I'll play more much more than 10 ladder games before considering how good a player I am. Since im currently bronze having only played 9 games, im happy to just ask questions and not answer them for quite a reasonable period.

I play one build order over and over and just about manage to win games so far. main reason I dont post much is since I dont really know what im talking bout yet :D

dunno why everyone is obsessed with bw ranks and have to say that 99% of diamond sucks lol. diamond is still around top 5% or something. If you are 2k diamond and want to compare it to BW and say you are d- or whatever, why can't you just give a fuck about sc2 and play bw instead and boost your e-penis

seems like this whole topic is just noobs that try to brag "im 700 gold but I beat a 1200 diamond so every diamond 1200 sucks", or nonames from bw that are afraid that new sc2 players wont know how gosu they were in bw.

edit: sry by the last part, just read the last 2 pages and random posts, some people in here actually seems clever, but this topic is @lol

I was a pretty high diamond in the first three weeks of the game. I reached slightly more than 1000 points and I was ranked pretty high (as in maybe top2000 :p). However, I was complete shit and did nothing but mass viking in every single match-up. I constantly got supply blocked and lacked in scouting. After three weeks I realized I had to choose between playing or watching SC (due to time limits) and opted for the latter. Now whenever I try to play I get smashed in every match up and my mass viking mass doesn't work anymore, haha. What I'm trying to say is that being in Diamond does not, by any means, determine you as a good player, so I agree with your points.

I have to say that the pendulum swings both ways on this topic.

I am a pretty poor 1v1 player, 'the casual 900 point player', but I have to admit my knowledge of the game is pretty above average.

I watch every GSL, I know timings down to the wire, stuff like that, I just don't practice enough to execute that knowledge on the ladder.

My point being, don't assume that every mediocre diamond player does not have an understanding of the game.

I think saracen is looking at it from too narrow of a view. You could say that qualifying for gsl doesn't mean anything doesn't mean anything either if someone has zero chance of winning. When I see diamond players compared to non diamond I can definitely tell the difference most the time. I can't always tell the difference from silver to platinum though,

Now that the game has been out for awhile and we have the masters league, how would you map iccup ratings to sc2 leagues when relating player skill back to bw?

Mine:

Mid Platinum and below: E
High platinum/ low Diamond: D-
mid-high Diamond: D
Masters:
0 - 1500: D+
1500-2300: C-
2300-3000: C
3000-3400: C+
3400-3600: B-
3600-3800: B
3800-4000: B+
4000+: A-. Some of these people would give GSL code A contenders a run for their money / beat them. I'm disregarding the code S level players that fall into this category; namely, a few foreigners and the code S/some code A koreans.

I clustered ranks more tightly towards the top because it seems like competition gets more fierce very quickly at those levels. E.g., I think the difference in level of play between 3000 masters and 4000 masters is much, much larger than the difference between a bronze leaguer and a diamond leaguer.

I'd say you're being a little generous- im 2900 masters and I'm terrible, deff not C level. You're prob not far off, though.

I'd backcalculate the rankings based on Grandmasters being A/A+ level. I'd also like a way to account for point inflation. My scheme is completely arbitrary, but because my ranking is percentage based its really easy to adjust to what you think is more suitable.

So:
A-A+: Grandmaster (any points)
A-: 95-100% Masters peak point pool (for example if peak Masters = 4000 points, A- players are 3600-4000 points)
B+: 90-95% Masters
B: 80-90% Masters
B-: 70-80% Masters
C+/C: 60-70% Masters
C- :50-60% Masters
D+: 0-50% Masters
D: Top Diamond
D-: Mid Diamond
E: Low Diamond

Platinum and below lack enough experience to rank on iCCup rating scale IMO.

This is assuming that as rank increases, the players devotion to # of games played and personally hammering out timings against almost every potential opposing build order increases. The overall knowledge of the game increases by a large margin with each jump in rank.

You just can't map SC2 rankings and ICCUP rankings together. ICCUP punishes losses much more heavily than SC2. In SC2, players that mass game will have a much higher ranking than those that don't because you aren't punished for losses as much. Combine this with the fact that in ICCUP, the higher you go, the harder it gets to stay up, you lose more points for losing the higher rank you are.

There is also overlap between each league. Top of the previous league is usually much better than the bottom of the more advanced league, e.g A lot of top Diamond players can easily keep up with mid-masters.

Basically SC2 ranking is no where near as reflective of skill level as ICCUP is.

I dont understand where people get those weird comparisons in sc2 leagues and bw leagues.

They are totally different game, and the skill is differently placed. There can not possibly be any comparison, or if you do that, then it is purely imagined.

Good post, however I think you give each level too much credit.

Bronze: I hit find match button, what's that do?
Silver: I know how to select units and make them attack.
Gold: I have a general idea on how to play an rts game.
Platinum (not stuck-in-platinum-because-stupid-system-won't-promote-me but actual platinum): I have a loosely followed build order.
Diamond: Anything above that.

I think you give far too little credit but i assume your joking, even bronze players know build orders to a certain extent and there are some bronze players who have played 1500+ games and arent portrait farmers, they defenetly know how the game works after 1500 games their execution is probably just sub par.

I am in platinum (belong there not stuck there) and i think it is a very under rated league their are some quality players in platinum IMO i mean i dont think low level diamond is much different from platinum at all i get matched up against low lvl diamond all the time and it is quite even, but if it puts me up against any mid diamond player i get stomped.

I think it's probably important to note that that post is half a year old at this point and players have gotten a lot better across all levels since then.
i am a logical person.

LOL thankyou for bumping this thread. i knew the name "saracen" was familiar. i got him on ladder yday and i was like "why is ur name familiar" and he was like "why is ur name familiar" pesudo-trolling me. then i smashed him. so i wonder what level player saracen was in bw... hes 3700 masters on NA server. i guess in bw language that means D-? lol jk. i'm assuming b-a.

Bronze league definetly has big differences in skill level, afterall it is the first league.

But people often undervalue, what bronze league player knows. They often know alot of things, but their execution is poor. And nowadays, it is alot harder to advance in leagues than it was 6 months ago. You need to be a very solid and good average player to even get in platinum league.

I just want everyone to know here that the elitism should probably stop.

I was D-/E in BW (flirted with the line a lot, but never used the antihack, so more like solid D-)

I placed into silver, and belonged there...

I'm diamond now, but still...

I think it looks more like this

Bronze-Gold: E
Platinum: D-
Diamond: D to D+
Masters: C- to B+
Future Grandmasters league: A- to Olympic

There is no such thing as "E-" in starcraft 2.

I don't think he meant SC2 but he meant ICCup rankings.

Strange.. I just read the opening post and the last 10 pages.
From the opening post its seems like the topic is about forum discussions and players using their rating and not their arguments as a legitimation to tell other players with lower ratings to shut it.

From the last 10 pages It seems like its about mapping ratings or elitism..

Really, really strange.
It really tied the room together.
