I'd be 10/10 if it weren't for the technical problems.
|
I wish the first two days of play weren't next to useless =/ And reading scores on overlay was tough. Otherwise I don't have any complaints, really liked Painuser and HD's casting
|
10/10 on a relative scale because it was the best SC2 event ever, even though it should be 9/10 as there are obviously some things to improve. The most important for me would be changing the tournament formula to make pool play more important, probably to have some effect on seeding. Having a backup plan in case of ISP failure would be nice, but it probably means less money for prizes/invites/production, so I'd probably take a risk if I'd be responsible for organizing IPL4.
Other than that - amazing event. AMAZING.
BTW. First post, long time lurker.

I'm not a fan of Hd and Painuser casting the finals, but I get that they deserve it. Other than that and the 2 very long hours of LoL, as well as technical difficulties that are not IPL's fault it was a great tournament to watch thank you!

I found that the sound levels were really inconsistent. The volume difference between the casters, the girls on stage, the adverts, and the pre-recorded backstage interviews etc... were constantly changing. One minute I had to turn up my volume just to be able to listen to the interviews, next minute I am being deafened by "AND WELCOME BACK TO THE MAIN STAGE FOR THE ROUND OF X".
Apart from that and the lag issues (which happens to most tournaments at some point in time) the production was really well done.
p.s. next time, make sure you inspect the inside of Stephano's hair dress. Im sure he has some illegal voice com stuff in there! The guy was too good!
EDIT: Also I did not like the players choosing the colours pink and red in games. Especially in ZvZ it was really hard to distinguish whos units were whos, whos banelings went off etc...

I thoroughly enjoyed IPL3 finals, production was something i didnt even expect, the option to see first person view of both players etc. IPL suprised me a lot!
sure there were a few minor points to criticize but overall i was very impressed.
only thing that ticked me off was staying up till past 5AM and having to watch boring ass LoL and then when switching back to sc2 for the finals they had so many issues i missed the first couple games.
just stick to sc2 please!!
anyway great friggin show

Keep up the high production value please! It's nice to see the camera in the down-right corner skip between the players faces, hands and casters and actually MOVE and change angles. Also dealing with the players on stage seemed really professional, working with the translaters worked better than most MLG's and Anna did a great job hosting. Even without the "real big names" in the community like Tastosis or Day9 the tournament was extremely entertaining. If you could've done something better it would've been something like an overlay before the matches with a picture of the players and some statistics just like GSL has already. It keeps the viewer informed and also hypes quite a bit.
Thx for a great weekend of Starcraft 2 and keep on the high production value!

Voted 8/10 because in one really exciting game (can't remember which though it was a PvT [Hero vs. Puma I think]) they cut away from the game to show a player during the last deciding battle. Don't do that.

What I liked - the players - the cameras - djwheat and apollo - the production What I disliked - the colors in game seemed a bit off to me - obviously the delays - the whole groups made no sense to me - players didn't care about them so 2 days of the tournament had no meaning - not all of the games which I wanted to watch were streamed, for example Ret vs Demuslim wasn't streamed so they can stream haypro vs alive - how am I supposed to see the games that weren't streamed? ( replays? ) - the biggest disappointment to me: I was expecting to watch the player's first person view, not the observer switching to player cam. That discouraged me from buying prime. I'm seriously expecting them to stream player's computer for the next event. Comparing IPL to MLG I prefer MLG, because they release the replays.

Other than the occasional lag though, great tourney!
I agree, to me this was the most annoying element of the production that was a persistent thing.
I watched IPL3 on a combination of devices including my 17" laptop, my iPad2 and my 40" HDTV. The only time I could read the names and see the score was on my 40" and even then I had to strain to see them. The bright green background of the overly combined with white numbers made the names and score nigh impossible to see. On the iPad and my Laptop, I couldn't see them at all, even at 720p.
I also noticed that on more than a few matches on Thursday and Friday the races shown on the overlay were incorrect.
All-in-all it was a great event, just tweaks.

The good: Great group of players Great game quality Overall great camera work Good use of recorded interviews/clips during down time Limited downtime All around great production Nice recovery on day 2
The bad: Hard to read the scoreboard Ramming LoL down our throats Sound levels sometimes seemed off Camera occasionally switched away from action to shots of the casters Random explosions/camera transitions
Overall a great event that just needs a few details polished to be absolutely amazing. Well done IPL!

