Julia "Ailuj" Childress was the first female StarCraft 2 player to play a match on the main stage of an MLG tournament. She played against LosirA on Friday of MLG Providence. Here's her interview with ESFI World, where she speaks about what it was like playing on the stage, her thoughts about the attention that female gamers have been getting, why Vancouver should be a stop next year and more. Time stamps under the video:
00:40 - Introduction, how she got into StarCraft 2 01:16 - About her streaming (viewership, controlling the chat, finding mods) 03:03 - Advice for people wanting to get into streaming 03:45 - Do female gamers get unwarranted attention? 04:40 - What do females need to do to get more notice in the community? 05:30 - ZOWIE DIVINA, general thoughts on female-only events 07:33 - First MLG? Competing in other tournaments? 08:35 - Why did you come to MLG and what do you think of the event so far? 09:20 - Strongest argument for MLG selecting Vancouver as a stop in the future 10:15 - Initial reaction when finding out she would be playing LosirA on the main stage 11:05 - What it was like playing in the booth on the main stage 12:10 - Did results live up to expectations? 13:50 - Relationship with Check Six Gaming, her current team 14:35 - Any reason behind choosing Check Six over a female-only team? 15:20 - Girls of StarCraft group on Facebook 16:45 - Short and long term goals as a competitive gamer 17:25 - What other games are you playing competitively? 18:15 - Where to find her, shoutouts
Thanks for the awesome interview and post. We welcome Julia to the team and are so glad to see the community take to her so well. I can promise you that you will see more out of her from us soon .
Its just pretty nice to finally have a female gamer in the spotlight after a whole year of starcraft. And though i expected her to get out by two quick 0-2 losses, she actually went pretty deep in the loserbracket, which is awesome
First of all, it's extremely helpful that the OP states what are the questions, and when I can find them in the video. Thanks a lot!
Then, on a less positive note :

Amazing interview. Her responses are enlightening and her reaction to the "hot topic" issues was fairly moderate, which is exactly what'd you expect from an SC2 female gamer (instead of the extremely polarized men who argue an issue that doesn't even apply to them).

@t: great interview, hope to see more girl gamers being able to compete in the big tournaments.
I seriously don't see why people constantly bring up the idea of having a female only tournament. The only reason why sports separate men from women is because of a proven biological advantage. But for games, men and women start on equal ground. The creation of a tournament just for women, even with the intention to help further female presence in the scene, is sexist.
I totally support the growth of the female presence in the scene, I just think that creating a tournament just for a particular sex and having people openly promote it is a terrible, if not actually detrimental, way of going about it.

I think a few nice female tournaments in the first year(s) are really nice. Girls can see girls playing the game, adopt them as a sort of rolemodel, and get into the game themselves. Once there is a nice amount of girls, some top girlgamers will probably pop up in IPL/MLG/NASL events and girlevents are not really necessary anymore
Am I the only one that noticed her extremely inefficient keyboard shortcuts? While playing Losira she was constanly moving her arm to the right side of the keyboard. That really slows a player down..
I was also kinda surprised that she's only diamond, thought she was masters. Either way, she's cool.

At least thats how i see it
Well, in my experience I can say that the few girls I know which see SC2 (one of them being my own wife) don't care if the one playing is a girl or not. They just watch a game between two players wherer bugs, aliens and little soldiers go boom, which is pretty entertaining once you know why they go boom.
One of the players being female is irrelephant. If you like the game you will play, and if yo don't you won't. I don' see my wife playing sc2 just because one girl does. She is happy watching it and playing zombies vs plants on her Iphone, or WoW.

I dont quite understand why shes so popular while being diamond, there are masters female players.
'cuz people find her hot, I guess... If all the female master players would come out of hiding and just look anywhere close to standard I'm sure they'd get alot of attention aswell.
Standard looks + shared interest = Hot... (this goes for girls aswell. Ever seen a standard guy playing guitar (or w/e) laying down way more girls than he should?)
got lucky and saw her live. Was very impressed by her composure and unit control. Definitely the sort of person who if she practiced full time and worked with someone to help her build competitive focus (she seems very community centric which will unfortunately not result in the sort of practice regimes that get you into GM) could be a genuine pro. Cool under pressure, loads of passion and a thick skin: the three most important character traits in a pro. Skill just takes time and dedication, the psychology is a lot harder to learn.
Glad to hear she beat up some people in the tournament. I saw some of the Losira match but not a lot (i blame Skyrim for everything) so i didn't have a clue how she went beyond the inevitable 0-2. Interesting about the quantity of lower players. It's a great thing anyone can enter the tournament and get that experience. Just seeing her talking about the Losira match. That had to be special. Losing to Losira and Destiny? Can't complain there right? She also looks a lot like someone too... I wanted to say Leelee Sobieski but after googling maybe not so much.
Yeah, lovely lass, good head on her shoulders, hope she does well and get Masters etc. Best of luck to her~!

I find it hilarious that she was asked "do you think females get unwarranted attention online?" when this thread only exists because she's a girl. Where are the interviews with the hundred other diamond players who played at providence?
Oh, that's right, they don't exist because nobody cares about them or remembers their name. And half the comments in this thread are about how pretty or cute she is, to the great pride of TL's male userbase.
Props to her for having the courage to actually do this, though. I can imagine that not only the negative attention, but also the enlightened TL posters who will claim to be a fan of you just because you have breasts, will eventually be bothersome if not intimidating enough to get a girl to never participate in a tournament.
lol, first up against a silver leaguer, next up losira? thats kinda harsh :p btw really nice you actually took the time to write down what question came at what time, everyone should do that..
I'm happy to know female sc2 scene is growing. Still I feel female gamers will never been taken seriously and be competitive enough due to the nature of most guys to gather around the few girls and compete for their attention and the fact most of these girls do (obviously) enjoy all this attention that requires no real effort. Every female gamer I've seen enjoys the social aspect of the game way more than the competitive one and I was really surprised to look at this interview and see Ailuj has actually goals and expectations for herself as a player.

Thanks for stating the obvious, I'm pretty sure everyone's aware that she's female you know. That's not the only reason she is getting this attention though, let's be honest.
First off she is one of very few girl gamers on a really established team like Check Six, so immediately a lot more people will want to know about that story (which was indeed covered on every interview she did) than just some randomly picked diamond player from the open-bracket. She's good in front of a camera too, which cannot be said for a lot of pro players after months of interviews and PR.
Then there's the fact that MLG decided to put her on the main-stage and give her some exposure. Now most people will say "Well Flo is master league and has attended multiple MLG's but she's never been given the chance!?" Which I completely understand and agree with, however they probably feared doing it for so long because of the backlash the community would give them for it. There was a lot of downtime on that friday too, not many top level games were being played, if at all, so it was the perfect timing for them to go ahead and do it. I fully expect now that Julia was given the opportunity, we will see more girl gamers going up on the stage and getting their slice of the action too.
Props to MLG though. I think it was a great choice to make. Yes, she got completely rolled by Losira as everyone expected, but the statement it made was more important and that's what matters.

Why on earth hasn't a moderator taken action on this post? Does TL care about how female gamers are perceived in the community?
because its just a fun joke... some people really have tight assholes on this sight
and to the people complaining about it being a little sexist, yea it is a bit but its more then worth it if we can get more female support and more females involved in the community.
Why on earth hasn't a moderator taken action on this post? Does TL care about how female gamers are perceived in the community?
Look at the spoiler and you will realise its a quote from incontrol on state of the game mocking how people react to females on forums. So your logic is that because she's "female and good looking," sexist comments are justified. What you fail to realize is that sexist comments can't be justified under any circumstances.

So, if you went this far, you deserve to know that was a joke. Ha. Ha. Ha.
I made a reference to the number one funniest one liner according to this website (my god, it's so unfunny ><). Basically, my "tight asshole" wants to say that you shouldn't make private jokes when the people who won't understand you may get offended. And please, don't explain a private joke with another private joke, it simply makes no sense. It's not because I wrote "One liner <3" that everyone is supposed to understand. I hope the amount of publicity that has come out of this MLG doesn't put ridiculous amounts of pressure for her to perform from now on. Hate it when someone is turned from just enjoying the game to almost forced performance standards.

