Cool idea! The biggest thing for me is just whether the streamer talks. I understand its hard to talk and play, but thats what will have me watching someone else video game. I enjoy streams from both an educational and observatonal (mindlessly watching) perspective and will generally only watch streams where they talk. The reason I think Steven Bonell got so popular (in addition to him being hilariously offensive) was just that he NEVER stopped talking as of 3 months after he started streaming. I think Sheth has gotten massively popular because he mixes up humor/light trash-talking with almost always commenting on why he's doing what he's doing.

Definitely a valid point, but look at IdrA. 2 hours of nonstop games, with no chat, and he routinely draws 10k viewers. The highest level of gameplay possible draws people in more than anything, in my opinion.

If IdrA commentated on his games as he played them like Sheth does, he'd be even more popular than he is now. I know I would watch him more for sure.

Some people who stream have very good music, but if it gets to a song I dont like or am not feeling I'll just mute it for 3-4 minutes.

I'd prefer if streamers dont talk while they're in game, so they dont get distracted, but after the game they can discuss what went wrong/right and answer questions from chat. Thats always interesting.

what i really like is discovering new type of music/artists and also when i struggle in one match i try to see what the player is doing. For example i copied your TvZ 1/1/1 hellion marine medivac followed by 2 banshee and i win more often now :D

I really much prefer streams without music. At best it'll mostly be music I like and people who don't like it will be complaining in chat and the streamer is less likely to interact with the audience, and at worst it's truely awful from my point of view and there's no possibility of interaction if it's muted. Additionally I quite like the game sounds and either option is detrimental to that.

I won't watch racist, sexist or otherwise overly abusive streamers at all, though mild language isn't really an issue, espexially during a frustrating game or something as a slip up.

Finally audience interaction of some sort, even if it's just talking aloud as opposed to a dialogue is a must. People like Sheth and MrBitter are perfect examples of the kind of streams I'll watch 24 hours a day if they're up and I have the time.

I actually watch streams solely for educational value but that in itself is entertaining to me. Who said learning can't be fun? And the thing that matters most to me is the skill of the player. I just don't really like watching bad or mediocre players. My favorite streamers are the ones who play fast, and well.

Commentary is neutral for me. I appreciate commentary but I don't care if the streamer doesn't or can't talk. The reason commentary can be kinda bad for me is that the streamer will talk sporadically. So there will be minutes of silence, during which I'll want to mute game sounds and play my own music. But I don't know if he's going to say something mind-blowing the next second. Basically, I just watch streams because I like to watch the FPView of pros and gain insight for my own play.

Music also doesn't matter. I'll usually mute the stream and play my own music because I don't like hearing game sounds (because I usually do other stuff too while having a stream open). But if a streamer has music that I like, I'll just listen to that.

About the profanity / racism thing, if the guy streaming is being racist the I'm not going to watch it. As for profanity, I don't get offended by it but if someone can't say anything without cursing (like huk) I'll turn it off because I'll get annoyed at how stupid and ineloquent it sounds. I'm surprised at the results of that poll actually.

Love the poll options, they're all separated and not extreme yes/no answers.

I think that ladder is a big choice is because there is always something on the line, you don't know who your gonna get as your opponent, and so many things can happen in those games that differ from standard play so im not too surprised by any of the choices stated.

Really nice thread.

I'm a big stream watcher, it's fairly obvious the streams where the broadcaster has a microphone and uses it are the most popular and well received. I haven't heard Idra talk much but he's one of the few that can totally get away with that whilst maintaining a huge viewer count.
Tyler has a webcam active as he plays which is pretty cool & unique.

I really like it when the streamer is interacting with someone else in skype. Nothing beats hearing destiny and those he's playing with and teammates and such shooting the shit and criticizing each other's gameplay decisions. It is like listening to a radio show, and when something interesting happens I can alt tab into it and see it go down.

Yeah, that's why I said it was "definitely a valid point."

I'm of the opinion that consistent high level play is most important.

Such a great bunch of polls. It made me think of what I enjoy in a stream.

For one, I mostly dislike music. It almost never matches my taste and I would much rather hear their insight or their conversation on Skype with other community members. If you insist on music though, please make sure you have a decent bitrate because the audio compression artifacts on certain streams are just unbearable.

So video quality is important but not a deal-breaker for me. I find myself caring for lag-free rather than super-high graphics. As long as I can see you micro those banelings fluidly whilst you take out an entire worker mineral line, we're cool.

The best kind of streamer is the one who:

- Has a clear and good resolution stream which doesn't lag
- Checks his streamchat often to comment on what's being said, interacting with his viewers
- Talks through the games explaining his thought process on the go
- Has 'character' or 'charisma'

Let's get the next sotg to 20k viewers then he'll do live coaching sessions all week.

Interaction with the viewers and on-the-go analysis of the game draws me in a lot, which is why I really enjoy Spanishiwa's, Artosis' and TotalBiscuit's streams.

Watching IdrA is fun because he is such a solid player - but I always mute his music. Not a huge fan of dubstep.

I really like desrow/Catz/Drewbie/Hashe and will go to them when they stream.

I enjoy it when they respond to chat, and just talk. It doesn't have to be constant, but some interjection to know there is a person and not an AI is crucial. Even talking with friends on Vent/TS/Skype/Shouting across the house (only one place this happens ) gives a more human element.

The lesson part is interesting, and I will look at dia/masters lessons as there are sometimes things mentioned that I do not know.

The music: Don't play Butterfly on repeat for 5 hours. Please don't. I prefer more neutral music, so Huk/Idra fail on that count for me.

Slight profanity is OK, but if they are constantly trashing people, and not in a tasteful way, no thank you.

I like it when streamers I know play UMS games, but not all games. Some are much better when talking. Best example is a while back when the entire ROOT team was on the debate UMS, and they were constantly mocking each other.

EDIT: Please don't be constantly shouting either, and be intelligible, TB completely fails on the shouting count for me. Not too sure about his game knowledge. I do know there are others who like him and I'm fine with that.

One thing that really bugs me is watching people browse the internet.

Huk is definitely the biggest offender here. I never turn on his stream anymore because when I did he was either watching K-Pop on youtube or browsing Facebook or Teamliquid.

While I like commentating, at least IdrA never streams himself browsing the internet, because no one cares about that. Seems like they're just trying to get more ads or something.