Taking aside the technical issues which where not in IPL's control, they screwed up with that "comedian guy" and really dropped the ball not playing both semifinals before showing Lol.
A European player who cannot be watch by other Europeans unless they stay up until 6 AM.

+ nice quality, sound, etc + not much waiting compared to other tournaments (+ couple of nice games, but that's not related to tournament anyway)
+- casters, they didn't annoy me, but they're not good either
- tournament "formula" or whatever you call it - LoL - obs often fucked up (dno if the casters were obs or some random guy?) - camera switching to random things during action ingame

I have one complaint:
why does the final have to be at 10 p.m. USA time? that's like 5 o'clock in the morning for us in Europe.
I expect the finals to be late, but not THAT late. I watched the NASL final match, it was like until 2 a.m. for me, no problem. But this is just ignoring european viewers altogether, which is not very nice.

Overall the event was very good, probably the best one this far both in terms of production and quality of games. I'm not going to bother listing the good things, the list would be too long I feel. If it isn't on the list of things I think could be done better you can pretty much consider it one of the many good things about the event :p
First of all the LoL intermission. I'm not a big fan of LoL, I'm not going to go into reasons since I'm sure they've all been brought up many times and this isn't the place to bring them up again. Even though I don't like it I understand why you had it. I can even understand why you put it on the main stream, even though I don't agree with and and think it wasn't a beneficial thing to do for anyone. I don't really have a problem with that. What I can't understand is why you put it between the two semi finals forcing one player to wait for hours to play the final and one to play back to back series. I don't know that it really affected the outcome of the finals, I don't think so, but it could have. And that would have been bad. Really bad. Do it before the semi finals or before the finals and it would all have been fine and dandy.
Second is the Randy Anderson guy. I don't know why he was there, what his purpose was but he was terrible. I'm sorry but I just don't feel he had anything to do at all at an event like IPL.
I also feel that the 21+ age limit might have harmed the event more than people anticipated. Sure the crows that was there was great but it didn't do the event justice not to have every seat packed with people sitting packed on top of each other to get in on the epicness. The even was good enough to deserve that kind of attendance.
Now we get into the small nitpicking. First was the scoreboard which was hard to read at times. I don't know who thought turquoise background with white text was a good idea, but I hope he chooses to go with something more conventional next time.
Second of the small things was the dresses of the hosts (no pun intended!). Don't get me wrong I absolutely don't mind having beautiful ladies hosting the event, especially not when they're people who are actually involved in the community and know both the game and the players to some extent. I think both Anna and Rachel were very deserving to be there and did a good job. Sure there was room for improvement, but I think neither has much experience in hosting events like this and considering that they did very good. I hope both are brought back. The dresses however seemed a bit out of place and overdone. Like someone said before I'm sure they would have looked great on a cocktail party, but for this occasion it just seemed a bit too much. Something more conservative would have been more fitting and, for a lack of a better word, professional.
But apart from these things I can't find much else to fault the IPL for, which is pretty astounding considering it was a four day event that even had some technical issues! Great job overall to everyone involved.

pressure blizzard to implement lan, that's my only concern. apart from that, the few days I followed the event (because of my schedule, not because I didn't like it) were nearly perfect.

This event was SO insanely well done! Everything about it, EVEN with the problems I enjoyed watching. Always having content to show us if it was downtime... The two thing I did NOT like was the crowd size at times(but this isnt really ipl's fault) and HD+Painuser! I know that we should stay mature and stuff but they actually reads the games and situations WRONG, not that I am right all the time, but compared to other caster. Like a regular bunker pressure vs zerg, the zerg can hold losing a couple of lings and they say he is behind when other casters would say he was ahead, even when losing more/making more lings instead of drones.. And ok, its their main casters, but for the finals, really? Im not exaggerating this, but HD and painusers games got ruined for me.. Specially the finals(watching vods right now) And I have seen around the interwebs that alot of people feel this way, so hopefully they have heard about it and atleast let the more populare duos commentate the biggest matches..
This i 8/10 for me for those reasons..