Funny how you ignored my reasoning about perception and instead chose to call it a "knee jerk" reaction. If only we could always change what someone else said in order to make it easier to argue against .

I don't really know how I feel about this. On the one hand I think it's great that we are getting a more diverse group representing us at MLG and I support women in gaming and all that jazz, but on the other I saw MLG throw this girl from diamond league against Losira, and put her up on the stage while Tastosis tried to make it seem like she had a chance. It was kind of painful to watch. and I felt bad for her. I hope she does well, I she gets better, but I think that making BFD about this is equally sexist and portrays our community as a bunch of nerds who go OH SHIT A GIRL every time something like this happens rather than the loving, accepting one we are.

I guarantee you there are females who would take offense to that. It's kind of silly to suggest otherwise. The context is rife for some to take offense, given that the topic is a (rare) female progamer and the first reaction is "pee in her butt." Few females would get the inside joke. Even if they do get it after reading the thread, it doesn't necessarily take away the offensiveness since again it's possible for jokes to be offensive.

Yeah, forget females: I'm male, and I found it very distasteful and not the least bit funny. Its being a reference to an equally distasteful, non-funny joke doesn't change that.
To me StarCraft/BW is like a Colosseum where nerds fight to the death. I am one of the people who watches the whole tournament. I'm happy she got on stage, she got to see how much she needs to improve, which is great for anyone and everyone. And LosirA is a pretty nice guy, if I wanted anyone to smash me in my nerd brain, I think I'd want it to be him too.
gg Julia. I'm sure you'll be in Masters/ or even Grandmasters in the future, one thing I did notice is you haven't setup your hotkeys yet, set them up so you don't have to move your right hand so far each time, you lost half your apm just because of moving your hand so much.

Even reading the spoiler, I still had no idea how it related to SOTG. That it took several pages to explain it in context says something I think...

I imagine that if a male diamond player played against Losira on the main stage of the national championship tournament, he would also be interviewed, and a thread would have been made. Her games vs Losira on the main stage are the main reason she caught anyone's attention. Yes, she is a female so she ended up receiving more of it than a male would, but these interviews wouldn't be here if she hadn't been thrust into that situation.

Really good for her. Tough break getting Losira but it's great to see a female up on stage playing some games of StarCraft 2.
Honestly, the more your average gaming fanatic gets exposed to normal, approachable, decent people who happen to be girls, the less likely he is to be his usual threatened, hostile self. It's all about exposure - people are dumb about what they don't get and, in fairness, a rather vocal subset of our community doesn't get women. Ideally, one day it'll be common place to see a girl competing on the mainstage and people won't give it a second thought. Then we can all just get on with living our lives.
Why is asking about how she chooses mod or controls chat such an important question, it came really out of the blue and the interviewer asked twice...what? Along with that the interviewer is trying to rush the next question so bad, almost cutting her off or not even taking in the very end of the last response from her

A lot closer than Julia vs Losira
I was really feeling that cannon rush in game 2 too bad she misplaced it
All the points against her because she is a girl worry me slightly. Just because girls get more coverage in gaming does not make it a sexist standard. It's not because she's a girl that she is getting attention, it is because girls are less common than guys by far in the gaming world. Novelty attracts attention; if she had been black, or a pro-athlete, or someone famous, or only had one hand, she probably would have gotten the same amount of attention.
That being said, let's not kid ourselves; she's getting attention as a diamond (she is a diamond yes?) because she is fairly attractive. There are definitely girls in the masters league and I bet there are girls who were playing at MLG Prov against some pretty famous names whose level of play far surpassed this girl, but got skipped over because they were typical girl gamers.

This is the truth. It also worries me that a lot of people don't get that Julia getting this much attention is actually GOOD for esports. Remember, there is no such thing as bad press.
The interview was pretty good, and Julia is a cool person. I like her calm and collected approach to all this drama.

Did they play against a Korean on stage?
why do you think they picked her to go up on stage? I'm so sure mlg wanted to showcase losira vs a diamond player on the main stage
I have nothing against this girl, I think she's attractive and all and props to her for going out to an MLG, but I think all this attention she's getting is unwarranted. A couple posters earlier have alluded to it, but it seems like most girls are more interested in the social aspect of starcraft and not the competitive nature of it, which is why we even watch it. I've watched her stream a few times, and have never seen her ladder 1v1 or play a custom 1v1 or anything. Someone linked her profile and she only has 15 wins...do you think any serious pro gamer would only have 15 wins on the ladder before a big MLG event?
Yet we don't care about any of this and just give her tons of attention and exposure for being a girl gamer. Where are the interviews for vileIllusion, who tore through the open bracket out of nowhere? Or the interviews for the hundreds of other Starcraft 2 players out there who are working very hard to make a name for themselves. I just don't see how this is fair and not sexist in any way.

Her being a girl might have "helped" putting her on stage but if she was playing some random player they wouldn't put her on stage would they?
She's had the courage to play against a korean on stage (well knowing that she'll catch a lot of attention/hate) for it. And that is totally fine, because she seems to be able to handle the trolls (that can't be said for a lot of females in our community).
However, I can't understand how anyone could give her crap for it. Try to think about it...you'll never be able to share Esports as an interest with your girlfriend when every female coming into the community needs to have a thicker skin than Idra.

I think the point is that Flo vs Jinro would have probably been a better mainstage match than Julia vs LosirA

It's obviously bothering people, why isn't it deleted then?
The fact that it got a warning is a joke and only happened because he isn't a "known".
But w/e.
Hope to see more of her in the future, just want a single girl to actually put in the effort and 8 hours to become a pro, I don't think anyone has even tried yet.
She's been a friend of mine for a while now (me and alej met her thru optikzero) so it's very nice to see her getting some recognition from the community, along with all the other female gamers.
I can see why this irritates some guys, I mean there are master and grandmaster players showing up to MLGs, hoping to make a name for themselves, and putting in more effort than this girl if results are any indicator....and then a pretty girl in diamond shows up, gets a main stage game against Losira, and then interviews.

That's life though.
Themz the breaks.
Atleast after her loss to Losira she won a couple times in the losers bracket before getting knocked out. She may have got wrecked by Losira but there was obviously a few people who couldn't beat her.
Going to your first live event to compete is such an experience for any gamer.
People also need to learn how to market themselves Being a girl obviously helps but there are thousands of males trying to be a gamer, it's harder to get known...
make a name for yourself and then work from there.
In all honesty, I never realized how many people neglect to think about the opening rounds of a OPEN tourney. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

Sometimes the hypocrisy in this forum simply amazes me. Had this girl been ugly or a guy this interview never would of even happened. Actually on top of that being diamond anything she said about gameplay would have been shouted down with a variety of insults because diamond players (don't know the game) or that is at least what some around here want to believe.
How about a little consistency around here people?
As for the interview. Decent enough I suppose. Always a good thing to see more women trying to break in. I hope it was just nerves bugging her because all the pauses and uh's and such leave a pretty bad impression on her public speaking ability. I appreciate the fact that she pretty candidly admits that being a girl gives her an advantage in stream viewers and such. I hope she can back her words though and get good enough to be up there with the pro's and isn't yet another "1 hit wonder".
Female-only tournaments? Lawl. If women are all for equality, then how about they fucking prove that they're worth being treated as equals? We are not all born equals in this world. If you truly believe that, then you're delusional. There's a difference between "treating" someone as an equal, and actually being equal. In having female-only tournaments, you're basically conceding to the fact that females can't keep up with males within the context of a pro-gaming environment.

Since over the time it has been proven that in esports female players are not able to compete with top male players why would you randomly throw in equality? From an objective point of view a girl achieving a result in esports is more worthy than a guy with the same result. I am pretty sure most female players agree on this and there's a reason 100% of the top players in SC2 are guys. Honestly having female tournaments only harms no one and makes esports more interesting, and if any random grandmaster guy is pissed they don't get the same attention as a diamond girl then they better work their ass off to get to a point where they deserve to be recognized rather than crying.
tldr: dont make random statements about girls claiming to be equal to guys in esports when nobody ever said so.

