Hey guys, we recently started a Youtube show called SC2 Mythbusters. It's a lot like the show - we put user-submitted myths relating to Starcraft to the test. The myths range from common things like "the kills on high templars are added when warped into archons" to crazy things like "a viking's portrait changes when it transforms." Feel free to send in anything you are wondering about the Starcraft universe; we'll put it to the test!

These guys are trying something different. Think of the time they take to do it. Sure you can test it yourself or you can share the fun.

Theres always one person who has to ruin the party.... today you are that person.

Mythbusters doesn't need money, most of the myths are common sense, like when they spend thousands disproving the moon hoax theories.... anyone who's studied physics, cosmology, jet propulsion, photography etc could have told you what they did, infact there are a thousand websites setup by people with 0 dollars that do tha same thing.

Edit: the fungal one is funny, dead larvae from one fungal.... didn't realise they had such low health lol.

So let me get this straight - you can contaminate a flying building, but it has no effect since you were able to land and build a reactor with that building? So is this a bug, a special feature of your map tester, or is it supposed to work this way?

Also - does the killed baneling deal the same damage as a normal baneling?

Everything on the map is the same as it is a normal melee (ladder) game on a blizzard map, just the spawn time of everything is set to 0, for faster testing.

Why did that contaminated rax instant build a reactor? I would assume that it couldn't land period, let alone land and build something.

Interesting idea. I definitely learned a few things. It's not so much that I can't test these things myself, but rather am too lazy too Never thought about many of these myths which makes it all the more interesting.

The Raven detecting for the PDDs and then them still intercepting the hallucinated shots seems slightly buggy to me.

Well the raven was right there during the test, I assume the hallucinations were showing up as such.

Neat idea for a show. At first I was a bit skeptical but a lot of these are things I've never bothered to think about, and it's great to see what sorts of crazy things can happen in the game! Cool stuff :D

Whoah, the chrono Boosted hatchery part really blew my mind.

I knew most of the others*smugface* but that one was awesome.Now I kinda want to do a super Fast Roach Rush with this.

Edit: Nvm it seems your ally can't use chrono on your buildings

Great! Things to test - degrees of (non)determinism:
1. Perfect symmetric map with 2 identical paths from A to B, and automated trigger telling a unit to go from A to B. See if it always chooses the same path of the two.
2. Again with trigger (no manual interaction! as opposed to unit tester) let 2 army compositions fight each other. See if the winner is always the same.

Very neat. I love the original Mythbusters, and this is just as much fun. Your music fits well, and everything is to the point, which is awesome. Maybe now is time to add a bit of humor into it? (something like the 'Confirmed' sounds).

By the way, the fact that hallucinations can be repaired is mind-boggling >..<

Alright, I always wondered about this... does the shield upgrade nullify when your shields are spent and the armor upgrades becomes active ?

Lol at the people not knowing the Fungal growth one. Other things that work: singular baneling, storm, seeker missle (have not tested the seeker or storm, but they work in theory).
The only barrier to truth is the presumption that you already have it. It's through our pane (pain) we window (win though).

Please test this myth

Resources are lost if a structure is destroyed before upgrade is finished.

(I tested and it returns them but I still hear pro's like Sheth tell players like Mr Bitter that they must cancel or they lose the resources)

Did not see the episode (-> sorry if it has already been answered) but if your ally leaves the game, can you chrono the hatch then?

Don't think so, as the building still counts as being controlled by them. You can only chrono zerg (and terran) buildings if you neural parasite a probe to make a nexus.

hehe interesting idea and nice to watch, all i learnd though was that in team tag protoss and zerg combined are really evil xD. But some things looked really funny. Like the baneling killed in the air, and red blood raining down on the lings then exploding xD. delayed baneling mine, you lift your allys baneling in the air terran army running in killing the baneling running to the phönix and splat dead marines. If of course it works that way. It could be that the splash damage is already marked on those ling, so they die everywhere even inside of a nydus when the thing hits the ground, or the other way round units could run into it the dropping parts without a problem hehe.

