Also on JP's interview with ESFI or Dignitas he confirmed less events then last year, Which had 6.

Yeah I really liked the format they had last year, the seeding system was f-ed up and the grand finals needed pool play, but other than that I really liked it. Damn reddit kids ruin everything with their whining... On January 21 2012 08:39 Clank wrote: they have clearly stated that this only applies to the winter season and not the rest of the year. Hmmm alright I'll put the pitchfork back in the closet.... for now. But I think it would be even more annoying if MLG changed formats twice this year.

Thanks for the positive response. I'm a statistical programmer, and coded this up during my lunch break. I can understand MLG's perspective in not wanting the content writers anymore, as I don't think our articles had a very good ROI compared to streaming important matches. Articles have historically served two purposes: 1) Capturing the community 2) Reminding people that an event was going to occur Unfortunately for MLG, it's pretty much impossible to capture the SC2 community. The Starcraft community lives on TeamLiquid and on Reddit, and I imagine the average SC2 fan doesn't visit the MLG site much when there are no matches going on. If you look at the mlgpro.com forums, it's pretty much a ghost town in the SC2 section. The same thing happened years ago with the Smash community. MLG's response was to buy Smashboards. The reason these moves are good for MLG is that they can leverage a much higher ad rate than a single site. We all heard during the SOPA stuff that MLG moved 100 sites off of GoDaddy, and this includes things like Smashboards, Gamebattles, etc. As far as needing to remind people that events are going on, Reddit and TL do a pretty good job of that already. To get the eyeballs, they need more tournament matches. Matches that matter. There are dozens of weekend and online tournaments that come and go, but other than the GSL, none of them have any lasting impact. Some player gets some more fame, a few memories are created, some cash passed around, but they don't have the significance of say an Up and Down match. With the new structure, MLG gets to cast matches that have impact throughout the year. One tournament is feeding into another, and they're going to anchor their seasonal championship events with huge prize pools (I would around 100K+, but prize pools don't actually bring viewer, a feeling of significance does). MLG has chosen to be more like a traditional sports league. Host the competition to get the eyeballs, and let ESPN-like organizations provide the coverage. Of course I'm sad they closed their writing department, as they were a great company to work for, and run by people who truly GET competitive gaming. If a spot opened up I'd jump right back in a heartbeat.

its what makes MLG , MLG its what adds an element of amazing to it the "winter arena" whatever it is needs an open bracket. anyone willing to fly there and pay to enter can enter it. if they think they are good enough at SC2 to possibly win that first place spot and they spent money to fly there to do it, then by dammit i wanna see them play EDIT: lol, just read it more closely. the winter arena will not have a massive crowd then dangit, i guess the problem is that MLG is now hosting less events in 2012 than in 2011 (that have massive crowds) thats lame!
