there doesn't seem to be a designated fan art section on this site, so I decided to make a thread about this. Please tell me if I should be posting this somewhere else.
Check out TEAM REVOKI's SC2 movie posters: ( I would post them all here but it's too many to simply post them in a row)
It's the clan I'm in. I decided to get better at photoshop, so I started working on some SC2 stuff. I think SC2 lends itself very well to the creation of fan art.
It takes about 20 - 30 minutes per poster, depending on the complexity of the changes. The hardest part is actually coming up with ideas. Msg me if you got some, or post them on facebook if you want a particular poster made
Awesome posters! I love it! Do you use layers or masks when you edit them in PS? Layers are easier to work with imo but masks give you more flexibility if you know what you're doing. Would you mind sharing a PS file with me? Would like to see your individual steps
The posters are cool but to me this thread seems to be directed not so much at "fan art" but at "look at these cool clan posters I have" and I'm not sure that's appropriate for the general forum. Hell, even if it were just SC2 fan art that should go on the SC2 forum, should it not?
Yes I thought about that already and probably will. In the meantime there's also some other artists here you should take a look at! Just search the Teamliquid forum for "art".
I'm new here, I like Starcraft 2 and since I'm a visual artist I combined the love with some work. Two classic animations sprouted that are tributes to Husky (who made me buy the game and play a lot more) and Day9 (who made my last winter fun).
I hope you like them and do some constructive commenting!
Hi! I don't mean to hijack the thread, but like the OP pointed out, there isn't a specific subforum for fan art, so I figured I would add my own stuff here as well. Unfortunately, a lot of it is still unfinished and in progress, but I love to get feedback from anywhere that I can, so bear with me.
This is a logo that I'm doing for CricketStarcraft:
This will be a Zealot fighting a pair of Roaches deep behind enemy lines:
This is a commission, which will be of a Zergling taking away a Marine's rifle:
This is a personal work of Kerrigan tormenting her prey:
This will be a Stalker fighting a Reaper:
This is a crossover piece. It's a Halo Elite fighting a Zealot. You can see the intial sketch below, followed by some color work:
Although it isn't exactly traditional fan art, I have a thread detailing a diorama that I'm constructing in the general forum. Here's a link:

I have to say, that I literally laughed out loud when i saw your cheese factory
I used AE to tweak the details, add explosions and similar special effects, but first I had to create and render all the scenes using 3ds max. This particular animation is rather post-production heavy, 'cause the raw 3d footage has been really rushed (the whole thing is a kind of subproject), thus has left much to be desired. Oh, and I used photoshop to make some of the textures, as well as to paint the background for the dandelion intro .

Thanks! That's my first finished animation, I only have screenshots from my other works-in-progress, or abandoned projects, but nothing SC-related .
I experimented with AE, too... but I find it a really complex program to use. Powerful but very difficult to use if you want great looking results. I just don't have the time for that at the moment. I'll still to Photoshop for the time being. Good work on your videos though! And how long did it take to render the stuff in 3ds max?
Yeah, AE is indeed quite complicated. A good way to learn it would be to start off with some tutorials in order to get an idea of how to mix different effects to achieve certain results, and then just mess around and experiment a lot. But it's definetely time consuming. Not as much as 3ds max, though. Good thing about AE is that you get to see the results of your work in the real time, while in Max you have to render it first, which can take like 20 minutes per frame. It can obviously hinder the overall workflow. The final rendering took many nights to finish, but it didn't really count .
Yes I did some tutorials. But that shit takes forever to render... especially underwater scenes... I like AE though... I like the great flexibility it gives you. I just don't have time to really learn how to use it.
20 mins per frame in 3ds max?! what kinda hardware are you running this on? I guess you can render your stuff overnight?! I never thought I'd need a good video card for anything other than gaming...
I'm using Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz, with 6 GB of RAM and geforce gtx 470. I had to invest in it last year, cause my old pc couldn't handle rendering of some scenes in other projects (ironically, it worked well for most games).
Render time is highly dependant on what is rendered and on what settings. When you're using default scanline renderer to render some simple geometry, it will take seconds. But more advanced engines, like mental ray or vray (my case) produce better results and thus require more resources. Scenes rich in high quality reflections, light sources, shadows, complex geometries, and additional effects like DoF or motion blur can be really painful to render. That being said, 20 minutes per frame is still a bit extreme, and usually can be remedied through proper optimalisation. I just wasn't in a mood to play with hundrets of parameters . And yes, most of the final rendering was done overnight.
At what resolution do you render your stuff? HD or just for youtube? Have you ever worked on a Mac? Their desktops are supposedly good for this kind of stuff.
Maybe I'll look into this again when I have better hardware. Right now it's no fun, so I stick to photoshop. And I'm using a laptop, so I can't really upgrade it either.

For this animation I rendered most scenes at 1280x720, but I intend to increase the resolution for future projects. This calls for better optimalisation though.
I've had only a limited contact with Mac computers, they're not really popular here in Poland.
Experience with photoshop will most likely prove to be really beneficial if you decide to give AE another shot, since they use fairly similar interfaces. PS skills are also practically a must when it comes to 3d graphics, so polishing them is always a good investment . Not to mention, it's a powerful tool on it's own.
I agree, PS is a good skill to have. And easily applicable to stuff other than SC2 pics. Though I have to say GIMP has improved a lot, too. A few years ago the user interface was so bad that the whole thing was basically unusable, but now it's almost on par with PS.
@Ving: very nice effects! Hm, maybe I 'll take a look at After Effects, seems to be a good alternative way instead of using plugins like afterburn ect.
anyway, I made two small starcraft cinematics, too. the first one is a few years ago. but currently I work on the second one. this is some kind of teaser:
feel free to say what you think, some feedback would be great!
"Well, Clarice... have the lings stopped screaming?" WARNING!!! THIS FILM IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR EDGY ZERG PLAYERS! Watch at your own risk! I was 12 or so when I watched that movie... and it really freaked me out...

Write up a blog about it on TL here, top left there's a "blog" button. Pretty sure that's how you create one. That'll be how you get the spotlight that you deserve, it looks badass!

Last year, hubby was still playing Protoss, so I crocheted him an amigurumi probe. That wasn't as successful as I liked, but he loved it.
This year, he has switched race to Zerg. So I knitted this baneling up for his birthday.
It took me about 20-30 hours to finish, while watching GSL/IPL/IEM/MLG/WCG-KR of course. It accompanied us when we watched Blizzcon stream. It was a ZvZ (Ret vs Sen) -- so meta.
The baneling definitely had the Centrifugal Hooks upgrade, as it can be rolled. Our 2-year-old rolls this onto daddy's face to wake him up this morning. (Sorry no pics.)

That's an amazing piece of work, makes me wish I knew how to crochet

Please do! That was sooo amazing. Not only is it extremely skillful. I asume it also takes a shitload of time/patience/tears etc... Seriously wicked man. Huge props to you.
Hi guys, I've been posting some art-focused blogs, had no idea there was a fan art thread! So here is my latest, will probably do a blog about it later, not sure I'm finished!
LOL, my favorites are the Chrono Boost of Narnia and the Evolution Chamber of Secrets. The Narnia one is absolutely your best work so far, Tiberius. You are getting quite good at matching the style and color scheme of the original and added content!
to map the path ahead of me, but maybe some SC2 fan art afficionados appreciate it as well.