Actually, I don't see HOW it's been proven that girls can't compete at the same level as guys. In fact, scientific study has proven that women are actually better at multitasking than men are, which is an essential skill in Starcraft. I think it comes down to the fact that there are no women that commit to the game as much as the professional men do. It doesn't necessarily help with teams signing reportedly Diamond level players like SlayerS Eve, or Julia to CheckSix.
Women are separated out in physical sports like Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Soccer, etc. because the female body is not as athletic as the male body, however in a game like Starcraft or Chess, there's no handicap from being a female, it's just the lack of effort put in by the "professional" females compared to the professional males.

Putting effort in competing is the essential ability to become a top player in esports. Having a talent for multitasking only helps in the way. I remember you presenting this as one of the extremes of how people perceive girls getting attention in the community. I just happened to see the clip a couple hours before this interview was posted thought it would be recognized fairly quickly. Obviously this was a mistake on my part.
It was a joke people, does it make any sense that I would preface with comments regarding the interview and her articulation only to make a more retarded sounding remark? I got a warning, everyone can be happy now. Focus on how the attention that girl gamers are getting is actually a good thing as opposed to a sexist approach to esports.

The fact that there aren't any top female players could also just be representative of the lack of females who dedicate themselves to the game full time.
Your argument makes no sense to me, especially since the numbers obviously state that there's no top female player it's obvious to assume that, for whatever reason, the genders are not equal when it comes to esports.
You know what they say about making assumptions.... As far as I'm aware, I haven't heard of ANY female SC2 player that dedicates 8-12 hours of play to hone their abilities. The fact that there aren't any top female players could also just be representative of the lack of females who dedicate themselves to the game full time. I could say that because there are no top tier Nigerian players there is obviously some physical handicap that makes Nigerian players unable to compete at the highest level, when in fact the problem is that Starcraft 2 isn't IN Nigeria. You said it yourself "Putting effort in competing is the essential ability to become a top player in esports" why should female gamers get to take the spotlight away from male players who ARE putting in that effort to compete, when the female isn't even close to the same level of dedication?
So you are basically saying I'm right since you even go as far as saying girls can't dedicate as much time so they are not able to achieve same results as males. I never said they have inferior intellectual capabilities I just said that, for whatever reason, esports is not gender equal, and if you look at the numbers it's pretty self explainatory. And honestly I've never ever met a girl stating the contrary. I just don't understand why so many people are pissed and bring in equality out of nowhere. Please explain.
People don't like the idea of girls gaining popularity simply because they're girls without being good at Starcraft 2 when there are lots of guys out there who are struggling to be known. Read: HOW CUM SHEE FAYMUZ BUT NAWT MEEEEEE?!!!?
What they have forgotten is that those girls actually do work very hard to be the best gamers they can be and a lot of those guys aren't actually as great as they'd like to think.
I definitely agree that we need to actively support equality. Girl gamers are a rarity. There's nothing wrong with interviewers and tournaments actively looking for them. Especially if we're going to encourage other girls to pursue their dream of being a pro gamer.

Because she was a female gamer that had the remarkable fortune to be matched up against top Korean pro Losira. She became the first female starcraft player to play on mlgs main stage.
not all sports need females in them. don't need to give them special treatment to get them involved (none of my favorite sports are bi-gender). if they can't hang, they can't hang. find a new hobby. this is just dumb.

Because diversity is good, if there was more of it then this would be less of an issue. As it stands however communities need to have some way to promote a broader audience and a more diverse participant pool. Until girl gamers have a bigger representation in the community I don't see any real issue with giving them attention.
I can't really remark on the taking away the spotlight point because that seems like the most petty statement I've heard in quite a while. Are you implying that nobody, other than pros, should be ever be given recognition? This is such a terrible mindset to approach any community with. Dedication is important yes, but saying that only those who are absolutely the most dedicated should be the ones given any attention at all is stupid. You're stagnating growth by not providing exposure to a more diverse crowd. Following your logic, no tournament outside of the GSL should be paid any mind to since the Korean house practice structure is considered the most effective.

While I don't particularly care about Julia; saying anything about females in SC2 based on a Diamond level open bracket player that was annihiliated by Losira is beyond ridiculous.

If you do not believe that there is a barrier for females playing Starcraft. Just go to the battle net forums and search for "girl Gamer".

There is nothing mechanically barring women from being pro gamers. Right now the barrier is social. There just aren't many pro gamer girls so girls who might want to be pro gamers, have no one to emulate or admire. This might create a catch 22 where girls aren't becoming pro gamers because girls aren't pro gamers.
When we actively seek the girl pro gamers, we can actually give girls someone to emulate. It's just a fact that most girls probably aren't going to think "I want to be like iNcontroL!" They will however think "I want to be like Ailuj."
And for the record, Ailuj is a good Starcraft 2 player. It was hard to see because she was playing Losira and because being on the main stage is stressful in and of itself. Questioning her skill based on that match really isn't fair.

Wait, what? Work very hard? All she does is play team games. There's plenty of M/GM players at that tournament who have worked their asses off to get to the level they're at in order to do their best to compete. Hell, for the "obligatory female interview", Flo would have been a better choice, at least she puts effort into it. Like a previous poster said, there is nothing regarding the gender that's keeping female gamers out, it's the lack of dedication to it. If they practiced like male gamers, they could perform like them.
The big thing that gets me is the "omfg you sexists" when it's called out that the only reason she's up there was because she WAS female, when it's the obvious truth. Are you content with relegating them as being lessers, and deserving of special attention?

Probably not nearly as much as you like getting shit just because you happen to be in the majority. You get role models from Starcraft 2. You have players with whom you can identify. You did nothing to deserve them.
What role models do girls get? And why should they have to earn them when you didn't?
Dudes... when are you going to understand it's not about what's the right thing or the wrong thing to do.
It's about what people want to see. And yes, we enjoy seeing a girl playing Starcraft every now and then, even if she's not up to par with the pros. Especially if she's good locking.
At this point, it doesn't have the slightest thing to do with positive discrimination.
If you're not okay with it, just click somewhere else.
Let her have the spotlight. Also, people in minority will always have a bigger spotlight if they are trying to pierce in a highly dominated field....
It's hypocrite to think Huk/IdrA/Jinro or any foreigner's fame in Korea is not partially helped by the fact that they are the minority in the field dominated by the Koreans. And that a female doesn't share that same difficulty by trying to pierce in a field dominated EVEN WORSE by male. Female Competitors/Spectators makes e-sport more legit/'cool' in the eyes of the general population, so it is extremely healthy to encourage and support these minorities to continue, just like anyone trying to pierce into Korea should be encouraged as well (Go foreigners!).
Their story are usually very interesting too. Go go female players!
I like the idea of spotlighting female gamers to encourage more girls to try and break into the scene. However they definitely could have picked one that was above diamond league, this seems like they were trying a little too hard for that female attention.

As long as they are such a minority in gaming, yes, I believe they deserve special attention.
No, they should get as much attention as anyone else would.
Not anyone else is a minority.
Affirmative action FTW! I love giving shit to undeserving people.
Probably not nearly as much as you like getting shit just because you happen to be in the majority. You get role models from Starcraft 2. You have players with whom you can identify. You did nothing to deserve them.
What role models do girls get? And why should they have to earn them when you didn't?
What in God's name are you talking about? Please stay on topic. The interview and ailuj have nothing to do with some requirement that you've invented where everyone must have role models made popular.