And stop throwing around with this is a bug, atleast if it concerns terrans, we can life with it.

Nice stuff, but you should mention in those videos in which Patch Version you did these tests. I have the feeling some of the "Myths" you tested are already patched out, e.g. the Chronoboosted Hatchery.

pdd and hallucination is so cool. Now I dont need to die to raven timing attacks as long as I get hallucination and make a few pheonix to help absorb some of the pdd energy since they shoot 2 lasers :o

* Can you warp in units on a mothership vortex? ( when you have a pylon or warp prism around )
* Does Fungal Growth permanently decloak unitls under a mothership?

* Do units still dance when they get vortexed?
* Do units dance when lifted by a Pheonix?

Got into a debate last night about whether or a not an immortal takes 10 damage from a nuke or the full damage

It takes full damage
Also takes the full 100 from Seeker Missile
Couldn't find another ability that did more than 10 damage to test with
I was shocked because of how the editor skill is defined, figured it always reduced damage to 10 if shields > 1

It only reduces damage from regular attacks right? Spells and stuff don't count.

heh, funny, but I'm 99.99% sure DTs don't turn visible under a mothership

I have heard that you get the money back and the cooldown resets, though I haven't confirmed that one myself.

DTs turn visible under a mothership, however, if your ally also has a mothership, and your DT is under both of them, then it remains cloaked.

On a more serious note, you get money back and cooldown resets when the pylon is killed.

As for hardened shields, they only reduce damage from physical damage. "Magical" damage isn't affected by hardened shield (nuke, storm, fungal, yamato, etc...)

Just checked out the first four episodes. Everything you tested so far is very interesting, although a few are more common knowledge (at least in my opinion). I'm curious how much more material you have for future episodes, it has to run out at some point. It's a great idea though, it's always fun to test these things. I'm not sure why people are commenting on how (non)useful some of these tests are. Haven't you always wanted to find out something out of curiosity without worrying about actual applications of it?

I think you should try to test things out in "real" game settings as much as possible though. By this, I mean as opposed to doing it with the unit tester. It just adds more validity to the whole thing so that people don't have that doubt.

If you are accepting ideas in this thread, I'm curious if chronoboosting a hatchery makes the larva spawned by the hatchery (not from queen vomit) spawn faster. It's understandable that the spawn larva spell would "produce" faster, but it's a different question for the hatchery's internal timer.

Immortal shields don't block spell damage. 250 mm strike cannons, psi storm, nukes, all those are not blocked by shields.

Will the broodlings die mid-air if a stalker blinks away from the broodlord's shot?

Like the show, but you should do a voice over if you can. That way you can listen to the show and not actually have to watch it unless you disbelieve some part of it.

Myth 1: gravity lifting Immortals can negate 250mm cannon
Myth 2: Hallucinated Archons tank more damage than a hallucinated immortal
Myth 3: Scans can revel if unit is a hallucination or not

WTF is this true? For team games this could be useful if your build is really timing sensitive, and your teammate takes workers off mining gas (for example they are Korean 4 warp gating). This of course requires them to be in the same base.

I've got one. I've read on the strategy forums that PDD negates the broodlings spawned by brood lords. I'm too lazy to test if this is true because I hardly ever see ravens used when I have brood lords. (Most of the time the terran just freaks out and scrambles to build vikings.)
What's that probe doing there? It's a scout. You mean one of those flying planes? No....

The broodlings still spawn and do damage on impact, but they die as soon as they hit a unit. they stay alive vs buildings though, iirc.

I don't think that it is a bug... how does a PDD know if that fake shot is really fake ... it doesn't have detection built in.

Only with neural parasited probe that built a nexus. You can not chronoboost allied buildings. The Protoss leaving the game doesn't work either. It has to be a Nexus built by the Zerg.

