The only comparison he has for LoL would be Dota (2) and Wheat openly admits that he has very little experience with the genre.

I think it has more to do with LoL being twitch.tv's most successful game and riot hires him to host events. I guess you might be right but I have a hard time imaginging the djwheat of esports past defending or championing for riot with the shitty tactics they've employed to not just inflate their own game but to harm others in this space. I feel like if a company was trying to do this 5 years ago before this much money was involved the Lo3 crew and the community at large would have took a huge shit on Riot for 1) trying to strongarm a lesser more casual game into our scene and 2) actively trying to control and stop growth in other esports. This is my only real qualm with Scoots end of the show speech about supporting what you like and not supporting what you don't like, but don't hate, etc. He often makes comparisons to baseball and football etc., but it's an analogy that doesn't work. It would make perfect sense if their wasn't blatant hostility in the MOBA market where one company is trying to actively strongarm the others out. Baseball doesn't try to kill football, we can watch both. Communities, sponsors, players and all of the little pieces that fit together make both sports viable. You can't preach to people to not hate on LoL if you like DOTA or SC2 or whatever; because LoL is actually trying to fuck over your game, not simple build it's own. There is no reason to hate SC2 as a dota 2 fan, or vice versa. They aren't harming each other, they are both trying to grow. Riot has given players of games like DOTA or HON plenty of reasons to hate and be vocal. You can't use the tactics they've become known for without catching backlash. It's not a cozy little world that allows us to enjoy our game, you enjoy yours. It should be, but Riot has changed the rules.

And why is it wrong for the developer to put money into the eSports side of their game ? The competitive scene is happily growing and the developer markets their product.

Can you please explain to me why is it wrong ? I don't think there is any chance in the world a developer would sponsor an event that would then go on and use that money directly or indirectly to host a tournament for a competing game. That's just impossible, it will never happen. As far as I know (and I've read almost everything on the subject) tournaments can pick up competing games and Riot won't go against them. Dreamhack has been hosting multiple moba tournaments, Carmac from ESL/IEM said there's no contract prohibiting them picking Dota2 and MLG has also said something similar about looking into dota2 and they recently opened their gamebattles competition to Dota2 and they also broadcasted a showmatch of it too. Exclusivity on its own doesn't say much, it can be good or bad. If Riot forced organizations that the only way to host LoL tournaments was to take their money, do everything their way, not allow competing games and have the contract binding for a long time then yes it would be extremely bad for the overall scene. But from the info we have nothing of that seems to be happening.

I don't think there is any chance in the world a developer would sponsor an event that would then go on and use that money directly or indirectly to host a tournament for a competing game. That's just impossible, it will never happen. Sc2 is a competing game why does riot let tournaments use their money to run sc2 events? The games are not completely different genres like shooters or fighters and sc2 still gets a lot of attention and money at these events that could be going to LoL if it was the only choice. Especially since we know blizzard all-stars is coming out included for free in the sc2 starter edition better kill that now rather then let it get a chance to grow. So you would be OK if riot added sc2 to the list of games that tournaments can't run if they accept riot's money, and succeed to get many tournaments to drop sc2? Also I hope DJwheat didn't try to convince Riot to go back to their brilliant business strategy of team exclusivity while he was at the world finals. They could really cripple dota 2 and sc2 with that if they ever change their mind again. And the more LoL grows the more likely they are to succeed if they try!

As for the team exclusivity, I don't think it was even close to happening and I don't see it happening in the near future. The benefits from such a move are so little compared to the negatives. They will be much better off continuing growing LoL and laughing at the other developers' inability to respond.
