I use the grid layout and use the following control groups:
1: CC 2: rax 3: marines (or m+m) 4: tanks or marauders 5: vikings 6: medivacs 7: initial scout, drop group 8: starport 9: ghost
I remapped 1-2, 8-9 to the thumb buttons on my mouse (g700). Pretty natural feel.
I also remapped the space bar as ctrl, and the tab and caps lock keys as shift. Limits the distance my fingers have to travel.

I know you're being bombarded with numbers but here is a simple and effective style:
For people who like to have units lined up at 1 2 3 for some reason (I think this stems back to BW) 1: WHOLE ARMY 2: Doesn't have to be anything 3: Doesn't have to be anything, can be unit producing structures 4: CCs 5: All unit producing structures
For this setup you CTRL click whatever unit you want either on the battlefield or the icons in the bottom middle of the screen. Say banelings come to hit you, you stim all of your marines/marauders and ctrl click your marines to micro only them.
Setup for SC2 that makes most sense to me: 1 CCs 2 Unit producing structures 3 WHOLE ARMY 4 Anything or nothing 5 Anything or nothing 6 Anything or nothing
As for the unit producing structures you tab through them to make the units you want

1. By putting all CC on one control group, 4 for example, I assume that I will be able to use scan/mule/supply drop from the energy of the second CC if the first one is out of energy?
CC main: not 50 energy
CC expo: 50+ energy
I have been putting new CCs on separate control groups but that is quite inefficient if the answer to the above is yes.
2. I notice no one has SCVs for building supply/production factories as control groups. I usually keep 2 SCVs for building supply when needed (on 0) and 3-4 SCVs for production facilities (on 9).
Do you guys just F-key to your main and click SCVs when you need to build stuff or...? Or do you keep SCVs on standby and F-key a passive SCV (I've changed my F-keys but I think that used to be the F1 key).
|
Lets say your main have 200 energy and your expo have 200 energy and you have all of your CCs in one group.
You call down 4 mules at your expo, your expo will now have 0 energy and your main will have 200 energy.
You call down 4 mules at your main, your expo will now have 200 energy and your main will have 0 energy.
You move your army to the middle of the map and use 4 scans to kill DTs, your expo will now have 0 energy and your main will have 200 energy. (assuming the expo is closer to the middle of the map)
Is this significant? Im not sure...

if you use F keys you can still do that

1-infantry 2-tanks 3-medivacs+ravens 4-vikings 5- ghosts or hellions 6-production buildings 7-command centres
|
My hotkeys are 1 for main army 2 for medivacs or ghosts or tanks or what ever i feel neccessary. 3 I use for other units as well. 4 is CCs 5 raxes 6 facts 7 ports and 8,9,0 i use for misc.
|
I played around with custom hotkeys a little bit and here is my setup.
1-5 for army ` (tilde key) building scv's alt+1 (was 7) for all barracks alt+2 (was 8) for all factories alt+3 (was 9) for all starports alt+` (tilde key) for all CC's
alt+f2-f4 to set screen hotkeys f2-f4 selects screens
this way all my macro is set on alt+ keys to easily cycle through. now to build units i use grid keys. i find this much easier to move between qwert while macroing than moving across the entire right side of the key board. i still have unit abilities set to their normal hotkeys (stim = t and so on). Hope this gives you some ideas.

hm, didn't blizzard add save screen to SC2?
|
I Set my self up like this. 1-Light units (Marines/hellions) 2-Mech units(thors/Tanks) 3-Air-Vikings 4-AirSupport-Ravens/medvacs in late game TvT 4 becomes BC's 5.Unit Producing Structers 6.CC's 7-0 Nothing. Camera key F2 Upgrade Center Mech Camera key F3 Upgrade Center Bio
I mainly play mech terran and this works for me quite well.

Print Screen.

I play Terran.
1 CCs 2 Production 3 MMM/Special 4 Tanks/Special 5 Ghosts/Special
The only key element is where you put your CCs and production. I prefer CCs on 1 and production on 2.
|
I personally do this
1 Hellions/infantry 2 Mech units 3 Air units or ghosts, or if I'm in a pinch for hotkeys whatever 4 Barracks 5 Factories 6 Main CC 7 Starport 8 Usually my 4th base 9 My nat 0 My 3rd
I've got larger hands than most people so reaching for 7 is still comfortable and 9 isn't much of a stretch. I keep my CCs on different hotkeys because I find it easier to managed the energy and scv production than when they're all on one hotkey.

1 - army 2 - army/special units 3 - barracks 4 - starport 5 - main CC 6 - natural CC and rest of CC's 7 - factory 8-0 - individual CC/PF's
I believe this is the set IMMVP uses as well, or at least is very similar to that of his. I don't mind having my army in two control groups, but that's I'm very confident in my mouse control from playing Brood War and FPS games. However, I would recommend the following set: 1 - army 2 - auxiliary army 3 - special/more army 4 - barracks 5 - all CC's 6 - factory 7 - starport 8-0 individual CC/PF's
This set functions best when you use function keys to jump between your main, natural, and expansions instead of individual hotkeys.
|
1 - Command centers 2 - Production facilities 3 - Upgrades 4 - Bio/Core units 5, 6, 7 - Tanks/Vikings/Other units (spellcasters, etc.) 8, 9, 0 - Kept open in case of need
|
I use :
1. Army 2. Harass unit 3. Scout/Harass unit 4. All production facilities 5. CCs 6. Engibay/armory 7. 8. 9. Tanks 0. Vikings
9 and 0 are bound the additional buttons on my mouse, If you have them i recommend using this technique
|
Good for macro and large army control:
5 all CC/OC/PF 4 Rax/Fact/Port 3 Harassment (drops, hellions, reapers) 2 Specialty unit (siege tanks, ghosts, vikings) 1 All units/meat units only (Marine/Marauder)
Also use Cam positions (rebind to Shift F2-F4 to set, and F2-F4 to jump to) F2 Main F3 expo F4 2nd expo

But, I never knew you could scroll through production buildings all in the same group with Tab... I'll prolly try to switch to this. It seems a lot easier to keep track of everything and uses less groups.
(^ Noob Terran. Been Terran for like a week, so take mine with a grain of salt..)

mine 4 -CCs 5 - Raxs 6 - Factories 7 - Starports
when i remember to i use 1-3 for army stuff and 8-9 for special stuff.
|
1 CC's 2 Rax 3 Fact 4 Port 5 Army (use tab to switch between unit types) 6 Tanks (only unit i use a different group for if I have them)
That's how I do it.

It depends on the build I'm going really. Bio: 1: Main army of MMM - Vikings if I have some tanks 2: Small drop unit (used for hit and run) 3: Small drop unit (used for hit and run) 4: All Baracks 5: Vikings/air (not medivacs) - this is if I'm going pure Bio otherwise I use this for a Factory 6: Starports 7: 1st CC 8: 2nd CC 9: 3rd CC 0: a spare SCV so I get and use an SCV a bit faster
When going Mech all my buildings are the same and the same with SCV's (the main reason is because of muscle memory which makes it hard to remember to hit 4 for Factories when I'm so use to them being 5. 1: Fast units like hellions 2: Slow units like tanks and thors 3: Air units
of course I'd say it comes down to ur own preference. also dont worry if u screw up a lot when trying to change hotkeys or control groups. i screwed up a lot when i went from just one blob to multiple groupings for one army b/c of muscle memory. just practice and eventually ull get it