I don't think anything I've said could be remotely construed as whining, I'm simply making the point that it's not a physical difference between female and male esports players. It should also be noted that Julia is not even close to the best female Starcraft players out there. I'm not trying to be sexist, but she's on Check6 for her personality, and her ability to draw attention and viewers, and she was on the mainstage because of her looks, and Losira, not her talent as a player. I happen to do work with a team that had players at Providence, and one of my teammates faced Puzzle not once, but twice. Did he make the mainstage? No, because his skill level wasn't high enough to warrant it. I think in a world that constantly fights over equality, people should actually believe in equality. If you were to look at my other posts about this, or my Twitter, you would see that I'm actually pretty supportive of this girl and her activity in esports, however at this point I think it's a bit silly to be conducting all these interviews and spotlights when she wasn't even the best female player at the event. It's great exposure for CheckSix, but from the outside, ESPECIALLY as a female gamer, it might be LESS productive putting the prettiest girl on stage, over the better player. We don't need the status quo to be seen as "I have to be pretty to be a successful female gamer",
dear Julia, please stop "scrolling" TLO used to do it and Day9 laughed at him for wasting apm, watching your match against losira half the time you were just hitting your arrow keys instead of macroing. Feel free to rebind those arrow keys to yghj so if you still feel compelled to worry about perfect camera angles over mechanics then you can be more efficient XD

Please stay on topic. That has nothing to do with the "discussion" in this thread.
I get the impression that many of you who criticize the interviews and the spotlight, are under the impression that interviews/forum threads/whatever are in short demand and that they need to be rationed out to the most deserving so that they're not wasted on the undeserving. I would just like to point out that this, in fact, is not the case. There is actually an almost unlimited supply of interviews available, as long as someone actually bothers to do them. It's not the case that if someone gets interviewed, then it means that someone "more deserving" does not get interviewed. It simply means that there is one more interview out there.
If I wanted to, I could have found the lowest skilled first time MLG player and interviewed him. "How is it, being a Bronze player at MLG?". He could have told us that he just picked up SC2 and that he wanted to become a pro during the next two years. He could have told us what his first impressions of MLG was or whatever. I could call it "The birth of a progamer". It may have been interesting and perhaps, in two years' time, it might even prove to be a real jewel of an interview to look back on, if he did succeed. But did I do the right thing? Did Leenock suffer a terrible injustice when I interviewed a bronze player instead of him? Was I somehow subtracting from his achievement by interviewing someone else? What if I walked up to the guy and thought about interviewing him, but didn't bother? Would Leenock still have suffered the same terrible injustice of having one interview less, or would it be okay, as long as that other interview did not exist?
The same goes for forum threads. If I create a forum thread for my "Birth of a progamer interview", putting real effort into it making it a proper OP, would it be an injustice to Leenock? Should I instead have created a forum thread for Leenock? How would the injustice have been scaled if I thought about creating a forum thread and didn't? Would that have been okay, or would I still have mistreated Leenock, because I actually thought about it?
Moreover, what's the correct ratio of spotlight a player should receive and who should police the media so that everyone gets what they deserve? I'm sure there are GM's out there who haven't gotten any media attention, but for example idra has gotten lots. Should idra be banned from getting more attention until everyone else with the same skill has gotten the same amount of attention, in the name of justice? And what is the minimum threshold required to be interviewed and what's the correct ratio? Is it 1 interview at Master level for every 10 interviews at GM? Perhaps 1 interview at Diamond for every 100 interview at GM? Has someone calculated the ratio of GM interviews to Diamond interviews? Perhaps Ailuj's is the 1 Master out of 100 GMs, so that it is, in fact, a legit interview. Or should all sub-Master interviews be banned altogether?
Please tell me why everything I wrote is not the way you really think, because it sure looks like that. Then explain to me how it's somehow bad that people put their energy into different things instead of everyone focusing on the one top thing all the time. I really don't see how the existence of an interview for a Diamond player somehow hurts the top players, so please explain that as well, especially taken into account that if the interviewer didn't interview Ailuj, she wouldn't have interviewed an unknown GM instead, so the end result would have been one interview less.
As for Ailuj and back to topic: Based on the interviews I really like her. She seems to have plenty of self-confidence, a serious attitude towards gaming and she chooses her words well when it comes to ... sensitive topics. She seems to have good potential for being a role model and inspiration for other girls to take the game more seriously. I hope she'll be able to improve and go to future MLG's and kick some ass.
I happen to have known julia through sc2 for a long time now and consider her a good friend of mine.
She didn't start streaming thinking "I want to be famous" or "I want a lot of viewers/fans to watch me." She streamed because she fucking wanted to, and had a good time interacting with her viewers, which at the time amounted to about 5-10 people on average.
She wants to get good at the game. She doesn't merely want to be something for you to look at, which I'm sure is obvious by now from her interviews. She went to MLG to play the game. She didn't ask to get put up against losira, and she didn't ask to be put on the main stage. She didn't ask for any attention whatsoever. Then one day she put a webcam on her stream. Deal with it. Like I only watch IdrA because he has been working out with EG house lately -.-
If you're not so great at the game and if she is getting more attention than you are and you are pissed off about that, go update your live journal or xanga about it. Everyone here who takes gaming seriously or actually understands why people go to events to compete sees right through you. You're throwing shit for absolutely no reason, and what is the result? Some one who is probably exhausted from all of this attention + interviews + competing comes home and sees a bunch of people on the internet don't really like her, and for no rational reason. That's all you've accomplished
This recurring discussion about female players and tournaments needs to be banned form TL. I don't understand what's wrong with you people, we've already heard all the arguments before, there is no need whatsoever for them to be brought up EVERY SINGLE TIME a thread that is even slightly related to a girl who plays SC2 pops up.
There is NOTHING new you can say that hasn't been said and heard before on the topic - many times.
It's just outright hostility now rather than an argument, no matter how nicely you phrase it. Seriously just lay off for the sake of decency.
Basicly what a bunch of other people already said. It's not like females getting interviewed is taking publicity away from guys, it's just adding to the interviews that are already out there. And if you're one of the people arguing "but she doesn't deserve to be interviewed there are much better players out there." So what? There are plenty of guys getting interviewed too. By that logic huk/idra are basicly the only foreigners that deserve to be interviewed, and all non code S koreans shouldn't be interviewed, right? Since there are moe deserving people out there. Hell, by that logic MVP MC and Nestea are the only ones who should ever be interviewed. Really, just stop with the hate.
My only gripe here with julua and alej is they never come on mine/ngrys vent anymore, those jerks!
holy crap what is with this crap of her getting undeserved attention? It is because of a***holes like some of the guys on this thread that girls and women are too intimidated or afraid to dedicate themselves to video games, computer games, or IT in general. You have to recognize that inclusion such as by promoting females, particularly when competing with their male counterparts is essential to creating the equality that would allow girls and women to gain the same skill and success as guys in a currently predominantly male field. How is that not perfectly clear? I mean people saying that we should not support women in e-sports as done by this thread and interview are like those morons saying that minorities should get over racism and toughen up, or try to "fit in" rather than ask society to mold themselves in order to accept, accommodate, include. Grow up TL (no not all of you. But you know who you are).

Edit: Typo
Get over yourself bud. Your teammate wasn't harmed by the girl's game on the main stage. Nor was any other aspiring male semi-pro. If you're involved in a semi-pro team you should have learned by now that esports marketing isn't about divvying out attention based solely on skill. Nor should it be.
Glad to see there are many voices in this thread drowning out the ones claiming sexism against male gamers (lol).

Lotsa good questions, and props for posting the times for easy reference!
I'm very happy she is being given spotlight for playing SC2 competitively. I think it helps foster the growth in female gaming in general, as well as within SC2. Seeing her improve would be cool too.

