Smart search/matching system makes it easy to find Practice Partners and Team Members by finding suitable players based on your preferences.
Practice Partner and Team Member Finder Web Application aka SC2PlayerFinder at: www.sc2pf.com
Current Features
- To use the system, enter in your profile information (SC2 name, server, race, skill level, have mic, age group, comments...), search preferences and preferred playing times.
- The system will then display a list of matches with highest scored matches displaying first.
Let me know if there is any feature you want me to add. Or if you find a bug, spelling error or something.

I'll wait until the non-gmail support comes out. But this sounds fantastic man! thanks.
|
|
Cool, I joined up, hopefully this will become popular so players of all skill levels can become good.
|
You know the difference between "application" and "thread" right?
|
yeah this seems like a really useful app. nice work :D

On June 21 2010 14:18 TheAngelofDeath wrote:I'll wait until the non-gmail support comes out. But this sounds fantastic man! thanks.
I should have that working by the end of the day. Along with an option to not display your email address.
|
I signed up and really hope it takes off. I feel I've developed my skills as far as possible from ladder play alone so far and really need consistent practice partners to take myself to the next level. Being new to the SC community has made it difficult to find partners of equal skill level as most seem to involved with teams and/or have networks of their own friends/clanmates to rely on. Hopefully others in the same position as me sign up.
|
I'm also hoping this takes off. I'm pretty awful and it would be pretty cool if I could become not awful.
|
So, this is awesome, and I'm bumping this solely for the sake of getting it out there so more people will use it when the beta comes back.

Very nice, but UI needs work

Yeah, the UI is an afterthought at this point. I'll be making improvements on it soon.
|
New Version.
Didn't have time to finish account creation code for Non-Gmail users, but I should be able to finish it up tomorrow.
To avoid email address farming, the match list no longer displays the email address of the matched players. Replaced the email address with a link to a form that will send a message to the matched player.
V1.0b4 - Email address no longer displayed. Contact users via a form. - Match list no longer displays users with incomplete profiles (blank SC2 Name and Comments and Time Slots) .

i really like this idea... is pretty handy. especially if they dont bring chat rooms to bnet 2.0 haha.
... if you want a nice design for the UI let me know.. i wouldnt mind doing something as beta down time is killing me. (im a creative director at a marketing company.. something simple would make this thing hit the big time!!!!)
any way. good idea. and i just used it.. works nicely if more people used it.
EDIT: only 1 result came back.. haha hence the more people. Also you may want to have a tick box for microphone users...
[ ] I have a headset and will use it in game
|
I would like to see this become more popular... I know there's a thread on teamliquid, but it is easier to do it like that... If someone in silver to gold range on eu servers needs a practice partner, contact me
Keep up the good work man!

Ahh yes the mic. I was going to add this, but totally forgot. Thanks for the reminder.
Regarding the UI, I would love to improve the design. Do you know JQuery and JSON by any chance? I'll be making small changes to the UI as I continue to add and improve features, but once I get the majority of features working, then I want to do a complete overhaul of the UI and convert it from JSP to JQuery/JSON.

It's not working for me. After I regester, it's giving me some kind of app error.\
Sounds like a great idea though, can't wait for it to start working again so I can use it!

Let me finish up some work on the inner guts of the app and when I'm ready for a UI overhaul, I'll see if you are still interested. I'm a middle/back end coder and my front end UI skills are lacking as you can see :-)
Thanks for the offer.

Thanks to everyone who has logged in and helped me test it. I'll do my best to get it working well before the next beta test.
|
just tried it out and must say this is pretty sweet, can't wait to try it out once phase 2 starts.
|
You should include practice partner rankings of some sort, so the best practice partners will rise to the top and can practice against the other elite practice partners.
|
After reading the above post I'm wondering if this will be the new ICCUP. Let's hope Blizzard keeps the map pool intersting enough to keep laddering enjoyable.
I like the idea though. I'll have to try this out when beta 2 arives.

Sorry, maybe the link was not so obvious. I changed it to bold. Would it be better if the link name was the actual URL to make it seem more obvious?
Link/URL/GOHERE ---> Practice Partner Finder Web Application

I have the local account creation code finished so it will no longer require an account that Google can authenticate (Google / OpenID). I'll activate the new version in the morning (US/Pacific).

New Version Up. It is now possible to create a local account. Google authenticated account is no longer required. However it is still recommended.

looks good so far, it will be useful if it is widely adopted, even just within TL.

nice work i'll try that out if i found enought time for practice sessions

I will add a simple field to enter location next release along with Have Mic/Voice field. In the future, I plan to add something that will use geocoding, so it will be possible to search for players within a distance, but it is not a high priority.
Once again, thanks to everyone for your positive feedback and helping test it out. Team Liquid users are amazing!

Beta V1.0b11 Now Live - Added Field Have Mic/Voice and Location - Added Field Location - Added Field and Search Filtered for Partner has Mic/Voice - Added more stuff to the email template - Removed some displays fields from the Match results listing and added Location.

