Hi Everyone
Just wanted to say I launched a mobile app for SC2Ranks for Android. It should now be available on the Android Market.
I'll be taking feedback (in the form of suggestions, bugs, insults, etc.) in this thread.
Special thanks to Shadowed for his great site and Mobile API. Here's the original SC2Ranks thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=141629

EDIT:
I'm an Android developer. I don't know anything about iPhone and I don't have the necessary equipment to make an iPhone version. Sorry guys
If somebody wants to take up the challenge, they have to contact Shadowed and talk to him about it.

You are awesome! I have wanted this for a while now and nearly undertook the effort myself. Any chance of getting the charts from the site into the app? that would be a nice touch.
|
I don't think I will be able to unfortunately. I would have loved to have that, but I don't see it as being possible. If I find a way I will.
|
Is there an apple app store one
|
Anyway this will ever make its way on to the iPhone?
|
I'm an Android guy unfortunately
I won't be able to make an iPhone one. Maybe somebody else can take up the challenge.
|
Can you tell me what its exactly called? I can't seem to find it atm :/
Edit: Found it :D
|
out of curiosity, is it easy for noobs to program apps for android and what do you need to program apps?
|
Woot, thanks for this
|
Do you have a barcode scanner? If so, you can scan that image and it'll take you directly there.
Run a search for Sc2ranks on the Android Market and you should find it.
|
|
I haven't been able to find someone who wanted to make an iPhone app for the fun of it like RageKage, majority of people who contacted me on it we're looking at it as a 'get rich quick' kind of deal.
Looks good!

It is pretty easy to get up and running. Do you have any programming experience? The Android SDK is in Java. If you don't know Java, I'd recommend learning the basics before getting started. There's a good deal of support online in the form of forums (esp. stackoverflow), so you just need some patience and a willingness to learn.
You'll need Eclipse IDE and the Android SDK to start. You can google those and find them. You can also find good instructions on setting everything up online (it is pretty easy). It's all free unless you want to upload to the Android Market, then you just need to pay a one time fee of $25 to make a Developer Account.
|
Some of the images are off for me. It looks like you used an image map and the coordinates are wrong. You get like half of the picture merged with another picture. (Droid X btw).

Thanks. I've had only basic java experience and struggle to get a lot of the concepts. is there a good beginners guide online?

There are lots of good guides. Just search for "Java Beginner's Tutorial" or something like that.

so this is why all my blackberry buddies are switching over to androids...

It is actually almost all of the images. It does not matter who i search for (ROOTKitty is split between some blue icon and a purple one)
|
god, that's exactly what i need, i keep checkin sc2ranks in my mobilebrowser very often gj and thanks a lot, this is awesome!!
|
I'm excited to finally see this released. After all the work you've done, and all the yelling we've done at you, it's look absolutely fantastic. Well done, Rage.
Loving the favorite star, much better than the button :p
Also, I search for myself, because I'm awesomely narcissistic like that, and my profile image is he corner of four other images. I can see glimpses of four different images which all seem to meet in teh middle of where my profile picture should be. I'll try this again in a few hours to see if it's still there. This happened at 4:53PM EST April 5th 2011 and I'm using the HTC Inspire with Froyo.
|
DroidX here as well. It seems that the tilemap you're using for icons isn't working out as intended.
I haven't really done much graphical work in Java, but what I know from DirectX, the resolution on the droid is probably different and you didn't account for it in your tile size.
|
i can agree that the images are off. not on DroidX, Motorola Droid here. When I searched for myself, I didn't see my current portrait, it was a mixture of like 3 portraits (can't even tell what they are). Still pretty awesome though! =D
EDIT: possibile addition to see the custom divisions too? I know that's in the SC2Ranks API, but not sure if the mobile API is different. Keep up the good work!

that is interesting. ill have to take a look into that as all of the images on mine display correctly. i suspect it has to do with the resolution on the droid x being higher than on other devices.
|
If my emulators are anywhere near accurate, I've fixed the Portrait display problems.
I'm going to throw in a few more quick updates and then post the new version to the market.
|
Just posted the update to the Market, let me know if its fixed.
|
I was under the impression that the API is not to be used for mobile applications?
From http://sc2ranks.com/api You cannot use the data in mobile applications (websites with mobile HTML versions not included).
It's part of the reason why I didn't start up a project on it.
|
Given I tweeted about it and already posted, it's probably safe to say that he has permissions :>
|
Looks pretty good. Will there be a way to eventually set some sort of default profile? Like, an easy way to view my own profile without having to sort through favorites? There's a lot of potential with this app, keep working on it.
|
Could you update it with the new medals for top 8, 25, 50 and 100?
|

They should be in there.. who are you looking at?
EDIT:
I found the bug. I'll fix and update now.