Players breakthrough into the championship bracket/pool play all the time (Trimaster last MLG?), but girl SC2 gamers are far rarer. It may not be 'fair', but when MLG is in the business of putting out content that people want to watch they will put an interview out of Diamond level girl. However, the insinuations that the only reason people are watching her is because she is hot (she's ok - my gf is cuter) is completely off base. There's a quadriplegic who plays SC2. People are interested in that. If a 6 year old boy started playing SC2 at MLG, people would be interested in that. And MLG would produce content that shows people more about these particular unique gamers.
However some random pro that took out Sheth? Yeah, good for him. But that doesn't make him interesting, and when incredible results do not fill the content requirements that MLG wants, personality and background reigh supreme. Like seriously, you expect me to care about a random NA pro? I'd rather hear what it's like for a girl trying to be a gamer.
I don't understand the negative reactions to outreach efforts to expand e-sports to a new demographic. I enjoyed seeing what top female players could do in the Zowie cup, and I want to see more girls playing seriously.
Best of luck, ailuj! Keep looking back to the basics and to your mechanics in your pursuit of master's league and beyond!
It could be I am out of the loop, but I have heard more of flo then ailuj. While awesome that ailuj got some main stage Losira action, isn't flo a bit more of "name" to use as a female foreign pro? No disrespect to ailuj though, she definitely note worthy and I hope to see more gamers who are also not afraid to be noted as female, as well as less stupid 15 year old comments.
Please get over it. So what if she made the main stage because she is a girl. Why does scientist, engineers and researchers not make front page but celebrities do? Some people need to work harder to get the attention they deserve, same for life same for Esports. Instead of criticizing, why not ask what you can do to be interviewed. I don't get all the pointless flaming. If someone gets the pie, we should be happy.
And face the hard truth, I rather watch this interview then another random GM player who is basically going to say the same thing as another random GM.
anyway i know my 2 posts came off as negative but no im glad she's getting the attention i just find very shitty and shady that esfi and csn (seltzer's interview on reddit) go for her because they know it's an easy pick and forget people like vile illusion or vile state. even mlg itself doesn't give enough support/exposure to semi pros who pay out of pocket or have very low budget who go far in the open bracket and it's something that people easily overlook.

I agree that they might deserve some spotlight. But posting here does not really help. Maybe you can do your own interview or find ways to direct attention to them positively? Every effort counts? Honestly is hard to justify who deserve to be interviewed more. Rather then focusing on an endless looping argument, I will say is better to get down and do something yourself.

I'm a player and my job is to compete, not do interviews. The best thing I can do is to be vocal about the issues that most people overlook.

That is the media for you, sir. Vile is quite an underrated team in my opinion, since they have performed quite well over the past few MLGs. Go vile

This is true. Really, the issue everyone should focus on is not that she is getting attention, it's that Illusion is not getting enough. Hell, the last 4 people to finish rank 24 at MLGs are Kiwikaki, Moonan, WhiteRa, and Vibe. That's good company. He played really well, and it would nice to see him get an interview.
Edit: Losira is cuter. Dude passed me in the crowd and I was like "who's the cute asian dude...is that losira? Wow."
Having stories/interviews on semi-pro players that make it far in the Open Bracket and interviewing Julia aren't exactly mutually exclusive things. Julia was likely interviewed because the people that cover eSports could make an interesting story out of it and she is very personable.
On November 23 2011 03:13 VirgilSC2 wrote: [quote] Actually, I don't see HOW it's been proven that girls can't compete at the same level as guys.
He never said women can't dedicate themselves to gaming, just that they aren't. This doesn't mean they can not do it.
Thanks for the correction, doesn't make any difference.
It actually makes a world of difference. If I CAN'T do something, for instance, playing Soccer professionally because I have an injury in my leg (a true fact by the way), compared to NOT doing something even though it's possible, like dedicating myself full time to Starcraft, it's a choice compared to a physical barrier.
Doesn't change the fact girls never played esports on the same level as the guys at the top so there's no point in whining about the best females players getting spotlight. People are crying over an interview and the fact they decided to put on MLG stage a match of losira vs ailuj. This is so ridicolous it doesn't make sense.
We don't need the status quo to be seen as "I have to be pretty to be a successful female gamer",
It's not sexism against male gamers that bothers me. It's the sexism TOWARDS attractve female gamers. Your post clearly shows you didn't even understand the majority of what I was trying to convey with my post. What I think was harmed was the female esports scene as a whole.
Why do these threads always turn into this just because a girl does something. Do some of you guys really not want more girl gamers? That's all there is to it o.o; It took me 20 years to get my mother to play games, now she can't believe I've been hogging them from her :/, not only this, at least she competed in the open bracket of one of the hardest open brackets that has been out there to date.
Freakin A, this isn't about white knighting or black knighting, try to keep some personal feelings aside, and understand that more girl gamers = more girl friends that play video games = more things you can do with your gf's.
i wonder if the internet will ever get over if someone is a girl or not. (that was directed to both the haters and the white knights)
Personaly I'm getting tired of so many people on the main stage being men. I don't mind womens only league, mens only, or both combined, but IMO I think there needs to be more focus on a lot of things that are currently ignored in sc2 (another example being 2v2) in order to give competitive gaming some variety. I don't see how most girls would take internet gaming seriously though when comments from both sides just make everyone seem either rude or completely fake ._>

Thumbs up on this. More people getting involve means more recognition. Honestly if I am playing well and not get a interview because of her, I won't even care.
Breaking news: Attractive young females treated better and given more attention than most other human beings. More at 11.
I kinda don't mind it though. Is anyone really worse off by her getting interviewed/spotlighted? No, and any promotion of sc2 that attempts to shake the image of basement dwelling neckbeard nerd is still good. Her being interviewed really doesn't come at anyone's expense so w/e.

Anyway,
Can't we have a thread where people don't have to act "omg im so smart so many things wrong with this thread"?
Girl had fun at MLG, loves the game we love, happens to be fairly attractive (not my type though). Deal with it.
I think she handled herself well and congratulations to her for getting to play on the main stage.
However, I feel that putting any gamer on the main stage, who does not possess the skill to be showcased on the main stage is a mistake - regardless of gender. In this case in particular - I feel that showcasing a low level player as something special - i.e. 'The first female ever!' is somewhat of a mockery of what that honorable position could be. If they wanted to showcase a female gamer - there are high level females who have earned it more, via being of the appropriate skill level.
More exposure to a hobby I love, intelligent and well spoken person being interviewed, wrecking some preconceived ideas about gamers and especially competitive minded ones. Hmm whats not to like? Cheers!

=x
She wasn't put on the main stage... she was on the main stage because of Losira.. her opponent. Everyone at that stage in the tournament was playing relatively low level players. While I would say the female that played Jinro gave some pretty good games, I believe it was flo but i'm not sure.
I do agree that MLG probably had someone say "hey we could put so and so on the main stage for first match but Losira is playing this hot chick... "
Does some random diamond player deserve all of this attention? Nope. Is this how every community, for the most part, responds to something new and different? Pretty much. This is a male domintated arena at the moment, so are female's going to get preferential treatment? Yes. Lets just move along and learn to deal with it.

And this woman got no prize money, because she didn't have the skill to compete.
Your problem here?
Are people not in the top 8 excluded from interviews now? Are they not relevant at all?
im pretty sure most gamers in a strange way WANT super ugly girl gamers and are getting annoyed that every girl gamer is hot
i would much rather see a interview with a girl gamer and her be 60 years old and ugly. that way at least i could say "ahhh good see we dont just care about hotness in girl gamers. we just wanna see gamers and the reason these girl gamers are getting attention is because they are girls. and sure if they were guys of the same skill they wouldnt be getting attention but it doesnt matter because gender differences do exist and if the sport was 99% female, and 1% male, then the first few male progamers would also get spotlight like this even if their skill wasnt up to par. its not about a double standard, its simply a fact that men and women are different (however slightly it may be) and if one is a huge majority and another is a small minority, obviously some people will be interested in seeing some spotlight on some in the minority even if their skill in that minority isnt top level"
but with all these girl gamers being hot, all i end up saying it "GOD DAMMIT why is every gamer chick being interviewed super hot? what TEH FFFFFFFF???? ugh its like the interviewer is just trying to gain popularity by throwing a hot chick in our face. why cant you go find some ugly gamer girls dangit i care about starcraft not boobs!!!! "

The community has the right to interview anyone they want to. Why does it need to have anything to do with skill? If people don't consider the interview worthwhile it won't be watched. But here we are now at 13 pages so this interview is obviously interesting enough for us.
Despite what some may think, when we approached Julia we did so because she had all the same characteristics as all the other players we look at picking up..male or female. We couldn't be more happy with how she performed and how the community sites have supported her. It's not our aim to become a white knight for females in gaming, they were around way before CheckSix decided to support one. We just know that Julia is a very interesting, dedicated and worthwhile player that deserves support..and there are MANY more out there just like her that could use this type of attention as well.
Thanks again to all the media and fans again for all the kind words this past weekend.