Only with neural parasited probe that built a nexus. You can not chronoboost allied buildings. The Protoss leaving the game doesn't work either. It has to be a Nexus built by the Zerg.

Maybe not a true myth in and of itself, but I would love to see a zerg NP an enemy protoss probe, build a nexus, make zerg "probes" and then surprise the enemy protoss with broodlords, voidrays, and collosi.

hahah this is funny, i loved the fungals on the larva! That could come in handy i guess, insta kill production. Does the zerg get his money refunded when you kill larva that are making something?

Great show, don't have any myths to suggest though, just keep it up! I would consider changing the font and design of your video though, looks really cheesy and overdone - maybe take some tips from defendthehouse's mythbusting videos? They have a pretty slick video design/layout.

It's on the tooltip, I don't understand why it's considered a myth.

Cool idea, never thought of some of these things. The font in the last two videos makes it hard to read the myth before the text disappears. Please use a clearer font.

Couple of ideas to test:
1) in a team game, can your allies units be loaded into your nydus, medivac, or warp prism?
2) if a ghost is lifted by graviton beam while calling a nuke, does the nuke still land? if it doesn't land, is it cancelled or is the nuke lost?
3) if an infestor is lifted while it has a unit NPed, does the NP cancel?
4) can force fields be placed around the vortex to keep the units clustered like the fungal did?
5) if you put just one SCV into a medivac or bunker, can it repair itself? does it cost extra?
6) you showed that a hallucination was repaired, but does it cost minerals to do so? (unit tester doesn't have mins)

There's some discussion about this now that the archon range has been increased:

Do archons have linear splash damage (like hellions) in addition to their radial splash damage at point of impact?

I'm really curious now.

Watched these all, very good, but horrible music choices, would much prefer a voice over that would make it very much better, but I just muted, still a good video even without sound. Oh and the content is good, but after i think episode , you got really fancy with the effects and lettering, way overdone, very sloppy and only takes away from the video

cool ideas. only checked out the first vid, but had to put the video on mute also when showing off a units HP i'd prefer it if you didn't wave the cursor in front of the HP so when i pause to look at it, it's not constantly blocked. thanks and keep them coming!

Earlier today I heard MrBitter talk about how a burrowed baneling on auto-unburrow might be able to kill a nexus being warped in right next to it. The idea is that you burrow the baneling right next to where the protoss would place a nexus, and then once he starts warping it in the baneling will instantly unborruw and kill the nexus before it gets any health.

Sounds ridiculous to me, but I'm too lazy to check it out myself.

Banshee portrait also changes when it goes from uncloaked to cloaked and viceversa =) . People who watches the GSL probably knows that.

Actually, it's not a bug, it was intentionally put in by Blizzard. Of course, the trade-off for being able to repair whilst protected is that repairing in a bunker/medivac costs 3x as much as it normally does to repair.

Actually was wondering something, but I'm too lazy to test it. Lucky that you are here!

Does a sentry that is channeling Guardian Shield still provide the damage reduction when lifted up by phoenix?




(I havent actually seen this and thought about it, so dunno if it's obvious, like the shield stops when they're lifted etc so feel free to bm me if i'm being dumb.)

Works with storm as well, it's because spells ignore armor, and larvae's survivability comes from loads of armor, that's why a zealot uses ages on killing it, while a DT oneshots it.

I had no idea that SCV's could still autorepair while in bunkers and medivacs. Now I just have to find a situation in which this will actually be useful.

Great show by the way. Before I had to load up the unit tester to try these things out, but now your show makes it a lot easier for me, while also presenting some ideas I wouldn't have thought of on my own.

Also noticed that Naniwa did actually cancel an upgrade right before his forge was destroyed, so it seems he also doesnt know this, which is weird because he comes from wc3 where you did get back the resources if the building was destroyed.

Im pretty sure that in episode 1 that one with the baneling is faulty, he clearly drops before he gets his final hit.. so he explodes on the ground, if you keep him gravitated he wont kill ground units.

