Not worse in terms of morality, but as far as I'm concerned, 1 person making £20 million per year is more harmful for society than 1 person being racist. Phrased myself wrongly there, looking at my post it's harsher than how I really feel - I don't mean to judge individuals. but I genuinely do think the absurd money thrown around in sports is a significant societal problem.

One person making 20million simply means there's an employer who thinks someone can bring in 20m/year value for them. It might be an incorrect estimate but we don't know anything about the Chinese market. I agree that huge income disparity is harmful to society but this isn't a case where people are manipulating the financial system for their benefit or owners at the top taking an unfair slice of the pie.

It's like in American sports when people balk at how much athletes making, but if you look at what the owners are bringing in it's usually the case that the athletes are underpaid, especially in leagues with a salary cap.

Having said this, the team Oscar is going to is rival to the team I grew up supporting (shenhua). They were only founded in 2005 and don't have nearly the same fanbase. I don't know who their backers are but the last time I went back in 2014 ish, the tickets were dirt cheap and they couldn't fill their stadium so I can't imagine this to be a good investment.

This China thing is an unsustainable bubble, football won't grow in China at a rate to make 60m transfers for semi-big names like Oscar worthwhile. Interest and/or money will run out.

I'll add that a Brazilian players, in general, didn't grow up dreaming about playing in the premier league, do not speak English, do not identify with English culture or weather. Oscar had already sold out by going to Chelsea.

The premier league is more competitive than the Chinese league but why should that be the main prism through which to guide one's life? Maybe he doesn't enjoy the flipping rain, doesn't appreciate the British humor, thinks most of his Chelsea teammates are twats and for some reason hates the London night scene. China pays better and presents a welcome change of scenery and a challenge on the personal level. Footballers were not put on this earth merely for our personal entertainment. They're people, people.

Yeah I'm sure Oscar went to enjoy the air quality in Shanghai...

The difference is the EPL represents a high level of play which every Brazilian would respect, China does not. I have no doubt it's purely for monetary reasons, I don't dislike him for going but it's disappointing.

He goes to china at 25 and basically gives up any chance of representing his country, any chance to realise his potential, any chance to rebuild his career. His hunger and drive to succeed is gone. You can't call yourself a professional, more like a mercenary.

Yea giovinco is shining in MLS, but the footballing world does not take him seriously anymore. As Conte remarked regarding his Euros 2016 omission, "When you make a certain choice and go to play in certain leagues, you do so taking it into account that they could pay the consequences from a footballing viewpoint".

I see cowardice, I see fear. Someone with no confidence in succeeding, no motivation in working hard, and just taking the easy way out. I'm pretty sure if he wanted to, other clubs in Germany, France, Italy and Spain would want him. Obviously his priorities are elsewhere *cough* money *cough*

yeah if youre playing for a big club in england, on a decent wage (by footballer standards), you shouldnt really be looking for a move unless its to another big club in another big league where you can still achieve something within the world of professional football.
moving to china is exactly what duck said, a cowards move looking for money. not that he needs it. hes made enough money to last him his life unless hes an idiot and blows all his money, but despite that hes going for more at the cost of leaving behind a story worth remembering.
personally i think people like oscar is the reason why our society has turned to such shit. people are so obsessed with living easy lives now and making money rather than thinking about what they leave behind and what future generations can look at. when oscar is dead no one is gonna care how much money he made, only that he sold himself out for something that he already had enough of. when gerrard is dead everyone will remember him for his loyalty, professionalism and being an all-round role model for younger generations.

I like what Klopp said as well.

"What can I say? In most parts of the world, it's a free world and we can make our own decisions. If a player decides to go there [China], usually it's in another part of your career.

"I think in this moment it's not a league where you actually want to play, but the only way to bring the players there is the money.

"If a player decides for himself then you have no real weapons to hold him here. That's how it is. I think in nearly all big European leagues, you can earn a lot of money and it should be enough at the end, especially for the top players."

Depending on how long his contract is, he could still return to Europe/South America before he's 30. The fact is the Chinese league will never be relevant as there's just not enough grassroots support and not enough competition, or good, uncorrupted competition. China has not produced one player who could be first team at a top European club, unlike Japan and Korea. China has the biggest market and the biggest talent pool.

The air in Shanghai is better than in Beijing, he should be more concerned about getting his money out of China especially if he's paid in RMB.

I'm probably wrong on this but it seems like the Seleção doesn't care as much about which league their players comes from? If he tears up the Chinese league then he may still have a chance in 2018. He would be playing on the same team as Hulk.

To my best knowledge, it probably doesn't matter given how much he earns and what kind of people are paying him. The loopholes that are there for Westerners to exploit are probably a joke to the Chinese. The problem is that the government is trying their best to keep people from moving their money abroad. This is connected with the stagnating economy and the crackdown on corruption.

man people really like to pontificate ... "No one will care about Oscar".. I got news for ya.. no one really cares about Oscar right now either, except maybe Chelsea fans, no one gave a shit about him for a while now till the transfer news lol.

Also as far as Gionvico is concerned, he was never good enough to play for Italy anyway. Im sure your new God Conte had reasons beyond just the fact that he chose to play in MLS.

They dont, its for the most part an exercise in arrogance from Europeans. Although admittedly its not without merit.

In other news, Palace went from a headbutting manager into a (was it tax evasion?) manager.

Show us your ways big Sam.

He is a transfer rule getting around manager haha. But it's still an extremely good appointment, with the solid back line he has in that team and the solid keeper plus good pacey wingers and a solid striker. He will have that team winning in no time, might not look nice to some but he will be giving everyone a very hard game.

Fifa is discussing whether to allow only captains to speak to referees, says former Netherlands striker and manager Marco van Basten.

It would bring football in line with rugby union, which has strict rules around in-match communication.

Van Basten, Fifa's chief technical development officer, said there have been talks about how to improve player behaviour and respect for officials.

"There are a lot of players now who are complaining during a game," he said.
