You do realize BW, with all it's supposed community glory, pales in comparison to size and scope of SC2. Even as numbers dwindle, SC2 is much more popular than BW ever was globally.

1) The race that used to be most represented (Terran) is having a lot of players lose motivation to play
2) Season was during intense part of school and holidays (people being out of town and not playing)
3) Short seasons

I think, the lack of frequent patch is underrated reason. I think frequent match will definitely makes more people stay in the game.

this has something to do with it also. in the beta, seeing terrans mule their way back into games they had lost was an obvious issue. THIS IS JUST GETTING FIXED NOW. losing game after game to frustrating issues that you know will not be fixed anytime soon, if at all, just got tiring. over the course of a few hundred games these issues might not be apparent. but over the course of thousands you start to see trends that pop up way too often.

For me its:

1) Play against mutas
2) Try to defend the correct variation of 1/1/1
3) Play a PvP

Joy.

The game itself has a lot of very annoying or stressful/dissapointing things that makes it a unfunny game (from the player's viewpoint). Well, many of these things have been said already.

In my case, i'm mainly a team player...that's because here i can find 100 times more fun.

Anyways, i'm a fervent 1v1 watcher.... but i can't play it for myself as i wish. :/

Theres a very specific name for those kind of players: bad. Look at NASL showmatch from last night. Alive can hold 6pools just fine.

... non sequitur much? SC2 can be more popular than bw ever was and still have shitnet 2.0 which kills the community.

I only played the placement match for this season. It wasn't ladder fear that stopped me from playing. I just spent most of my spare time playing other games.

Surprised so many people don't ladder because of BM. I love getting BM'd. It's fun, they're obviously really mad, and I get to throw in a witty one liner or two in response to make them even more mad . Maybe that's because I come from a CNC background where a huge amount of people were bm kids, manner seems so important inn this community!
I love being a Terran, even though it's the hardest race by far, it doesn't get me down...I just have found playing team games and the likes of Marine Arena, with friends, more enjoyable of late.

Hell, MKP almost hold a 6 pool by going CC first.

I'm tired of playing a race that's tough in plat (TErran) and that gets the most hate from ppl. I lost my motivation to play a while back (3-4 weeks ago) and although I have time, I don't feel like hitting that yellow button due to ladder anxiety. I feel that what I put into sc2, I get very little back in terms of the UI, Bnet and the actual game. This season I have played 3-4 ladder games (used to play 40). And I have no reason to resume my laddering..

Switch races maybe? I used to be a terran but hated their mechanics. I was considering stoping playing the game entirely but switched to zerg instead. I still have a lot of interest in the game and getting better.

1. Perhaps add maps that are worth playing, how am i supposed to ladder a lot when there are 7 maps from which I've banned 3, so I'm playing the same maps over and over again and I don't even like them
Solution: add more maps + more bans.
2. Battle.net is a lonely boring place, all you can do is click find match button and that's all I do. If you want to get involved, you can do that, but that requires a lot of time and effort outside the game to find the people to do so.
Solution: Fix battle.net
3. There are no statistics about your games, just some boring match history that requires so much time to open anyway
Solution: Add more features to 1v1 statistics, I can't think of all of them, but statistics about every maps, every bo, every race, etc.. No, I don't want to use Sc2gears for that.
4. How am i supposed to keep on playing when i get 10 pvp's in a row? I don't care that "this is your luck" or something, I don't have all the time in the world to click the find match button, so if I play 10 games, I want them to be against all races.........................................?
Solution: Fix that.
5. The division system is completely retarded, there isn't a real way to compare yourself to your opponent and to all the people.... Just no comment, you are top1 master in one division, but in other you're like top25. Seriously? What is the point in that? The whole statistics are meaningless, you don't get any information about your skill improvement.
6. Things that compare you to other players such as apm are completely ruined by absolutely no reason, good job Blizzard -1 thing that can compare you to other people.
I can continue, but there is no point, they have shown no intention in making battle.net a place that you can do anything else other than pressing "Find match" and then using 3rd party programs for statistics. So people like me who wanna play maybe 20 games a day are gonna play a lot less, because there is nothing to keep us continuing to play after a long series of pvp's or just nothing happening, just staying at one place, no way to guess after this 20 games, did I improve or not? Did my MMR jump high or not? Of course I'm not able to understand that, because of bonus pool. Well done.

I believe this guy said it best. All of this is way not people don't ladder and the people that do aren't having that much fun doing it
I'd love to get your help!

I think its because of the BM. Its totally unwelcoming to any new player. You get BM'd if you win and BM'd if you lose. Whats worse than feeling shitty because you lost and some ass is rubbing it in your face? A lot of people who play this game have terrible personalities. You cant grow a game when people who are just starting out are thrown in the mud. In tennis does the other player yell and cuss at you when you win or lose? No, and if they do they get disciplined.

LoL's players are a hundred times worse and it has a lot more players. It can't be just that.

Thats true but LoL also has an incentive for playing (i.e. improving your summoner and buying stuff from the store) Starcraft has none of that. Both WoW and LoL (two extremely popular games) have ways of improving your ingame character through playing (and you ALWAYS get rewarded no matter what) but in SC2 if you lose your "in game character" actually gets worse. Sure thats like real life somewhat but the point of a video game is to entertain and a lot of people probably dont find that entertaining.

This, I believe, is probably the main point in casuals playing ladder less and less. All we get is a couple portraits for getting to a number of wins. There needs to be more rewards/customization options/progression if SC2 is to become more casual-friendly. Perhaps this is not the direction we want SC2 to take but it is the key to retaining casual players.
Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid!

When you have a small, niche community, it becomes really easy to maintain regardless of features. Nothing about Bnet 2.0 is killing the community. That's not to say it might not make you feel lonely when you have no friends playing SC2, but adding a bunch of random idiots to a fullscreen spamchat wouldn't fix random ladder representation.

I picked up a copy of SC2 for one of my friends, after 120 games as zerg and ~550 ladder points he was still in bronze, he quit playing shortly after citing "fucking stuck in wood league" as his reason.

how can it be so that almost a third of players are in bronze? should there not be a more even distribution like 20% bronze / 20% silver / 20% gold / 20% platinum / 18% diamond / 1.9999% Masters / 0.0001% GM ?

for a lot of players having to spam grind out games to earn promotions seems so laborious its bound to put people off? Not everyone has as much free time as they would like (believe it or not some nerds on the interwebz have girlfriends ;P)

Even to make the promotions more transparent, so you can actually see how close you are to "levelling up" could maybe help?

<edit> perhaps your "hidden" ranking should be available to see? like nearly every other ladder based game you can see your ELO? </edit>

I really didn't realise that is was as bad as it is.

i had a long break from playing sc2. when comming back i wanted to play some customs just to get used to it again. now im somehow stuck in those. i like the variety of skill. masters who bash me but also lower skilled players so i can just macro a bit and get just try to get to max asap. i played 6 ladder games just because i felt like it... i had to play 6 PvP and then i was like "fuck it" and went back to customs because i was sick of it.

also people are less whiny in customs and the games usually last longer. i hope for a custom system where you can put up titles so i can look for a certrain type of player to increase. i more and more dislike the ladder system. but i´ll start next again next season cause i like the new maps.