Eventually, I probably will have that. I want to get the Division stuff done first though.

AWESOME! Thank you for this app, downloading it now on my Motorola Droid!
|
It works great now. Good work. Great turnaround on the updates.
|
Works great on xperia arc.
Thanks a lot for this!

Sweet app, works great on the x10.
To the above poster, damn your arc T_T

hey there,
I just downloaded the app for my Nexus One, everything looks good. Weird to find another Mamuto on the North American server... dunno if that's normal or not.
One thing I'd suggest, for the Rankings section, maybe make individual people a little smaller? Theres only 3 at a time on my screen, and a lot of empty space. I think you can condense and maybe add wins and wins/losses for masters.
Other than that, everything loads fast, I like that.
Would love to see graphs but I understand its hard to do, no pressure there.
Well done.

I plan on reworking some of the views to make them a bit easier to read/more functional. Hopefully Ill get to it soon >.>

I'd love to see this on iPhone, but I'm getting an Android phone in a few months anyways so I guess I don't really mind all that much.
|
How long did it take for you to code it? Was it difficult?
|
Can you comment this on http://sc2ranks.com/api:You cannot use the data in mobile applications (websites with mobile HTML versions not included). I can write the same app for iOS, but API restrictions stops me.

On April 07 2011 03:29 isospeedrix wrote: How long did it take for you to code it? Was it difficult?
Well, I started the project in January but had to put it on hold for a few months due to school. Once I started up again, it probably took about two or three weeks to complete. It wasn't difficult but I've been working with Android for a while. Just a matter of putting in the time.

You have to message Shadowed and talk to him about it. Or you can post in the other thread to contact him.

That would be so awesome, even if it was a 99 cent app it would be worth it. I spam that site all the time.

I assumed it would be obvious from the fact that I commented and the app itself, but I guess not, the API page has been updated

There will probably be an iOS app by Phaded, if he changes his mind then I'll see if someone else is interested. Any mobile app will be ad free and not cost anything though.

great app mate, love it! maybe include option to compare 2 players side by side?
thanks!
|
Another +1 to the player comparison. Would love to be able to load up both players while I'm watching tournament matches.

Added that to my list of TODOs. Expect it sometime in the very broad time frame known as the "future"

|
Lovin it. Thanks RageKage
|
Posted some updates (mainly for Rankings searches).
I changed the layout because some players with long names were going onto 2 lines.
Also, I actually DON'T get the correct League information when I run a Rankings search so I had to remove the icon from that view. However, if you click on a player you'll be able to see their rank still with the proper league icon. Sorry, my bad. :S
|
Nice, just installed it. Is there a way to see/search custom divisions ?

Not yet. Hopefully I'll have that within the next few weeks. :S

i would really love a way to see the winrate(win-loss-ratio) and the stats within the top 100 list!

I love that you title your changelog as "Balance changes"

Why does this app need access to "Phone Calls -- read phone state and identity"?

On April 08 2011 01:10 [Atomic]Peace wrote: Why does this app need access to "Phone Calls -- read phone state and identity"?
I need to pass a unique ID to the server with each request. Android doesn't have a default way of doing this, so I have to pull an ID out of some parts of the phone. I found a method online to do it that requires reading something that has to do with that permission.
That's literally the only reason. :S
EDIT: I will be changing this (because I love you so much) after I finish my homework today.

If you want, you could just generate something and save it. I didn't realize that the unique ID required phone permissions on Android.

It really depends on the way you do it. I remember before I told you I'd just grab the milliseconds of the first boot but I found this online and was using it for another project and just kinda said fuck it.
The more I think about it, the more I feel like I should change it, so I'll probably do that soon and remove that permission from the app.
On another note, I fixed a bug in sorting your Favorites by Portrait. Why you would ever want to sort by Portraits I do not know, but it now works. Whoever had the app crash on them when doing that, I'm sorry.
And to the person who gave me 1 star for no reason, I have only 1 thing to say to you: ='(

I've noticed that some people have their character codes hidden. why is this? (I looked up a friend who is considered "pro") does it hide pro player CC's?

Some people don't have their character codes returned from the server. If Shadowed is still around, perhaps he can shed some light on the subject.
I serve the character code if I get it.
|
Blizzard removed the ability to get character codes, so anyone who changed their name or was added to SC2R after early November, I want to say, won't have a character code.
I wouldn't display it actually, I pass it back for legacy mostly, but since it's inconsistent it's less confusing to just hide it for everyone.

Interesting. If I remove it some people might get upset. Then again, if I keep it, you have a point of it being inconsistent. Decisions decisions :S. I'll probably have to remove it, like you said, just to keep things consistent.

