Q. What is the StarCraft II Starter Edition?A. The StarCraft II Starter Edition is a new, free version of StarCraft II that gives anyone with a Battle.net account and an Internet connection a chance to try a wide array of single-player and multiplayer content in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. Unlike our past trial versions of StarCraft II, the Starter Edition does not have any time restrictions and offers a wider range of content to players. Q. What's included in the StarCraft II Starter Edition?A. The Starter Edition gives players access to the first three campaign missions on Mar Sara, and then gives the player the ability to choose a fourth mission -- either the first mission offered by Dr. Hanson or the first mission offered by Tychus Findlay in the campaign. Players will also get access to a pair of Challenge Missions, a selection of multiplayer maps, and a custom-game map. The multiplayer and custom game maps available may be cycled from time to time. In addition, Starter Edition players can earn achievements within the available content; can view profile, ladder, and achievements pages; and can access many functions of the map editor. Q. How do I get the StarCraft II Starter Edition?A. If you don't yet have a Battle.net account, head to www.trystarcraft.com to get started. The site will walk you through the process of creating a Battle.net account and downloading the game client. If you already have a Battle.net account, you can simply download the full game client and start playing as soon as it's downloaded! A StarCraft II: Starter Edition license will automatically be added to your Battle.net account once you log into the game. Q. What are the restrictions of StarCraft II: Starter Edition?A. Starter Edition players can only play up to the fourth campaign mission, and most Challenge Missions are unavailable. Starter Edition players are also unable to use versus and co-op matchmaking, most custom maps, chat channels, and the party system. Publishing custom maps to Battle.net is also restricted, and offline play is unavailable to Starter Edition players. For single-player and custom games, Starter Edition players may only choose the Terran race. Q. Which maps are available?A. Currently, Starter Edition players have access to Xel'Naga Caverns, Shattered Temple, Discord IV, and High Orbit. StarJeweled will also be made available soon to Starter Edition players. It is possible that different maps will be cycled in and out of the available map list for Starter Edition players from time to time. Q. How do I create a multiplayer match?A. Multiplayer matches are available through the custom game interface. Click Multiplayer at the top left, and then create or join a custom game. Available maps will be shown at the top of the list. Starter Edition players are restricted to Terran-only for custom games. Q. Can I play a match with other players who have the full game? Can I create a match with a friend?A. StarCraft II players with a full game license can join a custom game on the trial maps to play with Starter Edition players. Please note that the party system is unavailable to Starter Edition players, so matchmaking will be random and it will not be possible to select specific players to play a match with. Q. Can I watch replays using the Starter Edition?A. Yes! Starter Edition players can watch any replay. Q. Can I create and publish maps using the Starter Edition?A. Many map editor functions are available to Starter Edition players. However, the full version of the game is required to use the Test Map function and to publish maps to Battle.net.

Considering the current state of the gaming industry, it's surprising to see this kind of initiatives
|
That explains the astrix next to shattered and XNC. You know I like the idea of a multiplayer demo. That's pretty sweet. I hope I don't get drophacked in custom games now though
Gheed YOU SON OF A BITCH I"VE FOUND YOU. GIVE ME BACK MY GOLD THAT SHIELD WAS BULLSHIT><
Fucking Gheed.

I would call this an extended demo. I hope a lot of newcomers will be picking this up ^^
|
I think this has excellent potential to introducing new players to the game and sharing/explaining the game with friends/family.
Really good to see Blizz do this :D
|
I was wondering what those weird symbols were next to xelnaga and shattered in the custom games screen.... Thanks for clarification, this is a good move by Blizz imo!
|
may be put the term starter edition in the thread title as well would be benifical

So that's what that was. It's a smart move to try and draw new players in, but I can't help feel blizzard has better things to address than putting together a starters pack like this. Please give your existing customers some love before trying to hook more in. T_T

Starter Edition = DEMO, but with some multiplayer maps, 2 more missions in single and some custom maps.
SC2 Demo had 3 Mar'Sara missions and all skirmish battles TvT
|
So this is what blizzard have been spending their time on...I'm not sure if I agree with them constantly saying that theyre too busy to do stuff and then bring something like this out, which quite clearly was due a year ago.
Props to Blizzard regardless.
|
Yes a terran smurf account!
|
Guess its a good way to get even more people playing Terran... ugh
|
Thanks for spending so much time creating this for us, Blizzard!
Thanks for finally allowing access to any region, albeit in the form of a Starter Edition!
Thanks for allowing us to play any race... wait what? we can only play Terran?
Thanks Blizzard!