I like how more women are becoming invovled in e-sports, particularly starcraft 2. Zowie Divina featured female gamers who played at a master level which is impressive. DaSakura has beaten TT1, and Drewbie on the ladder; IMPRESSIVE.
The reason I believe people are upset, is because it's the case of a diamond level player being picked up by a professional team when there is countless numbers of master level players who obviously are just as "dedicated and worthwhile that deserve support" as well. The reason everyone goes gets excited, is the recent uprising of female players in the starcraft 2 scene. I believe if you had a least signed a master level player people wouldn't be so edgy.

Why not ask Flo or DaSakura to sign??
Maybe we tried to talk to them/sign them?
We didn't. But most have not actually bothered to ask, just immediately jump to the worst conclusions. Once again, our answer is we were not actively seeking JUST a female Starcraft player. We took a look at Julia because she was good friends with a few of our members, we saw the exposure for her, watched her play for a few weeks and decided it was the right thing to do. It wasn't like we sat down, decided to get a female Starcraft player, did research and decided on Julia. Julia was and is the right player for us, and we are happy with the decision. Others might not, but we believe in her dedication.
key, the reason why so many people are upset is because in reality, she's just another na diamond player. did you really sponsor her because she is dedicated? think of all the gm players that are dedicated and practice just as hard. or even MASTERS players.
I think females in e-sports need to stop being so babied. there's nothing stopping us from being as good as the boys, so why are our standards so low? is there any male diamonds being sponsored for their dedication? if there is, holy shit, my post just got shat on and I have nothing to argue about!
I'm in now way denying her dedication, obviously flying to MLG to be apart of a starcraft event when you live in Vancouver (where I live as well) is no small feat. Do not portray me as a someone on the offensive, judging Checksix based on your newly acquired team mate. I am merely an observer. I know some would hate the news regardless because they see a pretty face who managed to join a pro team when they've spent so much of their time trying to do the same. How many people dream of being a stacraft 2 professional player? Especially now that so many events have unfolded in comparison to brood war. More and more women are becoming signed players. I attempted to justify a reason as to why so many people aren't so happy about these recent changes, rather than typing "HATERS GONNA HATE"

That is not the reality of how this community works. When a team picks up a player, we do not just look at their skill..or their placement in a league. No one does. Everyone looks at various criteria. Marketability, stability, dedication, exposure and also play. You think Quantic picked up Destiny purely because of his play? Not likely. Or EG is keeping InControl because his amazing performances as of late? No. All of which are good players, but that is not the sole..sometimes not even the main purpose for them being on a their teams.
So, if a diamond player shows the kind of dedication, stream numbers, marketability and exposure that Julia does we will be more than happy to consider him/her for the team..and I am sure many others would as well.

I understand; and in no way was jumping on your case. However, I think people that bring up these points deserve to hear an explanation maybe to better understand our position and how things in actuality work.

If she sticks with it, she definitely has a bright future, and i loved the interview
I think people are getting way to caught up in Losira's cuteness here. Need to calm down and actually look at the skill of the matches, goddamn. Games can't be won on looks alone people.

You should stop putting words in my mouth. I'm not saying anything about people's right, I'm simply saying that in my opinion it's ludicrous that a woman is being interviewed only because she's a woman. Any women could have shown up, why is this woman so special?
It's great there are women competitors, but shouldn't she garner attention based on her skills competing, as opposed to the fact that shes a women or attractive?
Why the hell there is a thread and a interview about her ? She's not good at all and she didn't do anything special in the games vs loisira, I don't see why would you give any attention to a diamond player. I wish I was a girl so I could make money out of stupid geeks cheering for girls playing starcraft even if she can't play. Btw, nice marketing for checksix... like they care about her skills lol.

No it's not sexist, anymore than youth clubs are ageist. Sexism is saying "women are incapable of competing with men". Having a women's league does not say that.
Yes, in a vacuum, there should be no advantage for males in an RTS. But men and women do not start on equal ground in the esports world. Women are ostracized and harassed and accused of using their gender/sexuality to get ahead.
Until every single post about a woman in gaming does not include dozens of creepers telling them how they'd like to fuck them (or calling them ugly), we need a place where female gamers can build a community. Until every creeper gets permabanned from TL and downvoted to oblivion on Reddit, we will need those environments.
Suggesting that women want their own league because they can't compete with men is just ignorant, and borderline insulting.

I think it is awesome there are girls getting press. More power to them. They are under represented in gaming, and anything that helps fix that imbalance is good.

Or EG is keeping InControl because his amazing performances as of late? No. All of which are good players, but that is not the sole..sometimes not even the main purpose for them being on a their teams.
So, if a diamond player shows the kind of dedication, stream numbers, marketability and exposure that Julia does we will be more than happy to consider him/her for the team..and I am sure many others would as well.
and thats exactly the point of where i hate the direction esports is going. casters, personalities make a much more stable living then the players that try hard and just dont have that extra umph for marketing to actually get what they need to succeed.
though i understand why they are needed, but im completely lost on how to obtain these. as they cant be achieved with dedication or trying to be a nice guy.
take me for example, my big goal is to eventually get on a big team, get practice partners and eventually do something, however i will never do that without a stable practice environment. all i have is dedication, i dont have marketability or stream numbers as i cant get that following to grow, without some special quality. dedication is all i have. meaning dedication only places me in awkward situations where i get partial success in online events, finishing like top 12 in two ttesports challenges etc. Just enough to go "hey, im here,im competing at a fairly high level but not getting anything out of it"... Dedication of practicing 8 to 10 hours a day will only take me so far, especially when its a waste of practice time mostly laddering and becoming frustrated with the lack of success i get, and the lack of stability my life has, which in turn hurts my play drastically. depressed say hello to a 15 game losing streak and poor results.
and in this community there is very little hope for someone outside of all the loops to actually succeed with dedication alone. It just seems most of those qualities are completely luck based on happening to be found and getting that jump start.
nothing against julia she is a nice person, ive just been so meh personally lately i felt like writing an epic post to help get somethings off my mind personally after reading yours.

whats wrong with a team picking a player based on any arbitrary factor they choose? absolutely nothing. their team, their money, their sponsors. they can do whatever they want.

This makes me laugh so hard, mostly because AlexCMoi is actually right, he's been to more than one MLG's, had some decent performances, and he's on a 3rd rate team, INF if i remember correctly, now i'm all for women in E-Sports, but lets be honest they have to be good, I doubt it's that hard to find a relatively attractive "marketable" girl for a team to pick up who is high masters at least.
Until i started randoming I was a 400 point masters protoss on the NA ladder(ie nothing special at all), Yes i certainly don't have the dedication to the game she may have, but in some respects that's worse. I'm part way through the interview because i'm curious, but when there is a girl that i'm confident I could beat in a bo 5 or bo7 or bo9 or whatever, I don't think skill is the primary factor, and the way to make women be respected in this community is not by picking them up because they are "marketable"
I just think that unless she becomes amazing, and who knows maybe she will, if not though, i think checksix is doing a disservice to the game and the overarching concept of E-Sports and women in E-Sports
This isn't a knock on Julia, I'm sure she's a great person but diamond... come on x6
I've watched her stream before and she's pretty funny and chilled out, the guys on there are a laugh. I think this is great for check6, it adds a social aspect to their representation, which is good for teams, like EG with SOTG and incontrol being a community figure. I think all the teams need people there who will connect with the community and I can see Julia doing this for x6

I just copy pasted my post from reddit. Too many players had breakthrough at MLG and they get no exposure. Players like vile state or vile illusion had no interviews and they got really far in the chapiomship bracket.