You're correct, the graviton beam ended before the baneling died. Redoing the myth next episode (EP7)

i disagree with the FF vortex result, in the vid you had half the FF on the vortex, if you moved it to ring the outside of the vortex without touching the vortex they should still hold the units in

Btw, in Episode 3, the fact you can keep units clumped after a vortex by using fungal growth...that looks like the next MS toilet ^^ Sure, you can't use Archons and do it by yourself, but in Team games it looks pretty useful.

Does the muta splash split depend on the armor of the initial target or is the original damage value "conserved" and the armor values of each target applied separately?

Watched all of them in a row and really enjoyed these, keep them coming I assume one day you will run out of "material" but I hope you continue to find things to analyze and maybe even go into strategy rumors, etc. to figure out if certain things can beat other things as far as strats go.

yes they 'lose' the upgrade because the zerg player hasn't researched it (yet). they also lose any weapon/armor upgrades because the zerg player hasn't up'ed his "terran weapon/armor upgrades" yet either - the upgrades all revert to his level.

if he takes over zerg units, they will 'switch' to his upgrade/tech levels as well.
rock is fine.. paper could need a buff, but scissors have to be nerfed

i've tried (months ago) with the regular zerg units, but i must admit i haven't tried building up toss with a parasite-probe in order to test hallucinations. otoh, they cannot be loaded into a warp prism either and nydus pretty much works like a shuttle

i dont think those templars kills added correctly in ep1, should not the archon be at 35?

But that's wrong

If I put a Nydus in your base and let out 20 roaches, let's say and do damage and run back inside of the Nydus and you kill the Worm, I can still exit them out of the main building or another worm head that's come out.

If you mean kill the main building, then yes, I'm pretty sure they are lost.

ahyes, that explanation was indeed ambiguous. it is true that all exits must be killed for units to get lost. it is even ok to lose the network as long as there's still a worm somewhere else.

Does lifting/Vortexing a neural parasited unit break channeling? What if the investor is out/in the vortex?
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

If you have a mothership and it gets stolen by a neural parasite, can you start producing another mothership during this time, seeing as one requirement of the mothership is "no mothership"?

This is so cool! I didn't know about hallus and PDDs, and I also didn't know hallu probes couldn't fake mine.

Most interesting one was the infested terran shooting himself, I didn't realize that one.

their attack is 'hardcoded' to be a ground attack. other ground attack units would do the same if it weren't for the fact that they cant do so while being under the influence of graviton beam - the baneling is special in that it goes boom upon death.
otherwise.... toss could lift their own immortals and deal buckets of armored dmg to air units ^^

I like the ones you guys are doing.

Don't suggest myths that are using unspecific words like on average and in comparison.

I like these episodes a lot.

All the respect for you, its a brilliant idea and a great job, but you should change the font because its too tiresome for eyes. The first episodes was much better with a classic and smaller font.

I agree that the font should be changed. There are also many typos: untis, struture, nerual, etc.

I'd like to see some unit counter myths tested. Are immortals cost-effective against stimmed marauders? If you don't micro phoenixes, do 10 phoenixes still counter their cost in mutalisks?

This is true when Zerg wins. It is very hard to find a game where the Zerg has less economy and wins, except for when going all in.

I don't think you can test that, it depends too much on the specifics of each game (i.e. how many larva did the zerg have to use to stay alive).

Great stuff, keep it up!

I didn't know about the upgrades still giving you money back when the forge is destroyed. I also remember some casting from the GSL when they were screaming about not being able to cancel the upgrade in time ^^ ...or has it been changed with a patch? Seems unlikely.

I have an idea from something Tyler mentioned on SotG

First myth: you can lift your own units with a gravitron beam (just to give background, this will be confirmed)

Second: you can lift your units (or theirs I suppose not that you would want to) out of a strike cannon attack, fungal growth, etc...