Apologize for playing that... oh wait, never mind.

This reminds me of the old SCBW Spawn versions. Pretty cool to help people get into the game with no investment cost.

ITT we have the best way for Korean Terrans and NA Terrans to play against each other on Bnet on custom games.

Not available protoss and zerg LOL
|
Blizzard recognizes that the most fun unit in the game, the Hellion, will attract many new players.
|
I ask simply from curiosity, but how has SC2 done so far in resisting hacked versions?

Same as WoW. Its the new Free2Play trend. Next will be Achievements/Portraits for $.

More proof that Blizzard is trying to push Starcraft 2 into an era of Terran dominance
|

I think, SC2:Hots - Started Edition will allow to play as Zergs only or both races.
But I think, there can be some hacks later, that will allow to play as Zerg/Protoss in this Started Edition.
|
I have a question. Does this mean that newbs are going to be playing on XNC, Shattered and some other customs against people who have had this game for a year randomly. Just let them play practice league if you actually want any rate of retention. They are going to get beat up and stop playing customs the first day.
|
wow why did i spend $60 on the full game

On the bright side...at least we can download multiple region clients.

I think this is pretty cool. I forwarded this link to a couple of buddies of mine that I have had trouble convincing to take the plunge. Good idea!

The bad thing with free multiplayer some maps, is...
cheating and hacking in custom melee games.
And also this starter edition can be hacked to get zergs/protoss as playable race. Or hacked for full campaign. Or for ladder games. Or for all melee maps.
|
Very cool, good idea by Blizzard.

A. Currently, Starter Edition players have access to Xel'Naga Caverns, Shattered Temple, Discord IV, and High Orbit. StarJeweled will also be made available soon to Starter Edition players. It can't be hacked for ladder games or all maps in multiplayer -- battle.net server will recognize that this account is starter edition and will not allow the game to start. As for full campaign -- well, there is already a pirated version with full campaign, don't be naive (of course no achievements, since they are tracked on battle.net server)
Concern about hacking in custom games is valid, of course (but custom games with random people suck anyway)

Well instead of a flood of cheaters on the ladder we'll have cheaters in custom games on certain maps. Just don't play on those maps when you're doing random custom games.

Awesome blizzard. I hope this attracts some more people.

Yeah well, as long as I agree with you that they have better things to address, but it's probably not that hard to do, and they have many different teams working on the game.. A team can be working on this "starters pack" while another team is working on multiplayer replays watching, and adding destructible rocks to season 4 maps.
Anyway I think it's a good idea, and it'll help me get some more nerds addicted to sc2

Soon SC2 will be F2P like HON and LoL. I can't wait. SC2 fanbase is WAY too small to compare to those games, and the barrier to entry for SC2 is WAY too high.

It's a nice step. But it would have been nicer to: - Give all three races. - Access to ladder. - Access to all maps.
Then disable Singleplayer. From there they can apply microtransactions to: - missions - decals - portraits - challenges
I think that works best.

It should be pretty obvious why they picked terran and not another race currently. If they did this during HotS the 1 playable race would be zerg. But since it's during the terran-themed part of the trilogy, it's terran. It's not about favorites.

Bullshit! The barrier are ~25-35€ and you get a great singleplayer campaign and the best Mulitplayer ever. I hope SC2 never goes Free2Play.

Well, watching any replay is kinda cool. But since CD-Keys are associated to Bnet accounts instead of installations not very useful to owners.

Anyway, quick question (I also posted in the official blog site):
Q. If I have this Starter Edition, can I load up credits through the prepaid service anytime so I can access the other stuff when I want?

I think that works best. This means everyone who bought the game gets thoroughly ripped off. I don't really care about missions/decals/portraits/challenges.
Also, it sounds like there isn't a friends system in the Starter Edition. All the new kids will probably just get hammered by random people who actually own the game. Will there be a way for people with the full version be able to play with their friends who own the Starter Edition (without simply randomly jumping on custom games and hoping for the best)?
|
You can play against anyone in custom games, including P and Z players...
This is a good thing, but I don't think it'll bring in all that many players. However, it completely opens the gate to hackers. People don't just cheat or hack for ladder points, contrary to popular belief.