I have a question, I filled out all the information.. then I submit and nothing happens. Am I supposed to see my name on the list? Or do other see it but not me?
Is it a list of all the players looking for people or is it a list of partners for your own "setup"?
Thanks

You should see other users listed, unless you made your search parameters so restrictive that no matches are found. I'll take a look at your profile and see if I can figure out why you don't get back any matches.
You show up as the 3rd best match for me.
Thanks for letting me know.
EDIT: I took a look. Your are looking for 1v1, Any Race, partner has a mic/voice, parter is diamond rank 20 and up. So far there is only 4 people that will match that. Mainly because the mic/voice option is new and most people have yet to check the have mic/voice box. Anyways. Check again and if you still don't get any results, let me know.

Should I add age groups and if so, what age groups should it be broken down into? Would it be fun to have age groups represented by units of the players primary race or is that just plain silly.
Just for fun example. Kid - Zergling / Zerg primary Teen -Hydra / Zerg primary 20-29 Stalker / Protoss primary 30-39 Maurader / Terran primary 40+ Battle Cruiser/ Terran primary

Lol I hate when this happens. I really try not to think about who I'm playing with(gender, age), but sometimes shit hits the fan, and the question gets asked: "How old are you?" FUUUUUUUUU
One time I was helping this guy with his ZvP/ZvT (in SC2) and it turned out I was playing a 12 y/o. I felt so damn awkward. 1st thing that went through my head was "am I too old for this game?:-(" LOL and then the "to catch a predator" commercial went through my head and I FUUUUUUUUUUUU'd some more.

Ranks don't mean anything. You could be #1 in division 324 diamond but still have only 1100 rating which wouldn't get you into the top 100 of an established division. When you change rank to rating this application may actually be usable.
|
I can see more uses for this App. We can use the results to possibly design a better ladder system as far as match-making and skill determination is concerned.
|
This is a very cool and very needed addition to the SC2 community, Thanks for your contribution and I cant wait to see its full success take swing once the game is out!

I'm very open to implementing a different way in which to determine skill level. In fact, this is something I'm thinking about and I hope to get some good ideas from the community like yourself.
I will be adding fields to input league, rating, number of wins and number of losses. I'll use a combination of those to determine a new rating number, however I'm still figuring out exactly how I want to do that. I'n the mean time, I just decided to create the simple 1-10 skill level. Considering the beta is down, we are sort of on the honor system with each player determining their own skill level. I do have it sectioned off so that each higher level represent a smaller percentage of players than the previous level. In other words, skill level 9 should be the top 1% of players and 10 would probably be .01% or less.
I'm all ears, I mean eyes, if someone has a good idea on how to convert Blizzard's league, rating and win/loss ratio into a better rating number. Or maybe a completely new idea on how to figure out a players relative skill level. Got an idea, toss it out there.
There are lots of ideas floating in my head that I would like to add as time goes on, so this is just the the start. I'm very open to implementing new features and changing existing features based on feedback from the users, so I encourage feedback like this.

Why would you do this? Blizzard has undoubtedly spent many hours developing their matchmaking rating system. While a player's rating may not be truthful until they've played hundreds of games, it's still far more accurate that any arbitrary combination of statistics that you could come up with.

You are right. Blizzard has put a lot of thought into their rating and matching system for ladder games. It will probably work great matching ladder players up with the larger player pool after release.
From what I understand about Blizzards system is that it may take weeks and hundreds of games for higher skilled players to hit their rating cap. However, I figure there is going to be a group of players who will spend most of their time playing custom games and not a bunch of ladder games. Using league and rating may not be a good way to measure skill level for that group of players. So what ever method is used, I would like to consider this group. as well.

V1.0b15 is live and supports age groups. There is 4 age groups (youth, teen, young adult, adult) and an option to opt out by using the unspecified age group. I can how this works if needed.

And if this is the case. You know your rating is higher than you have. Just have two fields. League and Rating. If you are lowrated and you know you are higher you will just enter a higher number.
Still more accurate than "enter your skill 1-10". And best of all. Its easy to implement.

Thanks for this! This will be infinitely useful as time goes on.

1. Separate page . 2. You should give a name to this application "PP finder" or something along those lines
Also I think your concept is really really good, It just needs to get some attention. 1. Hosting a small tournament would raise more awareness. 2. Ask Husky/HD to mention it in one of their vidoes 3. Ask Day9 to mention in one of his daily's.

Thanks for the great feedback. I'll try to come up with a name as you suggest.
Definitely would like to host some causal tournaments that players can join to get a feel for playing tournaments. Sort of like a practice tournament. Ideally, I can use the schedule related code to setup automated tournaments where the system matches up players based on the players availability and previous match results.
Speaking of Day9, he drops lots of little info bits about using a practice partners in many of his dailies, but it would be great if he did a full daily discussing the fine art of being a good practice buddy and how to make practice sessions very productive. We all know the basic of what makes a good practice session, but I'm sure there are some good ideas that are not so common knowledge. A daily that has some high level players discussing their replays of practice sessions could be very insightful.

