The mechanism, if its not just the election, that causes the ratings to fall is that all the talk shows discuss the protest instead of sports. That tunes people out because the sports talkers are boring and incompetent when discussing race, which means the NFL is missing a major hype source.

It was really annoying during the first few games when the commentators were only talking about the anthem and protests during the pregame and first few minutes of the game. That got old really fast. I tune in for football not to see what players raise their fists or kneel during the anthem.

At the start of the season I considered watching a lot of the 'big games', but I could not keep up with it. Also, surprise surprise, not all of the 'big games' turned out to be much entertaining. But since I am not invested in any team particularly and I don't check the results, I have no problem seeing a game a couple of days later. So all I need is a "recommended list" just like TL has for every week of SC2.
I don't think there is such a spoilerfree list. For me, the best games are usually the 'big games'. If you want to see alot of yards and touchdowns you could just check out the stats and watch the teams with the best offenses.

CFL ratings are down in Canada. maybe people are just bored of football in general.

I would blame Thursday night football for the drop in raitings far before the antham protests. it has nothing to do with sports and the time and energy networks like ESPN and the annoucers spend on it is whats pushing people away.
Not to mention the rise in streaming games ahead of watching it on cable or dish.

Christ the Spartans are bad this year lol

Navy beat houston OMG Thats so insane I can't count the number of people I talked to before today that said they were a playoff team.

lol. I thought Houston looked really good in week 1 but it's been pretty shaky since. Greg Ward looks like he has some nagging injury but the backup isnt good enough so they need to leave Ward in. I think the way things were trending though they were on route to being left out. I didnt see them getting past Louisville and theres no way they were going to be taken as a 1 loss team. Navy pretty much ended their hopes

Wow... Michigan vs Rutgers is just... brutal.. Not just the score, but the stats...

Rutgers hasn't scored in 132:45 of game time now. Only 36 yards for the game. No 1st downs until the 4th
Washington - Oregon is another absolute beat down. I guess 12 years of pent up rivalry angst will do that

The heightened awareness of concussions and all the Goodell controversies is probably catching up to the NFL as well.

Just stop playing the national anthem before every game! It makes no sense! Is "good save the queen" played before every PL game? Hell no! It would just be silly!
Countries with a healthier relation to their national anthem and symbols save those for INTERNATIONAL competitions, where the opposition is actually from another country.
I am very pleased this redicolous tradition is backfiring.

I am very pleased this redicolous tradition is backfiring. Back when I went to elementary school in the States they'd play the national anthem for us weekly over the intercom. And every morning before we started class we'd stand at our desks facing the room's flag (every room had one), put our right hand over our hearts, and recite a Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and the country. It's been 20 years but I can still recite the pledge and most of the words of the anthem.
It's impossible to overstate how important the flag and the anthem are to a lot of Americans (though I'm guessing this would vary greatly by race, education, and class).
