 community for content generation whether talk shows, barcrafts, community tournaments, etc. So I don't know, we probably got the good with the bad..

Do you have the link to this Halo Reach show?

I tried finding it, but I can't remember what it was called. We were all aflutter because they were talking about how geeky SC2 players? or fans looked? Or something like that. but most of what they were talking about was how much the Halo Reach community sucked for sitting on their hands and waiting for good things to happen. It was a call to action that had the misfortune of targeting SC2's fashion sense and so edrama. But I thought they had some pretty good points overall.

I noticed on sc2 ranks that the number of players who did 1v1 ladder from last season decreased drastically. I've also noticed a lot of my friends stopped playing the game, so I'm wondering if players who have played the game before are quitting.

Season 5: http://sc2ranks.com/stats/league/all/1/all/0/142
Season 4: http://sc2ranks.com/stats/league/all/1/all/0/141
Season 2 (peak): http://sc2ranks.com/stats/league/all/1/all/0/130

Suggestions:
1. Perhaps figure out a way to reduce ladder fear?
2. Purchase stuff in a store using ladder points (like WoW pets or something)?

Update: Fixed season 3 to season 2

Update: Here's a great thread that addresses many of the problems we've discussed here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=308482

how about blizzard upgrates their crap 0.2 battle net to battle net 1.0 scbw/wc3, will help alot
i personally didnt play this game since last year july

but my impression was back then when i used to play, that ladder 1v1 is made for freaks/people with no life or to much free time call it how ever you want

for normal people/casual player it was crap, in example i played usually once/twice in 2-3weeks, so obviously if you dont play for 3 weeks you would get worser, now i come online and play 3 games again way to strong opponent (macro wise) cause mmr doesn't get reduced over time ... result coming online playing 3 games and losing them, then coming online 3weeks later and losing again, wow great fun ?!? if the guys who created the match maker had just some little human brain they would have include the casual gamer feature of mmr reduction over time (points reduction as well obviously, else this could be abused)

im guessing team liquid is not a community.

I'm guessing the author of the original quote was insinuating with the lack of systems such as a general chat system, Blizzard is haltering the in-game growth and interaction of the community.

The "balance" of the game feels more like they are catering to only z and p and are anti terran, simply because all the top players in the world are terran. They have become so good at the game that blizzard is afraid of losing 2/3s of their customer base. Hence they create "artificial balance".

Everyone must agree that late game PvT is WAY more of a problem than late game ZvT. Without stats just by a decent metagame knowledge its obvious that a long PvT game swings hugely in the favour of the P. And yet this hasnt been addressed at all and protoss gets another buff because honestly put the protoss players arent able to adapt their strategies. Not to mention lategame ZvT despite what others would have you believe is still HEAVILY zerg favoured. If zerg has a slight lead in the mid game it translates exponentially into a HUGE lead in the late game when they can make an infblarmy and have enough of a bank to remax into w/e the zerg wants.

You're a professional level SC2 player?

Wait, you're not?

Oh, so balance doesn't concern you at all and you're just making excuses and whining. I see.

This attitude is the death of sc2 imo. SC2 is balanced for the highest level, but that really doesnt work out for most of us. Terran at the highest level is awesome, we have all seen it, but even in high masters, people don't have nearly those kind of micro or multitasking skills and the "balance" goes out the window.

Terrans are quitting in droves and this is why. Don't believe me, go play 20 games on ladder and see how many you run into. Repeat the experiemnt 10 times. I can tell you its between 10-20% terrans and going down.

If you have the time to log onto teamliquid and call people freaks/no lives, i am sure you could afford a to play a few games on ladder so that you don't blame external things for you sucking balls at this game.

If you're a casual, go play customs. Not like you benefit the ladder in anyway with your poor skills and condescending attitude.

I'm experiencing a little bit of burn out but I'm also bombarded with all sorts of amazing tournaments and streams to watch. It's kind of a combination of running out of free time and StarCraft being a lot more fun to watch than to play (for me)

Seasons are so short they stopped mattering, which is why I stopped 1v1ing. Only played about 15 1v1s this season. Although I play a lot of 2v2s and 3v3s but that is because its a good way to hang out w/ friends.

What a depressing bunch of posts I've read in this thread.

I still play ladder every day because I love this game. I've been masters since it was made available, I have no chance of ever getting GM, but I play out of love and for the competition. See you on ladder emos.

Yeah, I don't like cheese, but this attitude is way worse. If you want an easy game, go play something else. Also, can someone end the myth of the "sunset of the terrans" where people make baseless claims that terrans are quitting because the game is to hard. You can throw in some random stats from SC2ranks that you cherry picked to prove your point, too. I am sure there is a thread with a few links.

Seriously, do you want them to make the game easier so you can win more vs protoss or zerg? Or make those races worse so you can beat players at your current skill level? Do you really think your that much better than the people you lose to? Or did you just hit the point where the game got hard and your win rate dropped to 50%?

Are you sure you didn't lose in the mid game, but it took the protoss till late game to finish you off? After all, terrans turtle pretty well.

Agreed, this is a bummer. My only sad point with the ladder is then it is locked and everyone does mass cheese to get as many quick wins as possible. But I don't want an easy game. Though a more stable game might be nice.

This is most likely because of the shortened seasons that blizzard has implemented. If you think about it, there are probably quite a few people that won't play their placement matches or get a chance to play at all during a shorter season such as Season 4 and 5. In season 2 however, the time period was much much longer therfore the statistics will show that a greater number of people having joined the ladders. I'm sure there are people that either stopped played the game or have begun playing only team and/or custom games, but I believe my original point holds more weight. Other people may have mentioned this before me.
