So far my experience is: Early game is still the same. burrow and overlord speed at hatch level don't do anything. It's one of the reason why I am still undecided if I should stay Zerg in Hots.
Mid game is really awesome, so many varieties available that won't be possible in WoL.
Late game, I actually think ultras are too strong that broodlords just aren't that desirable anymore, especially since viper supports ultras much better. Not sure if this is a positive thing because I would prefer broodlord remains to be a good viable end game unit.
I think every race has got some good new stuff to them that makes the game much more fun to play. The problem with zerg is just that the new stuff won't come out until mid game while the other two race can have a build order to get their new units out at optimal time with a specific new strategy and makes the race feels more refreshed.

Zerg are so much more fun to play against in HotS. I feel like all my support units are now a legitimate part of the game ~ chivalrous ghost/viper stand-offs, hunting swarmhosts with raven/marine packs, and epic widow mine/tank pushes. Here's to a glorious new age of TvZ.

As a Terran, the new Ultralisks scare me.

Typical Zerg game:
Step 1 - Defend the plethora of all-in's, and mid game push's / horas tactics by EVERY OTHER RACE with as minimal losses as possible Step 2 - Rage that you can't do any early game horas due to crappy map design, sim city capabilities of the other races, and new early defenses which make it impossible Step 3 - Hold off till super army / Tier 3 then go try and win, I put the word try as Skytoss is so redonkulous at the moment its a total crap shoot.
Rinse and repeat EVERY GAME.
The only exclusion to this is ZvZ but even that gets dull after a while as its the same song and dance there as well.
You're moaning at having to defend all ins just like the other races? Nice. To think that anyone is going to consider your rage-filled opinion when you cannot even spell the word harass properly. Fan boys will be fan boys. After playing SC2 WoL since beta you must be tired of the same crap. Especially Zerg players. SC2 WoL Zergs are so stream lined its stupid. You are pretty well strong handed into a set number of builds or you will straight out loose. I haven't seen much difference in HotS and feel HotS is being rushed out due to market demand or financial pressure, but hey you enjoy driving that car with 3 wheels for a year or so while blizzard tries to put on the 4th wheel.
Reliant Robins worked with 3 wheels and weren't flawed beyond use.

So far I'm not a fan of HOTS, ZvZ is as terrible as ever and ZvT feels like being raped in whole new ways by Reapers, Widow Mines and Battle Hellions while the removal of Siege Tech has reduced our possible timining attacks considerably. Terrans have just gained so many new harassment and mid-game options vs us while we've gained nothing anywhere near as useful until Hive or maybe Lair tech if you want to go All In on Swarmhost.
Ultra/Viper is amazing if you live that long tho'.
|
I'm also excited about all of the Zerg changes. Even though I'm Toss and not sure when we'll see units like the Tempest unless the Brood Lord comes back in full force, new ways for the other races to play means new ways for my race to play in response.
There's tons of negativity but that's unavoidable unfortunately.

Nice thread. Only thing I would change in the OP would be mutas. I know I won't be using them in ZvT / ZvP because of widow mines / stargate openings. But they're pretty fun in ZvZ
|
As terran I'm pretty happy with zerg right now, except for the blinding cloud. That spell is for mech as fungal is for bio...a few of those spells can make a whole army useless.

Yes, I almost completely agree with the thread starter. I think that even now, HotS is in a lot better spot than WoL, entertaining wise. I really enjoy watching HotS, and with Swarm Hosts, and without Infestors, Zerg started to feel like a Zerg again with tons of units attacking everywhere. I also like that Infestors are nerfed, but just to the point where you don't want to mass them anymore, and later in the game, you maybe want few for ITs to soak damage and Fungal, but Vipers are better casters overall. I really like where HotS is now, I watch streams and VODs everyday, and there are tons of new strategies, units compositions, I am seeing some old WoL units that have never been used before(exaggeration, but you know what I mean), like Hydras, Ravens, Reapers etc. I am really looking forward to this expansion in the whole evolution!

As a random note, I'm very curious how the 2v2 scene is going to look with all these changes. Ultra/Viper along with either AirToss or Mech seem really cool and painful to deal with. Looking forward to the new toys in retail!

The problem with zerg in HOTS is how much less possible openings you have in the early games compare to Terran and Toss. Especially against terran, they can open in so many ways. Hellbats drops, marine/tank push, widow mines, maurader/marines, reaper openings, traditional hellions/bashee etc.
The combination is almost endless. Yet, for Zerg, we have zerglings, roaches and banglings. Granted, the borrow is moved down to tier 1. It is not an active skill. It doesn't work very effective against drops and if you want to surprise the terran, you have to borrow in the right places. With the dropship with its speedy drops, it makes it very hard to predict and counter.
Once you go to mid game (tier 2), things opening up a lot more. But until then, surviving the early game, at least for me, is a challenge.

Interesting, I never really thought of it as a flying DT, but now that I think of it your right. Its a bummer they removed a lot of the old abilities it had during preview showing such as, the old building disabler or the cloaking field ability. Revelation which I get is suppose to be paired with tempests just feels way to gimmicky in my opinion.

I've been liking Zerg alot. In BW i played all three races. I ultimately picked Terran because of players like Flash who showed a nearly unbreakable Terran play. I might just pick-up Zerg especially since its turning out to be alot like it BW counter-part. Which I really like.
PvZ 1) Rush 3 Bases with 5 Hatcheries 2) Spam Hydra and Attack. 3) Expand everywhere and tech to Spell Casters

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the changes. I have to admit I'm a bit jealous, but with mech being super fun for me I think I'll find a way to manage. You also gave me a bit of insight as to the "frisbee" effect that SHosts have... I'll have to keep that in check when I hit the ladder come the expansion, as it seems logical but I haven't had anyone try it (I don't claim to be on the top of the skill charts to be fair).
Man, this post itself has me a bit hyped to see how Zergs do next month, whatever happens I'll be ready!

You should tell the Zerg pros who are 0-6 currently in MLG qualifiers how great Zerg is in HotS. One thing is for sure, we won't be seeing a lot of that fun Zerg play you're talking about at the first major HotS tournament.
