But some of the achievements are bad, will be hard to get if you quickly reach a high rank, or are downright silly (1000 wins against AI? WHAT). Some are hits, some are misses.

This is the harm. You have to play around idiots who are screwing off just to get achievements. I imagine the problem will be lessened in StarCraft as opposed to some other games, but it will still be annoying to have people doing stupid BS just for an achievement. PS. trying to gain achievements doesn't make you a bad player, just wanted to clear that out of the way. =)

but yes, it is annoying - there should be an option to disable IN GAME NOTIFICATIONS FOR NEW ACHIEVEMENTS, and rather it would show after you quit the game (maybe in a new tab or something listing new achievements)

I don't understand what the big deal against achievements are. If you don't care about them, that's completely fine. Just ignore them. Why would you want to take away a feature that someone else might enjoy? Particularly if it's something that doesn't affect you either way... It's not like they're going to be popping up in the middle of your screen every single game or something either. It seems to me that a lot of the achievement are actually a bit strange and many of them would never occur in a normal game. These kinds of achievements really bother me as I feel that you shouldn't have to rig a game for the specific purpose of getting those achievements. I feel that achievements, if they are implemented, should always be things that could practically be done in a perfectly normal game and certainly more points should be given as the difficulty goes up. Achievements against the AI seems pretty lame and a waste of time for the most part. I do hope they could add some achievements that might be more meaningful to the competitive gaming community, despite the fact that so many of them are against it. I certainly think achievements for win streaks in ladder matches (random matchmaking) is a great idea and it could help encourage people to improve their play and strive harder to do better. These achievements certainly would be much harder to rig since you can't decide on your opponent beforehand. They could also add some achievements for attaining and maintaining certain ELO ratings in randomly matched games. I am personally of the belief that achievements can certainly be a fun and meaningful addition to the game when implemented correctly. Obviously when you have achievements that require you to play in a certain way just to get them, it makes them much less relevant, but so long as you create achievements that are organic in that one will naturally achieve them one by one while playing normally and improving their play, it can become a great way to encourage people and reward them in a small way for their dedication and effort. That having been said, I do believe we need more achievements of this variety, that will enhance the competitive community. And yes, Achievement notifications should show up AFTER a game when you're in the lobby or something...

Perhaps this is what a lot of you are looking for? The harm is that developers' time is wasted on ways to trick you into playing the game more instead of just making it better (yes, I really want chat rooms). If they introduce the achievements after several years then perhaps I would have said that it's a good idea but for now it is not. It is just a cheap trick that shouldn't really be a part of something as awesome as StarCraft.

See how easy it is to influence kids these days. Put a colorful badge saying good job and they will be thinking about it the entire week.