Great that girls/julia are getting exposure...but like many I am wondering...where are the vile illusion interviews huh? It's fine to promote girl gaming, but when you see a random diamond gamer getting all of this attention solely because she is a girl (which is basically what this is) you have to wonder...
Basically, if julia were a random guy diamond do you think she would be getting all this attention? Nope.
I'm all for girl SC2 gamers, but how about jumping on the interview/media bandwagon when you get a very successful masters/GM girl that does something worthy of getting all this attention or competes in some huge event (like the divina tournament thing), not just doing it because the girl happens to obviously be beautiful...which is basically the only reason julia is getting all this attention...
so yeah...WHERE ARE THE VILE ILLUSION INTERVIEWS HUH? I'm just echoing desrow on this, as well as others i'm sure. There are a lot of huge fucking open bracket heroes and others that are way more deserving of interviews/all of this attention...

Can't be happy for the girl while being sad for Illusion?
What about the girls that maybe saw Julia on the main stage and might be a bit more competitive than before? There are obviously a lot of girls that are better then Julia too but I think everyone wins. (even Illusion because everyone is defending his awesome open bracket wins which would be nice to watch right now)
Feel bad for Illusion (maybe someone WILL interview the guy) but for Julia I still say it was an awesome experience and she got to talk about it.

remarkably I agree with avilo, where are the illusion interviews, where are the artist interviews, where are the state interviews, had no idea who all three of them were, and they were all impressive with how far they got
Made an account to post this, and I'm sorry if this sounds rude, but I have to get my opinion out. All this is telling me to do to succeed as a girl gamer in e-sports is put a tank top on, get a webcam, find some pro friends and stream.
It doesn't matter what league I am or how skilled I am as long as I get all the boy's attention. Again I mean no offense to julia, but she doesn't exactly have a day9 personality. I've seen her stream, and she's actually pretty boring. The only excitement comes from one of her friends talking about sex and julia giggling about it. She's not funny. She's not clever. She's not original. She's a girl streaming in a tank top. There's plenty of them on league already if you all are so desperate for them. Ffs, on halloween a viewer asked julia to stand up and show her skirt and she did. Seriously? How are girl gamers supposed to be taken seriously as a gamer when they do things like this? And no, before you start arguing about the skirt, I can promise you, she didn't stand up so the viewers could enjoy the skirt's fine design.
Her being on the main stage is a joke and makes me shy away from e sports. People are trying to make SC2 a main stream thing. Being shown on espn but if things like this continue i don't think that'll ever happen. Maybe the lakers will accept me if I can give them enough publicity!
Oh, and her dedication? She has 14 games played this season. Please.

Michelle Wie got so much attention just because she was female even though there are a lot of way more accomplished male golfers that get less attention. it's just how it is

Julia is getting this attention for a reason. She's a female gamer, so yes, that is obviously the biggest point in her favour, I do agree with that. However, this is only because there's currently a huge lack of recognition for female gamers in the eSports industry overall. These organisations want to promote and encourage more female gamers to compete in their tournaments and to participate with the community in general. Releasing some video interviews and putting her on the main stage (when there was no other "pro" players even available to play) is an extremely simple thing to do which takes little effort or prior organisation and yields and extremely positive outcome (so I don't see the big deal about that).
Second reason, she is a very likeable person that is mature and can talk in front of a camera confidently without acting immature/rude or just plain weird (read: Naniwa). In my opinion it's an easy decision for the various media outlets who attend these events to interview someone like Julia. Everybody wins; her, her team, and the media personalities interviewing her. I think you see what I am getting at here... they get a great interview out of her/her story.
vileIllusion did great at this one tournament. Unfortunately it's just a fact that this scene is currently dominated by male players and if you want to get the attention of everyone, you better do something absolutely remarkable to stand out from the rest. Nobody is saying what vileIllusion did in the open-bracket wasn't great, because it was. Just look at the likes of Haypro though, in my opinion he did even more to warrant a barrage of interviews and media coverage of his performance that weekend but yet, nothing (now go look at his previous track record of being interviewed, kennigit even admitted on sotg it's not great).
That's all I am going to contribute to this topic. I feel that there's way too much negativity and even sexism in some cases eminating from our community just because they personally don't give a shit about female gaming and are being completely and utterly biased toward particular players or teams.
Promoting female gaming is great, but sponsor females because of their SKILL. If they have such a great "personality", make them a caster or an interviewer...

It's hard being a female gamer. I constantley get trashed on from other players and it kind of sucks. I have been only playing since last season and that's why I don't do 1v1s anyone because I didn't know they reset and I was ultra sad. I mainly do custom 1v1s and so on.

On the other hand, I can imagine if an attractive guy was really good at some kind of (solo) dancing, and joined a huge class with 99% women in it, he'd probably get just as much fawning + nagging along the lines of "he's just here to get the attention". So yeah. Not that suprising.

No offense intended. I'm just stating what's obvious to me- 5 Posts, very attractive picture (I can understand it's supposed to be proof), nickname "beauty" and last but definetly not least, 34b on the sign- I assume that's your cupsize??? Why bother with all that just to get games?
Again, no offense to you, but you surely see why it would smell fishy (no pun intended, hah).

First of all I am 17 so talking about my cupsize is out of line and I am offended. 2nd of all I joined this site because people from the channels I hang out in are on it. Clan XN, Clan BZK, and z33k. Third of all, this below. clearly my cupsize, again.

So Beauty.346 how did you get into SC2? I tried a few times to get my girlfriend to play it but she doesn't care for it. Maybe I'm taking the wrong approach. We used to play WC3 UMS together a lot, tower defense and that sort of stuff, so she has some idea about how to use a similar interface and isn't entirely uncomfortable with it. Mostly I want her to understand the mechanics better so that maybe she won't give me such a hard time for watching SC2 tournaments since she would be able to understand it better.

I am pretty much a chill and cool girl willing to try new things. My friends who I party with introduced me to Halo and other games then one of my super good friends (who is super bad at this game but I love him) introduced me to SC2. It was pretty easy to learn even though I still call zerg the 'bug' race.

How quickly did you get to Masters, and what RTS background did you have? Do you have to play more than casually to get to Masters? Ever participate in any female tournaments? Considering how few girls are playing at the Masters level, you might make some easy money lol.

I only play casually and I've been stuck in Platinum for a while. I would practice more, but almost any time I intend to play, I visit TeamLiquid first and see an interesting tournament in the calender side bar and just watch instead.
You're going to call bullshit but I got masters my first 5 games doing 1's, I did not loose a single one during my 5's or I may of lost one. If you are for real, you have talent, and would probably be competitive at the higher levels with dedicated practice and coaching. Of course that life isn't for everyone, but it makes me wonder how many people are out there with this kind of untapped potential.

Haha thanks I guess, I play on a laptop a MacBook Pro with a touch mouse pad tab. I was just informed that it is easier to play with a mouse so I am about to go get one and see how that goes. I mean I still do have a lot to learn but I think I am doing pretty good so far.
There are very talented players every single MLG that get no exposure even after beating well known professionals. The ones that take the opportunity to bitch about it are the ones that are playing for the wrong reasons and probably won't ever make a splash. If you are really that bothered by someone elses good fortune / luck then you need to take a step back and figure out why you are so mad at someone you have never even met and know nothing about.
I could point out at least 2-3 very good no-names every MLG that destroyed the open bracket but fell just short of a championship breakout but got no press at all. Do I go into other peoples interview threads and trash them because I feel they don't deserve it over player X Y Z? No, because it's pointless bickering and just plain sad.

Top 2% of SC2 ladder players is nothing special, gotcha. Gotta love the elitism. Come on mate, pretty much everyone mentions their league when they introduce themselves.

yeah masters are a super tiny % of each region (i think between 2 and 5) but if you read TL or any live reports everyone states to be master lol i wish TL added a feature that shows your B.net profile in your signature or something. trust me we would have -90% of people being cocky or arrogant because i am sure only between 5 and 10% of those stating who are in masters, actually are... and you can tell from the amount of giant bullshit that they post in the live reports

Masters is good, there is a lot more room to grow above that of course, but getting to Masters so quickly indicates potential
top 2% without even being trained? that's really something. I've played hundreds of games and still haven't gotten past Platinum except for a short stint in Diamond.