I read through this whole thread looking for the answer, but it seems from the OP the answer is no. It says something to the effect of lacking a party system makes it unable to make arranged games, but it didn't specifically mention invites.
Edit- You can invite your friends with starters to customs! YESSSSSSSS!!!!

Good thing Blizz' did there; makes it easier to get some friends into SC2, thumbs up! [;
|
Hopefully this will get my friends into the game... finally.
Kind of annoying how most people who never played an RTS will simply toss the thought away and go back to their mindless FPS games :-/.
This will hopefully change the mood among most non-RTS gamers. Great move, Blizzard!

|
Even if it's randomly just entering custom games and trying to get matched up, isn't it relatively easy for the host to keep kicking people until you get your friend in the game?
|
Maybe my girlfriend will get into starcraft as well...here's to hoping. I got her into WoW, but that game is much more diverse in the things you can do.
|
So..... next step LAN edition? ^______^
Custom games only and no Blizzard maps?
|
Free replay viewer, awesome.
I hope one can invite a trial player to a custom game... it's really the only way I could see myself convincing someone to buy SC2.
|
lol, I'm so gonna download the HOTS starter edition, I play zerg anyway, I don't like the ladder and Xel'naga caverns is the most popular map on EU so I won't have a chance to play another map anyway, the campaign is really easy to crack... so, good job blizzard.

i highly doubt there will be starter edition for HotS and LotV. the starter version is supposed to simply be a teaser of what the real thing is, that way people will want to buy it. see it as a demo, so it's highly unlikely that they will release a demo of the expensions.
|
can you add players to friends list and message other players on the starter edition?
|
The only thing that bothers me is that people who will transition from the starter edition to the real game are probably going to want to stick with terran, saturating the player pool with more terrans than we already have.

It'll primarily be in the lower leagues in which that is already the case. Sadly, this will always be true since WoL is the Terran 1/3 of the game. With HotS the default race for the campaign as well as similar promotions will be Zerg which will likely promote more Zerg players. Hopefully in the end it'll all balance out as each race still has its own unique appeal.

Yes, you can add friends and invite to customs just like a regular account, but parties are disables. (Which is weird because i dont know what the purpose of parties is other then to set up games)
I dont think you can message though, i think they disabled the chat function.
|
Yay!! An easy way for people who don't own SC2, or do own it but don't have installed on any and every computer, to watch replays!
|
...Does this mean that after a year I can finally play the game? .... :D Fuck yeah!
|
i am downloading it just so i could watch the replays lol

Cool, now people can cast without even owning the game :D Gonna tell my friends about this

Protoss and Zerg not available? ROFL-

Only Terran available? Yet more evidence of calculated Terran bias at Blizzard HQ. It's real, and it's hurting ESPORTS.

It's just custom games?

This is pretty awesome. I can get my friends/gf to try the game without having them enter some really long Guest code.

It's The Wings Of Liberty Terran Campaign, Course its "Terran Bias".....

Could be a good way to get friends into the game who don't want to blow the $50 or $40 or however much it is. Good to see regardless of reasoning.

So give everyone access to the only thing is SC2 that actually matters? I have multiple friends who bought this game day one, play it daily, and still haven't jumped into any of the campaign, it would make no sense for them to give up the best part of their game for free...

Q. Can I play a match with other players who have the full game? Can I create a match with a friend?
A. StarCraft II players with a full game license can join a custom game on the trial maps to play with Starter Edition players. Please note that the party system is unavailable to Starter Edition players, so matchmaking will be random and it will not be possible to select specific players to play a match with.
This seems like a really odd choice. Maybe I've read it wrong, but it sounds very difficult to link up with friends using the starter pack.
I'd have thought something like 75% of the starter-pack guys would be sent to it by friends with the full game, and would want to try it primarily with their buddies. Really odd limitation on Blizzard's part; I feel like they've shot themselves in the foot there.
EDIT: Nevermind. I'm wrong.

disagree with having terran. i understand they do it to avoid people just dling the game and playing vs bots, but make it so somehow people can experience all the races.
maybe make some more restrictions? time limit or something.