I can't seem to get that code to work. It comes up as market://search?q=pname:com.sc2ranks
I then get "there are no matches in Android Market for the search: pname:com.sc2ranks
I have tried searching for sc2ranks and sc2 ranks as well as more general terms but couldn't locate it. any idea what I am doing wrong?
Thanks,

Huh that's strange.. both the barcode and those search queries come up for me. What version of Android do you have? I think the app is only available for Android 1.5 or later so if you have an earlier version it might not work :S
What kind of phone do you have?

it is called an alcatel OT-980A
Kernel version 2.6.29

That's interesting. It looks like everything is compatible with your phone. I honestly don't know what to tell you, I don't know why it isn't popping up for you. :/
The Android Market has been having some bugs recently (at least, that's what I've read), so maybe that's it? Other than that, I'm really sorry that I can't help. Have you ever experienced anything similar to this behavior? (i.e. not being able to find an app)

Not really, but I just got the phone a month or so ago. I don't think the viewing area is as large as some. Thanks for looking into it, I probably just have some wired phone version that dislikes certain apps. I just wish they told me why it wasn't compatible.
Thanks for your time.

Just patched the app so that it no longer uses READ_PHONE_STATE or ACCESS_WIFI_STATE.
In addition, this will likely be the last patch for at least several days (depending on the time I have). I'm going to be implementing a side-by-side comparison for teams and possibly making some other UI tweaks.
Feel free to post in this thread with more suggestions, bugs, etc. during this time.
PS: Hopefully I didn't break anything with this latest update. If I did, I am truly very sorry :S

This implementation is actually better, so it will remain this way.

This might be a bug:
I can't update the application. It downloads the updates from the android market but does not apply them. To get a new version I have to delete the application and then get a fresh copy (which erases your favorites).

Weird, that might be an error on my part. Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?

I'm using an HTC Inspire with Froyo and I can update it alright. Everything seems to be in order for me after I update.

Don't worry about the update though. It was a minor thing and the next one around will clear it right up.

Good job for you're app, If I may suggest you something, you could save the state of the favorite profiles to see them if Internet isn't available. I'm not really into android development, but maybe you could save the view somewhere for further uses.

My Wildfire seems unable to find the app on the market, even using the barcode.

I could, but isn't the point to see the most up-to-date information about the player? I don't see how caching would be very useful if the mentality is "I'd like to see where I am on the ladder as of this moment".
Otherwise, I'm glad you enjoy it. :D

Someone else was having a problem of not being able to find it. I'm really not sure why. It should be compatible for Android 1.5 or higher (I think it was 1.5, could be 1.6) and I didn't do anything weird with the compatibility. :S

Blackberry version perhaps?

Just to argue my point : Because I don't have internet all the time, I can't use you're app to show somebody my ranking. Actually, it is more a functionnality for the other person, not for the owner of the app itself. And I can understand it is not the goal of you're app, and you have perfectly the right to say so.
Hope this post can help you a little bit

There's a little star below their name on their page. Press that so that it is orange.

A fair point. I'll think about it (will probably put it in in some form in the end) but its not on my top priorities right now. Thanks for the feedback :D

Just to let you guys know, the compare functionality is almost done. Hopefully it'll be out tonight or tomorrow. The update will also include the 3 new portraits and the ability to view Grandmaster rankings.

Just uploaded the update. Let me know how everything is working.

Not sure if it's just on my end, but when I search 3v3 / 4v4 random, I end up getting 3v3 / 4v4 teams. I've tried searching both, teams and random and the app just shows teams.

Nice catch! I uploaded a fixed version.

Anybody got any specific feature requests?
I have midterms coming up but I'd love to hear what you guys want to see in this.
|
Sorry I've been gone a while, midterms and school and lions and tigers and bears oh my.
Just uploaded bug fixes for everything that appeared in my nifty market console. Sorry it took so long but if you gave me a bad review you can go change it now :D
Also added a default profile and a way to default a team page loading when you click specific characters.
Let me know if there are any issues/comments!

I have midterms coming up but I'd love to hear what you guys want to see in this. I think it would be really nice to show some basic information before selecting a team.
It would be nice to be arranged like SC2Ranks.com, such that I can see the league, [region] rank, wins/loses (maybe not all of it, but something) before actually going into detail.
I don't know how bad it would be to set up, but if you could make a 'summary' page like the in-game Profile that showed the 1v1 rank and highest rank of 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 all on the same page... that would be a great new way to show the Profile tab.

I think I can make a summary page like that. I'll probably just replace the Profile tab and include all that info into that page too (or something).
Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I won't be able to get to this feature for like a week (final exams) so don't expect it immediately.

I'll try to get to the crashing issues caused by the newest update tonight (for anyone who actually reads this >_> )

Have the app and like it a lot. (Was quite nice watching my league at the end of Season 3 while I was on vacation away from a computer.) Thanks for the hard work!

Hopefully that update fixed it.