I hate to be the person to give you the bad news...but....
Look at the divisions: Half of them are empty/inactive. In my Diamond division only the top 20 had more than ~50 wins and iirc only the top 5 over 100... This was a few days before the end of last season (i stopped playing "often" around decembre last year, since than i might have ~5 games a month, most probably less). Thats why i think AND it is easy to get Masters when you put in some effort. While masters might only be the top ~5% of all the players, it's also only like 5% of all the players actually putting some effort into this game. The rest is casually playing a few games when they feel like it. whiteout thinking about "Builds" or whatever else you guys think is required to get out of Gold (rofl)
Btw: On TL there is bound to be a pretty high density of Masters-Players.. Or at least Diamond... Why? Peopel that go here actually care about the game.. The Guys i know that are in Bronze - Gold are people that really don't give shit and just play some guys for the pure fun of it whiteout really thinking about anything they do.
You're pretty wrong. I have many friends who frequent TL and have a lot of games and are hovering around Platinum. Not everyone has the APM and multitasking to handle Masters.

On the off chance that you're actually who you say you are, I'd like to give you a couple of pointers:
TL.net is pretty strict on their forum moderation, and this seems to be derailing the thread. However, the Blogs section (look way down on the left coloumn) would be good place for a "This is me - let's play" post. Just edit in the link to your blog into some of your existing posts after you've made your blog and people will get from this thread to the new one.
If you're really a female Master player with lots of talent, you have some cool opportunities. Recently there was the Zowie Divina tournament in China for girls only. The participants were flown there from all of the world and the winners of the 5000$ and 3000$ prizes were no more than Master players themselves, if I remember correctly.
Every now and then, there's a female only tournament called Iron Lady which is a great chance for girls to make a name for themselves. One of the competitors for Zowie Divina was chosen mainly for her participation in that.
Finally, there's a group for girls called Girls of Starcraft, if you need someone to play with who won't trash you. They're also good at informing people when female tournaments etc. is going on.
And then, of course, there are all the normal (i.e. mixed gender) tournaments. We're still waiting for the first girl to even qualify for MLG or win a weekly tournament, so take a look at Portal:Leagues for an overview of what's going on. If you're really good, you may make SC2 history by being the first girl to win one.

Wait wtf? No mouse? How do you make masters right away with no mouse/prior RTS experience....(I'm just assumeing you have none or you would know you need a mouse...)
I use a macbook pro so I use the square pad in the middle...It's not that hard. You just tap them and stuff....I've been using laptops forever with mouse pads so it's really not an issue with me. But I am going to post in the blog section so I don't derail this thread anymore and get in trouble.

if you were even a casual player in Command and Conquer, Wc3, or even BW making masters is extremely easy. To say a mid masters could ever compete with a top tier pro grandmaster player will never happen.

I only play casually and I've been stuck in Platinum for a while. I would practice more, but almost any time I intend to play, I visit TeamLiquid first and see an interesting tournament in the calender side bar and just watch instead.
You're going to call bullshit but I got masters my first 5 games doing 1's, I did not loose a single one during my 5's or I may of lost one. I did team 2's 3's and 4's before I tried ones with my friend and his friends that were in his clan at the time. just So I could get more of a feel for the game. I made it to masters last season and that was my first season. My playtime is off and on I am hardley on during weekends and I am still in Highschool school so I more so play at night on weekends. I don't know what RTS means what is that? I did some tourneys like in clan ones but I am not here to make money to be honest I am just here to put guys in there place :-p.
Wow.
If you are for real, you have talent, and would probably be competitive at the higher levels with dedicated practice and coaching. Of course that life isn't for everyone, but it makes me wonder how many people are out there with this kind of untapped potential.

people who claim that the top 2% of a population are to be considered the average should go play some games instead of reasoning and argumenting, please stick to what you're (perhaps) good at.
OT: Nice to see the female "scene" is getting some coverage and interest lately, sparks some hope that esports might become more interesting to a wider audience eventually.
On November 25 2011 18:00 Velr wrote: Why do i think it's easy to go Masters?
So you're not even in Masters?
While it's true that it's just the beginning of the real learning, it's still a solid achievement.
No, i'm not (I got put in Diamond after release, was mid diamond with 1xxx Bonuspool until I basically stopped playing.. Which was 11 months ago, there was no master-league then, and now I'm sitting still in diamond). Becoming masters may be a "solid" achievement but judging from my flist: Everyone that was any decent (which means not downright horrible) was Diamond and is now Masters OR stopped playing/plays as much as me (then they are Platin or Diamond). The worst that "happened" to some, that really did not play for like half a year or more, was dropping down to Plat.
Therefore I really just can't imagine that anyone that takes this game any serious(!!!!!) is still Platin or lower... My experience just tells me that everyone, no matter his RTS experience, that put in a little bit of effort AND is still active is Diamond or higher.
But yes, your right, becoming Masters is an achievement if you started at absolute 0. But for most people with "serious" RTS experience it should just be "the expected" and nit does ot mean that your good or anything (but my senses might be warped due to a long time ago(!) being pretty decent at SC/BW and WC3c(top 100 northend-ladder))... All it means is, that you are now actually playing against people that are also actually playing the game and aren't just messing around.
About the Masters = Top 2% of the whole ladder. True... But think about this number and look at the divisions. 80% (or just a HUGE part) of the players are nearly inactive. So the Top 2% quickly become like the Top 20% of people actually playing enough to get their bonuspool down .
No offense intended. I'm just stating what's obvious to me- 5 Posts, very attractive picture (I can understand it's supposed to be proof), nickname "beauty" and last but definetly not least, 34b on the sign- I assume that's your cupsize??? Why bother with all that just to get games?

Not saying it's trolling/not trolling I don't really care either way, but I can tell you that my step-father beat my in Unreal Tournament with touch pad some years ago, he was insanely good at one point though with mouse/keyboard, but that was an FPS. Just saying that some people can actually learn to use the touch pad pretty well.
That puts a different twist on it I guess... I just have a really hard time believe the story with all those elements together. And just randomly she's hot as hell. Just to much for me. How did this person get all the perfect DNA?
First of all I am 17 so talking about my cupsize is out of line and I am offended. 2nd of all I joined this site because people from the channels I hang out in are on it. Clan XN, Clan BZK, and z33k. Third of all, this below. clearly my cupsize, again.
My bad, I apologize. Obviously I misread the sign, so no reason to be offended (also there's nothing wrong with your cupsize, chill out ). Like I said, there never was any insult intended, I just stated how your post seemed to me. Since my perception of your post has nothing to do with yourself as a person (or my perception of yourself as a person for that matter- like I could tell from a single post) why be offended. If your story is true it's all good and you've come to the right place. <3

Beauty just the fact that you are defining yourself as a girl playing a game and not someone playing a game makes me lose all hope for women in eSports. Can't you just be someone with similar interests as us and not a girl with similar interests than us? Sort of disappointing really. And the only reason I'm saying this is because you're obvy going out of your way to make your sex known.

It's extremely pathetic, but then again, it fits with the rest of this thread. Ultimately, until the stigma of gaming is abolished, as long a process as that is, we're going to see this sort of behavior from women and those who fawn over them, and those that go out of their way to terrorize anyone who deviates from the accepted norm within their subculture.

I played 2's 3's and 4's before I did 1's. I got placed into Diamond RANDOM with 3's and 4's. Then I did teams with 2's 3's and 4's and with my team I got to masters. I play on a macbook pro with a touch square mouse pad which I did use to get to my masters, it's not that hard to believe because I always use labtops and touch pads.
Well welcome to the real world where it's never a meritocracy and arbitrary variables that you can't control (in julia's case her sex and looks) come into play to such a significant extent that it can make or break your career.