They already have 7 day passes which give you full access. Time limits are annoying (I wouldn't have bought sc2 if i hadn't (hypothetically) borrowed my mates account and laddered for a while).
I think they should either have put in a "pick a race and you are stuck with it" (ie you can pick zerg but then you can't play terran) or make everyone random. But oh well.

Shouldn't you be at the very least neutral if not happy?

This feels kinda weird to be honest, I mean It could draw some new players in but really I don't see that being a problem at all considering SCII's popularity. I don't own SCII but the only reason is my computer sucks, if I had a better one I'd just buy the actual game.

This is great. I send the link to all my friends who should play Starcraft. I understand they choose Terran. I can imagine that new players think 'Oh man I realy want to try the other races, I'm gonna buy this game!'

can i make a korean account in starter edition? do i need a SSN?

This sounds like a better version of the demo version of the game which i downloaded before I was able to afford the actual game. Additions are like: 1 extra mission, limited multiplayer, different maps. I would totally agree that the multiplayer functionality makes it very appealing, though. Much more so than the previous demo. I was a little worried when i read about parties not being possible (as the main purpose would be to game with friends and not getting stomped by the tons of more experienced players out there), but having read through this thread, I will definitely try to set up some games with a couple friends (they are already into watching starcraft anyways). Great move by blizzard!
I can imagine that new players think 'Oh man I realy want to try the other races, I'm gonna buy this game!' Totally agree with this. I was just so bored by terran after a couple of weeks with the demo that it made me buy the game (i didn't even think of multiplayer at the time).

Props to Blizzard regardless.
Take into consideration that this starter edition is going to live for many years probably, through two expansions and hopefully beyond.
Seems like a great way to get new people into the experience!

Reminds me of SC1 demo, though it had different campaign that was prequel to actual game campaigns (which was pretty cool), but at least this one has more than 1 single map for TvT play. Byway was the sc1 demo map for multiplayer and it was hilariously bad (quite small and with only 1 expansions for each that were across the map for both players).

I can see why they limited the race to T, most casual players probably won't give a shit about ladder play so having all 3 races would be good enough for them

pretty cool effort by blizzard. especially the possibilty to watch replays is amazing to attract even more people to sc2 and the esport scene behind it.
|
They should have added a "Recruit a Friend" option. You could invite a friend through his battle.net account email, and he would download SC2 for free, but only be able to play unranked games on a small pool of 1v1 and 2v2 maps. He could only chat with you, and only join a lobby that you are present. No race restriction.
This would solve the "spawn" problem for people who want to play with a family member but doesn't want to buy a whole new account, and also would encourage people to buy the game after trying.
|
You can get on the korean server by getting a Taiwanese account right?

Way better then the few hours free trial. If they would let play all the races for nothing then there would be too much content in the starter edition for free.

My main pc is down for repairs, so I brought out my old pc. I loaded SC2 on it from my original game CDs and entered my battle.net account name.
And somehow, it came out as this starter edition. How did this happen? I paid for the full version, not some starter BS! My main pc isn't the starter version, installed from the same disc!

It's just an error. Ive got that also yesterday, a simple relog fixed it.

Wow this is awesome, one of the best demos ever lol

My friend edited some parameters in Starter Edition code, and after that he got this.
Also, here are link to download video with confirmation . Scroll down for more mirrors. Music at background is from Emperor: Battle for Dune (mediaplayer at background, music is not from game ) http://www.mirrorcreator.com/files/I7HGCVAS/
He said, that it's possible to replace starting objects with any, like 6 or more of any units, any building, etc

|

How about a way to play all the races (including random) in a free version. SC2 free - A dream came true. Velario (my friend) said me, how to do it:
+ Show Spoiler +Existor (20:04:46 6/08/2011) can you say me, what to do? I'll copypast to forum Velario (20:43:23 6/08/2011) okay, but I haven't tested it with player. Works well vs AI Velario (20:49:51 6/08/2011) First open something http://i.imgur.com/OxVvD.pngExistor (21:02:09 6/08/2011) and what to open? Velario (21:08:52 6/08/2011) Then edit somewhere inside. Use search function also. < StartingUnitArray Unit=" CommandCenter" /> replace it with Hatchery< StartingUnitArray Count="6" Unit=" SCV" > replace with Drone<...> //some code here, don't edit it < /StartingUnitArray > Here you must put another starting unit - Overlord. Scroll document untill end and you will find Overlord unit. Copypast full tag and place after Drones. Syntax is easy, so you can do anything. Existor (21:16:25 6/08/2011) thank you!

