This is always the first thing I think when someones says new CPU is overheating and is the number 1 problem that causes overheating. If its a new Intel Proc then is should come from factory with thermal paste pre-applied, so you would have to actually remove it to mess it up. I'm not sure about AMD Proc's. Of course its also possible its not his proc that's overheating, I would need a bit more information to diagnose the problem. I would definitely say that if the new hardware is overheating then buying a new fan would be like putting a band aid on the problem unless your doing some overclocking.

Another possibility is that he didn't clip the stock intel fan all the way into the motherboard: sometimes it takes a huge amount of pressure and force to get those clips to clip ALL the way in. If one isn't all the way in, it could cause overheating.
Also, as a note to Day9: generally, when you install a new heatsink, you need to turn your PC off every now and then to let the thermal paste solidify and cool for the first 48 hours or so (recommended by Intel). If you leave it on 24/7 for those first few days, you could screw up your cooling that way too. There's probably something about it in your heatsink instructions, but I figured I'd mention it here because no one reads those instructions anyways
also make sure that you are *sure* it's the CPU overheating. Often times it isn't, I've had the problem myself. It's tricky to diagnose if the computer is crashing in the boot sequence. As people have said, if it's a CPU overheat, it's likely any fan won't help much, unless your original fan was incorrectly installed (clips not on flush or something)
If it doesn't fix it, perhaps post a more detailed example of what's happening, I'm sure there are enough techies around here to sort you out
Gotta be the thermal paste, remember too much paste is just as bad as not enough. There is also different methods of applying the paste depending on which processor you have. Check out http://www.arcticsilver.com/intel_application_method.html I made the mistake of applying too much paste on my last build...I got it fixed though I just had to scrape it off and redo it.
I can't begin to tell you just how badly I want to see Nony's phoenix build. I missed them live and REALLY wish they were up on blip or livestream for me to watch. Seeing it work it's magic in the HDH, I really want to see what St. Plott has to say about it.

my new computer is overheating, so i had to go out and buy a zalman fan. trying to install it as we speak, so there's no way i'll be up and running in 30 minutes. sorry folks x.x
A long time lurker here. Thanks for spending enormous amounts of time doing these dailies and podcasts and whatnot. It's been really entertaining and informative for me. Hope you get your issues with streaming services and computer fixed as soon as possible!
Hey Day9, I just want to say that I watch your stream all the time right before bed. One day I didn't have time to do that and I couldn't sleep. I watched for about 15 minutes and then I crashed like a narcoleptic. You better not stop doing these or I might never sleep again. :s
this is so stupid. it's booting up, it's giving my error free boot codes on the motherboard, but my graphics card isn't displaying a damn thing. I've been working on this computer all weekend, and it's just error after error after error. 100% no cast tomorrow, and likely not tuesday. I just don't have any more energy to work on it, and then I have to go to work starting tomorrow.
Seriously worst week ever and then worst weekend ever. All I want is a pretty new working computer :[

Not possible for you ?
Day9's man card is on the line here, don't you see? You build your own computer, and it means so much more to you. When you fail, it hurts so much more. Just paying someone to do it, its almost the same as buying a prebuilt.
Anyways day, check the usual suspects. Make sure you got the right voltage rail on your GPU, make sure your jumpers are all in the right spots, make sure your ram is seated properly.
Oh yeah, and triple check everything's compatibility.
Odds are if those are all in working order, you might of gotten a bad card.
If you have time/a camera take some shots of the inside of the case. Someone here might be able to notice an issue in the settup.
I just finished watching the BGH games you posted. Honestly one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Making this a regular feature would make my life! But keep up the great work otherwise!
Have you tried updating the BIOS? There could be various compatability errors that are fixed by that. Also, I know from experience that not properly installing the CPU-fan can lead to damage on the motherboard and all sorts of problems even if the computer sometimes still runs properly. Your best bet might as well be to visit a nearby computer-company to diagnose what exactly is wrong.

Apparently not everyone is europe is friendly ^^ lol
