I received an email last night from Blizz saying my SC2 account pw was changed in the account manager; I did not however change it. Now when I try to log in, my password is invalid.

I logged in for the first time in over a month a few days ago without playing any games. Was in two chatrooms, one being Reddit. I also chatted to someone on my buddy list. Besides that, I did not do anything and logged off after 5 minutes.

How does Blizz handle these cases? What are the chances of me getting my account back?

How did I fall for a fake email when my password was in fact changed? Or did you mean something else?

Just email blizzard, you have 100% chance of getting your account back if you provide the necessary information. You can also look on https://us.blizzard.com/support for more info and help.

It could has been a lot of thing. For example a keylogguer, a fake blizzard email that you responded to, etc. Best thing you can do is just run an anti virus.

Some malware installs keyloggers that specifically target battle.net accounts. Most likely, your account has been used to set up a WoW free trial that's being used to spam or facilitate gold selling or account theft.

First thing to do is get your machine cleaned up. Buy a reputable, up to date antivirus package and scan the fuck out of it.

After that, your best bet is to call Blizzard's account services and follow their instructions. Since you clearly do not play WoW on this account, it will be pretty simple to get your account restored. I'd suggest getting a hardware authenticator or using one of Blizzard's free authenticator phone apps.

What he means is that on the Battle.Net site, there's a "download free WoW trial" button that lets you play for 10 days or some such nonsense. They probably put that on your account for whatever reason, probably advertising gold selling or whatever.

The fake email he discusses always looks like it comes from a legit source, but a good rule of thumb is that if you can click on a link to "confirm/change/whatever" your battle.net account from within the email, its fake (Blizzard emails NEVER have a direct link to battlenet, you have to go to a browser and find it yourself).

Maybe I accidentally clicked on it, but I was never interesting in the WoW free trial.

You said it asks for your bnet account and password? No way I can accidentally type in my bnet account and password for a WoW free trial. Maybe I accidentally clicked on the link, but that's all that would happen in a mistake.

i would stop worrying about how they got it, and focus on contacting blizz to get your account back, and to prevent it from happening again (blizz will recommend the authenticator)

What probably happened was that someone got a hold of your email.
They then sent you a message that "your password was changed", and instead of directing you to blizzard's site, they redirected you to a site that looks just like blizzards site, but the difference is once you log into the site, you give them your password.

Whether or not you play WoW, an authenticator will greatly reduce the likelihood of this happening in the future.

My comment about the "free trial" is that there's a systematic practice of stealing battle.net accounts and THEN attaching a WoW free trial to them to use them for spamming in-game if they do not already have an associated WoW account. You do not have to play WoW or have ever touched the game for your battle.net account to have value to these people.

BTW, there are really only three ways that your account can be stolen. Logging in to your battle.net account in response to a fraudulent email is one. Being keylogged is another. Third, it's possible that if you use the same email address and password for other services on the web, some untrustworthy site sold your email/password pair and this was used to get access to your account.

Hope that helps in identifying anything that may have happened on your end so that you can ensure it doesn't happen again.

This 100% happened to me, apparently somebody brute force a bunch of accounts somehow, but ya just change your password again, they don't have your email (your password would never have been sent there). Yes some people lose their account through stupidity or their email getting hacked. Your sc2 account can also get hacked. They will not compensate you for the inconvenience, but they will tell you to get blizzard authenticator. This might even still just be people trying to get into wow accounts and getting SC2 as a result, but this is a real thing, be careful guys and make sure your account is an email you check so you can actually find out if you get hacked.

Screenshot or copy the email you got please.

Accounts don't get really 'hacked' any more these days 99;9% of the case people claim being hacked they were actually being phished.

your friend (or at least his account) and another account were dumping games to each other, im surprised the account isnt banned because i know a bunch of people reported it

its odd that somebody who is dumping games on a hacked account would go to all the effort of unlocking all the portraits for him tho...

If you can show proof that you own the account, it's so easy to recover.

I've had a bnet account and played wow since 2006 till 2010 , and never got my account hacked once. There are alot of scam e-mails, before you click any of the links in the email, be sure to hover on the link and check the adress, it will usually have weird words like bliiizard or bntlnet shit like that, really easy to detect.
Another thing you can do if you dont want to bother checking if every email you receive from "blizzard" is the real deal, you can just make a brand new e-mail account and link it to your bnet account, that way you'll have a spam free e-mail adress just for your bnet account.

The best free scans out there for keyloggers are spybot search & destroy and ad-aware plus, i know this because i have alot of friends who got hacked and this worked for them, getting an authenticator also works ;p .

In case you wish to recover the account and you dont have any acess to it, just send a copy of your passport/national ID to blizzard (talk to them on the phone first) and they will reset your password/email whatever instantly. If you contact them by e-mail the process is much much slower but still doable however.
Never Regret anything because at one time it was exactly what you wanted.