Edit: This will sound lame, what program is that? Edit2: found it using google.
Edit3: I'm getting 'desync' every time I try to play...

Edit3: I'm getting 'desync' every time I try to play... 2Edit: you know 2Edit2: yeah, google helps a lot 2Edit3: try that vs AI? Try to give your opponent same file? 2average: maybe they fixed that after I've reported with this thing to blizzard. Well, you can see video in some of earlier posts in this topic, where it demonstrates 6bcruisers and zerg race instead terran. If they fixed that, so Blizzard aren't lazy with fixing things, like this

Works VS AI. I'm looking over here maybe I can find what file disables your ability to choose other races. Who knows what I can find :D

But I havent asked him more, because I already have full game and dont need unlocks in starter edition.

Oh and im in Europe. For you and basically everyone who is using starter editions:
Go to custom games (join), and search for Xel Naga or Shattered Temple, choose the (faster) version.
You will basically be able to vs (as Terran) a random range of bronze-master level players who like to custom instead of ladder (I was just messing about as I usually do on customs and it works normally, it's all open to public NOT invite only). If you love Terran...you literally could play starter edition forever with decent levels opponents as long as Shattered/Xel Naga don't lose popularity.
|
I just don't understand why they don't make a free version that includes only custom games with all 3 races. Include a mappack with 1 or 2 of each map for 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4. Honestly I think that this is a smart business strategy because the reason that they're making this demo in the first place is for existing players to recommend the game to their friends. The existing player base is not going to recommend this demo version to friends because they can't PLAY WITH THEIR FRIENDS.

Starter Edition would be great for promoting Blizzards DOTA if they allow people to play it like Starjewel :X
|
OK I'd been playing at my bf's house (no money to buy game, lol, and we weren't sure if my puter would run it decently) so I've downloaded the starter edition to test it. I couldn't log in cos it wanted a cd key. Talked to Blizzard help people, and they said I need a guest pass key OR I need to call the accounts dept who will give me access. Accounts department is in the US, so I have to call at some odd hour to catch them when they're open...
Does this seem crazy to anyone else?
Why don't they allow the starter edition to be playable without a key? Or give you a key whn you download it? Or set it up so your battle.net account automatically registers that you've downloaded it?
ALSO... you can access the full version through the starter edition. My bf logged in to see if it was working properly, after I couldn't get in, and he can access the whole game.

I really like this. Great way to draw more people into the fold.

So, theoretically I can download the Korean client and play custom xelnaga as terran all I want?

I can't play decent custom games because of this...
|
Can you see replays of maps that are not one of the 4?
|
I'm pretty sure yeah, since you already have the maps.
|
more than enough to make you buy starcraft 2

I recently downloaded and installed SC2 Starter Edition. I'm having troubles watching downloaded replays... am I alone in this problem? It stats this version can watch replay of any version... but i cant seem to do that...
|
If you has any question of getting the game or not. This should help you lol. Great Download.

I see... I kinda hoped that it would have played more versions... sigh... oh well... free is free is suppose. Thanks again for the Starter's Edition... Been playing tons of multiplayers !!
Thx Blizzard

I noticed on my EU account, that it has auto access to the NA Starter Edition under my games.
|
I've ran into a lot of sc2 free version users today in custom matches...I kinda feel bad since it's such an unforgiving and hard game to learn and master.

Is there a way to install this on a computer that already has the full game installed? I tried to install the Taiwan starter edition but it wants to delete existing sc2 files from when i installed my North American SC2.

having same problems

I just downloaded the starter edition, but I am unable to play ANY of custom maps (single player vs AI). Even the 4 maps that are supposedly available are locked. Has anyone else had this problem? EDIT: Figured it out. You just have to create a "MULTIPLAYER" game and add in AI

Hey guys, I have a friend who wants to try the starter edition, but his internet isn't good enough to download the whole game (it would take a long long time).
Would it be okay if I just lend him my SCII CD? He can install the game with that, and play the starter edition with his own account? Or, is the starter edition a different client/package that needs to be downloaded specifically?

Just wanted to let everyone know that you cannot observe games as a starter edition player. So making an NA starter edition account does not allow casters to use that as a casting account.