Help would be great, especially on the front end (css, html, javascript, jquery, json). The code is a fast moving target right now, but once it settles down, I'll put it on Google Code.

I'll add that to my to do list. The time zone will be easy, however a location search won't work very well due to the way I'm currently storing the location data. Both location and time zone data need to be handled differently and I'll be reworking both of them in the future. I just did the quick way for now.

a 3 digit code is able to withstand how many accounts ? its 9^3 right ? or my maths are absolutely wrong ?

Arcalious Character Code: 563
Looks like a random number instead of sequential. Maybe this was stated, I thought it would be sequential. I liked the name identifier better as I can remember a name better than a number.
Hmm, so should I add an identifier field or should people just put name.id (Arcalious.563) for SC2 name.

I'll be adding a new feature in the next few days that should make finding equally skilled players for custom map games quick and easy. No login required and simple interface.
However, if you are looking for a good long term practice partner, then it is best to sign in and fill out all the information.
|
V1.0b28 Updated the app to support the identifier field. However, I don't really like it. Oh well.
|
V1.0b29 -Added Quick Match - On Demand feature.
Quick Match - Practice Partner On Demand. Find Players who are ready to play at this very moment. (login NOT required).
Does not have all the features the regular version does. However you don't need to login and it is about as simple as it gets.
Let me know if you like this feature?
If you didn't see the Quick Match option. Reload the page.

Thanks. 400+ have registered, but I just recently purged the DB of users that didn't fill out any profile info, so now it is around 300. As more people sign up, it will get easier to find a good fit practice partner.
Once again, thanks to the TL community (it is the best).

I really like this idea and i'm following it for a while. I can't wait to see the new UI. Do you still need some help there? It seems you are already working on it.

The site has come a long ways since the start as I have added lots of new features, however I have yet to tackle the UI which is pretty obvious :-(. My current plan is to focus on implementing a few more features and then focus on the UI. Help with the UI would be great. I think the 3 things that would help the most, banner for the top of the site, better style sheet for the tables, and a nice looking menu bar. I will of course give credit for anyone who helps and for anyone who creates a banner, they can put their sc2 name or any other name in the lower right hand corner.

Beta v1.0b41
Added a field to include Battle.net Profile URL http://beta-us.battle.net/sc2/en/profile/24464/1/ I'll use it to pull in profile information (avatar, ladder, achievements) and put it in the match listing along with a link to the profile.
Registration is no longer required to use the site. Except for messaging, until I add local private messages instead of sending emails. This is mainly to avoid someone from spamming all the users.

Beta v1.0b42
Improved UI. Not the final product, but an improvement at the least.
|
Beta 1v.0b43 -More UI improvments. -Bug fixes.
I'll soon be adding some code to pull in profile information for bnet.
Hope you all enjoyed the SC2 Beta Phase 2.

Hope I'm not violating the TL policy by creating a thread about the Practice Partner finder Web app I created. I figured it would be viewed as a benefit to the TL community vs some kind of bad self promotion, but if I'm wrong, please let me know and I'll stop posting updates to the thread. found this in a other thread. just want to say:
THX for the work. in my opinion its people like you who ARE the community. i think threads like this are the heart of TL not the ones where 200 people post over there feelings and what they love and hate on other players, commentators or gamesettings.
Little suggestion: perhaps you should add a language option. So you can choose all language you speak and not only browse throw the results and see where they come from.

Thanks for the kind word. So for the reception for the TL community has been very supportive and I appreciate it.

Good suggestion. I will add that to my to do list. I would also like to add internationalization, but I would need people willing to translate, promote and moderate for that language.
Once again, thanks for the support.

Players will probably update their info over the next week or so. I'm assuming everyone is busy playing.

Global Player Search and Ranking: - Running into cpu usage issues with my GAE instances, so I have this spread accross several ATM. Glad I didn't try to run this on the practice partner finder site. Once I get things running smooth, I'll combine them into one site. Global Player Search and Ranking - info

If you have not updated your profile since launch, please do so.

Lots of new players have signed up since release, however I noticed that most players don't take the initiative to contact other players, so I'm thinking about adding a new feature that will automatically pair players up based on their preferences. This would of course be an opt in feature. The new feature would work something like this. New player visits the site, enters URL to battle.net profile, System loads in player information from battle.net System asks the new player a few more questions (looking for 1v1 or team, have mic, time zone, preferred playing times). Then it would present a small list of players that the system has chosen. Player can then remove any player they are not interested in. Player accepts. System contacts those players and asks them to accept. After both parties except, System sends contact information to both players.
Anyways... just something I'm thinking about and would like feedback on any ways to make it better.
