It was situational. It has been used plenty of times in the past, especially when PvP was more aggressive. It's an excellent building, it just had awkward mechanics in BW (such as units needing to stand still and not attack) but during a hydra bust, intense zealot war or even occasionally in PvT they serve a very unique and helpful purpose. If they're in the mood for new ideas, the shield battery is an excellent place to start. | ||

It wasn't often used, but it's the go-to building against certain rushes (mostly cheese) Proxy shield battery would be pretty strong with a forge expo -> void ray if Z goes for the fast 3rd base, which is a fairly standard response. | ||

Shield Batteries in Brood War with its old controls were so insanely hard to control properly. It would be a lot more popular in Starcraft 2 for sure! | ||
