I get why, but it feel like when you throw buckets of public money at the olympic you could at least expect to have the event in you own language.

Especially with those HUGE korean crowds.........oh wait

The Winter Olympics in general, save a few events, seem to not be resonating outside northern European countries.

Here in California, we have the 2 US stars in the snowboard but people seem unaware that the Olympics are going on. I had some people do a double take and wonder what Olympics it is because it doesn't feel like winter at all.

well one of the main missions of such events is to introduce winter sports to more people and help building infrastructure for sports to develop in new countries. I think its fair that sometimes it feels a little off.

last rock in the 1st end is not that big of an advantage. the 13-2 thing is more of a coincidence than anything else.

for people into the Finland//Sweden rivarly its happening in women's hockey on the 17th. The winner faces team USA. Lots of days off for Canada and the USA in this women's event.

Last rock at the start is a huge advantage... 13-2 is not "just a thing".

Well, too many of the events require a mountainous snowy area and not too many countries have that. Even the big sporting countries in Asia like China and South Korea don't have much of a history in winter sports, at least compared to the summer ones. Maybe Japan has a little bit more participation in them.

nah, its not a huge advantage. how often does a team hold last rock for 3+ ends while keeping the score 0-0?
not often. you can't control the flow of an entire 10 end match.

here is a typical curling event.. .The Brier.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Tim_Hortons_Brier

it was rare for even the 1st end to be 0-0.

Turn out the Quebec team come from my home town, never heard of anyone actually playing/ watching/ not making fun of curling growing up. But honestly I can't be surprise the curling team come from the city with the lowest crime stats in Quebec.
I guess it must be fun when you know how it work

That was crazy. Must be the biggest sensation ever in Alpine skiing. At least when it comes to the olympics. Glad that Lara Gut missed the bronze by 0,01 sec. Thats what she gets for crying over not winning gold even though she had a dreadful season so far.

I'm not acurling expert, sowhy is a 0-0 first end be important? Because you then the game is essentially 9 ends so you (assuming everyone scores with the last stone), you get 5 ends with the last stone and the other team only 4?

Anway, in the tornament you linked I count a 48-30 score for team with the last stone in the first end, which still seems to be relevant to me.

T_T that must have been nuts to see live. Too bad the time was pretty bad for Europe (like always for Alpine Skiing, but I won't complain since Biathlon and Ski flying is at decent times), so I didn't wanna watch it.

the craziest shit is that her run didnt not look good at all, she had quite some mistakes there. Hence her not believing she won the moment she finished. This was insane!

Women Super G is disgrace for most other women skiers imo.

Anna Veith had been injured most of the time the last two years and the gold medalist is a professional snowboarder. What do the rest of the women train for all the time?

The win was such a bizarre moment. Nobody saw it coming. Not even Czech analysts, they thought she might get like a top 15 finish if she has a good race. Even she herself genuinely couldn't believe it after she finished, she thought the board was wrong that they're gonna fix it or that she must've missed a gate or something. It wasn't even a flawless run, she made a couple small mistakes. And it's not even like this is a niche sport, you could make a case for the women's super G being one of the biggest events in the whole Olympics. Definitely one of the biggest wtf moments in all of Winter Olympics history, alongside the Australian short track winner from 2002.

You can see the winning race and Ledecka's reaction here:

Yeah, quite crazy. She definitely made a few mistakes.

Meanwhile, Poland got their first medal. Kamil Stoch won just now.

so i guess Russia is the favourite in the men's hockey event because they have KHL players?
so its Finland versus USA in the women's hockey semi-finals. it might be a close game.

the other poster is claiming holding the hammer in the first end allows you to "control the whole match". suppose you hold the hammer at the start of the match. Well if you score in the first end you lose the hammer. If your opponent scores you still hold the hammer but you are losing the match. This is why you can not "control" a match with the hammer in end #1.
It is pretty unusual to blank, that is have no one score, 2 ends in a row. Listen to how the commentators reacted to the 2 consecutive blank ends between sweden and canada last night. he was pretty damn surprised.

Russia is somewhat of a favorite but other countries have KHL players too. Imo Russia has been overrated a lot before this tournament and i think pretty much any top team could win. Finland vs Sweden would be a nice and a pretty possible final though.
