Hey all,
Lately I have gotten back into Starcraft 2 and while I am still learning hot-keys, lately my biggest concern is how to assign my control groups. I was hoping someone here could either Link me a guide or if you guys have some personal preferences i'd love to hear them! Thanks in advance,

A very standard way to do it is put your CC's on 5 and above, 4 for your production facilities (tab in between barracks, factories, starports), and 1, 2, 3 for your units (3 control groups). Other hotkeys can be used for upgrades or expansion locations.

Some people stack there CC's on 4/5 Is there an advantage to stacking over having them on seperate groups?

when on 2 bases, its nice to cycle them sometimes. but with all of your bases on one hotkey, you can call down mules/scans really easily without worrying so much about balancing the energy of each CC.

1 as all units
2 marine/marauder for stim
3 ghosts or ravens or medivacs etc
4 vikings or banshees or something
5 command center
6 scouts or upgrades
7 scouts or upgrades
8 all barracks
9 all factory
0 all starport

I stack because I'm lazy, if you don't stack, you can swap between the bases easier.

I don't see any advantage from putting them into different groups.
My control groups are: 1 - Whole Army 2 - Special Units (Raven/Tanks/Ghosts) 3 - All CCs/PFs/OCs 4 - All Barracks 5 - All Factories 6 - All Starports

//edit: Why do you put anything even on 7-0 ? I want to reach everything with my left hand which is on WASD most of the time. Even 5 and 6 are sometimes hard to reach fast.

I see , tha makes more sense now. Thanks alot all!

Use one group to stack, you can reserve other hotkeys for quickly getting to that base location (or you can use the F hotkeys for that)
|
1 cc's 2 barracks 3 starport and factory's 4 units 5 special units
|
Also, is i preference as to what kind of hotkeys you use? Is grid better than standard?

The advantage of course is being able to micro multiple groups, rather than having one giant blob. This lets you do things like retreat your hellions without stopping all bio from shooting, or even do a multi-pronged attack or a flank. One control group is certainly easier but certainly worse, in my opinion.
Of course, you could always select these fast-moving units in the middle of a battle while enemy units are all over and around them, and constantly update f-keys to save cameras in enemy bases as you drop. That sounds like a winning strategy :/
Personally I use 1-4 for my army, 5 for all production facilities, 6 for cc's.

1 - Units 2 - Buildings
That seems like standard Terran hotkeys.
|
I put my CCs on 4, primary production buildings on 5, secondary production on 6, additional production on 7, army on 1, and microed units on 2-3.

I meant all CCs.

I like putting all my CCs on 5 so I can spam mule and use the energy of all my CCs instead of having to spam mule twice for 2 different hotkeys.
Also, keep in mind you can use TAB to cycle through your production buildings so if you have 3 rax,3 facs, 3 starports on 4. You would hit 4 and have the barracks production tab, hit tab and your at the factory production tab, hit tab again your at the starport production tab.
I personally like having all CC on 5, and all production on 4 since I can hit 5 make sure I have scvs building and spend all my CC energy, hit 4 and I can see all my production buildings are making stuff by the white dots.
My 1-3 vary depending on the matchup but generally its infantry, mech, air for 1-3. I wish I had a spot for ghosts/ravens I use 6 for them currently but imo 6 is too far away for a fast emp/fast PDD which can determine games.
|
I'm weird.
1 - bio 2 - mech 3 - CC 4 - air 5~7 - special units 8 - rax 9 - fact 0 - starports
|
the only disadvantage of stacking all CC in 1 hotkey is when you want to lift one you accidentally lift all your CCs Nevertheless its better coz you can train scv on all CC or use up all energy for scan or mules
|
I use: 1- CC (all of them) 2- Scout (lategame can be special units/scout) 3- Ground units 4- Air Units 5- Barracks 6- Factory(s) 7- Starport(s)

Do you use your right hand to use they hotkeys? I can't reach anything right to 6 with my left hand quickly enough and 6 is hard sometimes, too.