No, they SAY they're redirecting you to the proper site, but they really don't. I'll quote a spam email I got that looks correct (even from Blizzard@battle.net)

had a similar experience, it's just that I lost both my SC2 AND WoW account at once (being they're both tied to the same email account). Anyways just contact blizzard and they'll help you out eventually.

Spoofing an email address happens fairly often. You shouldn't base your level of trust on that.

Regarding spoofing, I had a VOIP server and I used to prank my friends. You can enter whatever caller ID you want . I know, shame on me!

Personally I haven't, but if you know someone who has or it ends up happening to you; what you want to do is call or email blizzard and if you answer their questions and provide the necessary information they will change it back for you and email it to you at a safe email address. I think they will ask for your product code so its smart to keep the starcraft box and instruction booklet/manual.

phishing, basics of social engineering. When u get that kind of mails, u have to be allways suspicious. Hower over a link and if it's not the proper link don't click it.

You can spoof any email you want if you have a mail server. The sending address is just a field that can be filled in that can anything.

If you spoof an address it just means that any 'reply' will go to that address.

My Account has been hacked too. Since you need to have a keylogger on your computer follow the steps on blizzards support site. Schould remove any relevant keyloggers. If you call Blizzards free support they should provide the link to their keylogger site.

I personally reanstalled my computer to be sure everything is removed. Since there are hackers that are not only intrestet in wow accounts, an almost removed logger can be really painfull.

This is probably your problem here. Especially if you have a yahoo/google account.

Happened to me back in beta and it was a replay site. They ended up making a trial wow account and it got banned first day it was active.

I am pretty smart with computers, but, not so smart with email security. I now have a seperate email for things that are tied to money, like gaming, paypal, etc.

I had my acc hacked.I received the email from Blizz saying that if changed the password.I didn't payed attention to it mostly (i tought it was one of the "click to go to a fake blizz site") and when i logged in the evening i couldn't use my acc.I managed to retrieve it,using one of the game's code (it was the Wotlk i think).

My best friend advised me to write my pass on a .doc file and using copy+paste to paste it when i want to log it.That was trojans or other spyware can't steal it(they only can if u type it).

Theoretically, a virus can just as easily sneak into your clipboard though.

A couple of days ago I went to bed at like 00:10 and when I woke up the next morning I checked my mail and saw this email from blizzard that someone had changed my password right after I went to sleep (the mail had been sent at 00:15 or something). The wierd part is that I had the same password on battle.net as my email and all my other stuffs but nothing else than my bnet account was hacked which seems a bit strange. He didnt even log in to my account on Starcraft. I think it just was some kind of bug, or possibly the worst hacker in the world.

Anyways, I just went to lost password on battle.net and answered my secret question and renew my password and I had my account back in 5 sec.

Little update:

Received an email (and link) from Blizz when I woke up this morning and I was able to retrieve my account back. Strangely, there was no activity on my account during the time my pw was changed.

I received this email from blizzard,
it was about suspicious activity, and they just voided my password,

I went to the bnet site manually, and couldnt log in.
so I had to reset it in order to get in.

Its good that they were on the ball like that.

Due to suspicious activity, the Battle.net account [my email address] has been locked. To restore access to this account, please follow these steps:

Step 1: Secure Your Computer

In the event that your computer has been infected with malicious software such as a keylogger or trojan, simply changing your password may not deter future attacks without first ensuring that your computer is free from these programs. Please visit our Account Security website to learn how to secure your computer from unauthorized access.

Step 2: Secure Your E-mail Account

After you have secured your computer, please create a new password for your e-mail account since it may also be compromised. Be sure to check your e-mail filters and rules and look for any e-mail forwarding rules that you did not create. For more information on securing your e-mail account, visit this Support page.

Step 3: Choose a New Password

You must change your password in order to resume using this Battle.net account. Please click this link to choose a new password:

https://www.battle.net/account/support/password-reset.html

*Note that your former password no longer grants access to Battle.net account management, World of Warcraft, or any other login-protected Battle.net account service.

If you still have questions or concerns after following the steps above, feel free to contact Customer Support at http://eu.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_GB&articleId=22330.

Havent read most of the replies, but this happened to a friend about a week ago. He got hacked; his password was changed, and got the blizz email. However he was able to recover his account using his name and security question, and when he checked his match history there was nothing suspicious. Anyways, strange but no harm done I guess.

Good luck though!

A couple weeks ago I did get hacked, they couldn't get into my email though, thank god. Got it sorted out by blizzard and now I've got an authenticator for my keychain. Well worth the 6/7 bucks, gives me a lot more peace of mind.
