WTF amorim just got sacked
this club is a fucking joke. i do not agree with the way amorims sacking has gone down at all. what the fuck has wilcox done in his career? why are we outright backing wilcox over amorim, who to be fair has shown a lot of progress with the team? if you were going to sack amorim like this then why the fuck have we let half a season go by to do it? how is this any different from ten hags sacking?

fucking hell uniteds board are a fucking shambles

Amorim knew exactly what he was doing.
Maresca did the same, and Nuno did it to Forest earlier.
If you want your juicy payout, you have to come out against your bosses in the media.

i dont think so. i think he was being genuinely naive when he made those comments.
seemed to me like he wanted to pressure the board to give him more control over transfers and more trust in his choice of tactics, thinking that the board wouldnt pull the trigger on him because of all the public promises they made about keeping him on.
the team still has lots to improve on but its also undeniable that the team is playing WAY better than last season. whether 5th place currently is deserved or not is irrelevant, its where we are and thats a massive improvement also. doesnt seem like amorim would want to quit given the current state of the team

I think this whole transition from full managers to more of a head coach roles is also something clubs are still figuring out. Most clubs don't have existing culture on this kind of divide in power where a sporting director has a lot of say on the transfers and the manager/head coach is more responsible for working with the players and tools they're given.

Most of the time we still tend to look at the manager when the club fails to perform, no matter what kind of internal struggles and tensions are created by the surrounding club. I can see managers growing wound up and lashing out sooner or later in such environments.

It still is pretty curious that the two bigger sackings both happened right at the start of the year. It may make some difference in accounting somewhere for someone.

Yeah, I was thinking a bit broader about all kinds of contractual loyalty bonuses and such too, I probably misused the term accounting a bit there.

The problems with Manchester United's billionair board is that their expectations don't match reality. Amorim must be relieved now. He didn't intend to give up on his principles.

TBH I think United's board might be the only ones with realistic expectations.
Think about it from when Radcliffe and INEOS took over. They had two options:
a) Treat United like a sleeping giant that just needs one good season to reverse their fortunes and get themselves back into contention with the big big boys, so keep spending as if you are a top team.
b) Treat United like a team fighting for a Europa League place, realise you have to shrink the club slightly because you aren't getting the income to keep spending sustainably.

Everything that they've done from sacking the tea ladies to starting to hire a slightly lower class of manager tends to tell me they are going for option B, but the fans can't accept it. The fans still think they just need to make the correct small adjustments and they will be right back where they were under Ferguson.
Small adjustments won't do it for United any more. They aren't in a position to compete with City, Liverpool or Arsenal over the course of a few years. Sure, they might have a decent season here or there, but they are a Villa/Newcastle level of team right now and they need to do the same things Villa or Newcastle would need to do to step up into the top few teams again, which is a very, very difficult task.

its not an issue of expectations. i dont think either the board or the fans have unrealistic expectations for the club or the team at the moment.

the issue is the board are just incompetent. i think it was more important for the current board to show that theyre different from the circus that was woodward and co. even if amorim turned out to be a failure at the end of the 3 years, in principle the board should have done what they said they would, which is back amorim, give him time and trust him.

not only have they failed to do that, our own dof is basically actively sabotaging the team just when the team is actually starting to show improvement in performances. the cherry on top is sjr choosing to back wilcox, whos been a dof less than amorim has been a manager and has more association with uniteds rivals than united. if they were gonna sack amorim, it had to be at the end of the last season. once they publicly backed him, which i thought was respectable despite it being questionable, they had to stick to their guns and stand by it.

now all theyve done is made what was a respectable decision a really fucking stupid decision. and its the 3rd time theyve done it already, with dan ashworth and ten hag being one and two. and united fans are still supposed to believe that ineos can bring back success to the club? fuck that. its the same fking hamster wheel and im fucking sick of it.

Rosenior with a 6+ year contract right away. I guess that gives Chelsea some safety that he can't be nabbed into other clubs so easily and spreads the expenses to a wider time span, but it's still pretty crazy contract when your average manager lasts maybe two years at the very best.

Probably more of an issue for Rosenior than for Chelsea though. I guess he didn't have the best position to negotiate when both clubs have the same ownership.

Ratcliffe is a donkey. Since he arrived in December 2023 he has done the following:

- Openly shopped around for a Ten Hag replacement at the end of 23/24 season, publicly undermining him
- Can't find anyone, gives Ten Hag a contract extension, and spends 250 million euros on players Ten Hag wants
- Team gets worse, sacks Ten Hag, who gets a payout
- Spend millions prising Dan Ashworth from Newcastle to be the new sporting director
- Ashworth tries to implement a comprehensive, analytical approach to replacing Ten Haag
- Amorim hired on vibes instead. Gentle reminder that this is 6 months after WEST HAM said no to hiring Amorim
- Ashworth leaves/is sacked as a direct result, gets a payout
- Amorim proves a disaster and United have their worst season in 50 years
- Spend another 250 million euros, for players Amorim wants
- Amorim sacked, gets a payout

I don't think I've ever seen anyone do so much damage to a club in such a short amount of time. United were genuinely in a better place when the Glazers had complete control.

EDIT:
Didn't see this before I posted

Crystal Palace lost to 6th tier Macclesfield in the FA cup. Biggest upset in terms of league ranking ever in that comp, 117 ranks lower.

Guardian article

Palace had 3 of their best 11 playing as well, so it wasn't a complete B team.

I saw some pretty funny infographic where the running expenses of Macclesfield were included in the chart of Crystal Palace player salaries. Some 80% of the Palace individual salaries are above the whole club's expenses and the top earners are almost tenfold.

Well hey, we got a 40 matches season now. The players can rest properly now to prepare for the future.

Next year is our year! /s

Bradley out for the rest of the year. Poor lad is gonna miss Northern Irelands' WC playoff and WC potential run too... So gutted for him. That's three players out the rest of the season for us now... nightmare season for us.

So, that's 38 in PL and getting knocked out in both cups on the first match and no European football? That's kind of bleak for a club of United's size.

In the mess that Manchester United has created, it all falls back to the board room which looks more stupid than Amorim in my opinion. Amorim was sticking to his guns, yes it didn't look good but it was his principle of playstyle. The worst was probably the defeat to Grimsby, but not long after Jim Ratcliffe said in an interview he was expecting to have Amorim in the club long term of atleast 3 years to create something sustainable and now they fired him because of a power struggle about transfer strategy and the playstyle. Again why didn't they knew this is his style of play before they hired him. It's wild how incompentent the board room is in Manchester United. INEOS haven't done any better than Glazers since taking over, such a shit show.
