great athletes can play any sport. MLB and NBA and FIFA all pay better. the best athlete in my high school could destroy poeple in snooker with little practice.

the cognitive dissonance around head injuries with the NHL and NFL is both comical and ironic.

$100,000 a year ain't that much. i know lots of nurses who make over $100,000 USD. it ain't that hard to become a nurse. Furthermore, male nurses are needed for certain very specific roles and often become independent gun-slingers rather than full time employees... making even more cash that way.

Thats simply untrue about nurses. The typical nursing student is above the 50% percentile in both standardized testing and class rank. The average NFL Wunderlick score, 20, which includes that many of them prep for it, is about the same as that of a cashier.

Even though nurses are listed by this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonderlic_test as an average of 23, the profession has evolved significantly since 1983 and the degree is typically one of the more rigorous on campus, for most schools its basically another STEM degree.

The average athlete in America is not very smart, its true many chose football over other sports, but most, like Russel Wilson chose football because the other sports rejected them. Lebron went to basketball, Jeff Samardzija despite being an elite TE prospect and a releif pitcher chose baseball.

This also translates to coaches, and why there aren't a great deal of ex-NFL players as NFL head coaches. What make you think the ability to be bigger, faster, and stronger somehow is related to being smarter?

it depends what nursing organization you work for and what your specialty is. if you graduate with a 4 year B.Sc. in Nursing in Canada there is a clear path to making $100K per year if it is a priority. its just not a very difficult degree.

giant wall of text about nurse's pay in canada that has nothing to do with the NFL.
+ Show Spoiler +
i made the payroll system for the largest nursing organization in canada and i know exactly how much they make. i know exactly what every procedure pays... the amount of every deduction . i know how much they get paid for travel time .... everything. 100K is not a problem dawg.

this organization is virtually begging for male nurses because dealing with wing-nut patients for home visits in rural areas is difficult. The salaries are going no where but up... and often they rig the game in certain ways that i can't discuss to give the nurses extra cash.

also, i made the incident/injury reporting system so i know what injuries are being incurred. and its just not a very dangerous job even for the male nurses who only deal with the biggest idiot patients.

the nurses unions fuck with these payroll #s labelling certain pay items as "non nursing work" and this allows them to make it look like nurses are making less money so they can appeal to the public during collective bargaining. these are the public stats guys like you are probably quoting. so you can google all you want... it means nothing... the nurses unions are lying... and are playing the victim card hard.

for the record the nursing organization is not VoN.

the degree requires a lot of memorizing.

if you want to continue debating what 4 year Honours BSc.N.'s in Canada make and how easy it is to get the degree we should probably take it to PM man.
also, nothing stopping really stupid students from playing basketball or baseball.

It's a controversy because even at the NCAA level, you need thousands of players in high school for the few players needed to reach the college level. Those players who don't have college football aspirations are just harming themselves for no benefit. In fact, what they are doing is detrimental if they choose to go into professional white collar work later in their lives.

Every star player who made it to the professional leagues had to play against kids just playing for fun during their K-12 days. The NFL is tampering with the research because they fear parents removing those kids from the system. You can't play sports if you don't have enough players to play with or against.

the same thing is happening in Canada with hockey. and Hockey Canada is having a conniption over it. injuries are up.. participation is down.
The NFL is getting what they deserve.

I get people saying that they should have known about the possibility of serious injuries before all the studies come out, but then we talk about how a decent portion of these athletes aren't super intelligent. It kinda shows why these studies/results are important.

Like smoking and steroids, kids/parents/players should be made aware of the risks in case they don't know and so they can make the best informed decisions for their future. I loved football more than any other sports I played, nothing was like it. I'll let my kids play if they want, but the leash will be shorter for injuries than it was for me.

But we have all had this discussion on here before. This story is about the NFL being called out on what they have been doing for years in a way that is not only impossible to deny, but actually cost tax payers $16 million.

Luckly the nfl and there players generate a hell of a lot more than 16 million in tax dollars every year.

This is more as mentioned above much to do about nothing. The reason we value these people sports or in particular nfl. And that's why they make what they make. Which is a ton of money, not to mention all the benefits for future job interviews and opportunities. Now let's compare to military in the states higher chance of cte. Way higher chance of death and other super serious injury. Pay not even close.

The pay to risk ratio is far better than a huge % of jobs. (military police, firefighting, welder, crab fishing, mining, so on) stop pretending these guys are getting taken advantage of, they are more than welcome to get any job they choose. They happen to have chose football and have the talent, they get the risks and rewards. Well worth it.

It's been mentioned before that this isn't just about the pro players, it's about kids playing the sport as well and the parents that want to know the risks. At this point it's clear, but 10 years ago it really wasn't... Covering up an issue that affects people at the pro, college, and highschool levels is worthy of a serious discussion.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/15723958/buffalo-bills-gm-doug-whaley-said-statement-used-poor-choice-words
after meeting with the league Whaley has decided to toe the party line. LOL

boys football participation in the USA is down now that parents have more information about head injuries.
http://byuiscroll.org/the-concussion-crisiss-effect-on-youth-football/

same thing is happening in canada with boys hockey. i'm happy to see this trend.

There are lots of other sports to play that pay great and do not have the same health risks as NFL Football or NHL hockey. There is no guarantee when you are 16 that you're going to make any money at whatever sports you are playing. One can't really blame the parents for pulling their kids out of high risk activities that result in head injuries whatever those activities may be.

I'm glad to see the both the NHL and NFL are being provided a smaller pool of victims with the potential to be fed into their human meat grinders. its great to see more Canadian boys playing basketball and less playing hockey and i applaud the parents for contributing to this change.

your comments are inaccurate. the only hockey thread i'm not in is an NHL thread from 2 years ago. its really the only brand of hockey i don't like very much. i don't watch. i watch NFL occasionally and here i am. don't say i "hate" anything. you don't know. i don't want kids getting brain damage.

you have no logical rebuttal to my post so this all out emotional attack is all you have.

any how, unusual stuff continues to emanate from the Bills
"bizarre even by bizarre NFL standards."
http://www.businessinsider.com/buffalo-bills-new-media-policy-2016-5

"Acknowledging an injury occurred is permitted, but anything beyond a general report would be purely speculative and possibly inaccurate."

it looks like we're going to get the old "upper body injury" and "lower body injury" stuff that you see in other sports.

How bad the Bills are is part of the fun in cheering for them.

Yeah I'm all for putting as much factual information out to the public as possible, but we shouldn't be openly discouraging people from playing the sports they enjoy outside of that. Parents can make the choice for their kids, and adults can make the choice if they want to play a dangerous sport that has the potential to make them a lot of money.

The logical rebuttal to your post, Jimmy, is that humans can make decisions for themselves, even if it may result in injury.

So moving on...

Who's a good sleeper team this year? I'm feeling Jax making a run after their offense last year and their improvements again in a weak division where people still seem to expect the Colts or Houston to be good.

lol, not according to the message i got from a mod 2 years ago. LOL.. this is hilarious ... you read every post i make and claim you know the tiny details of moderation involving my account from 2 years ago better than i do? awesome!
u r not a hater.. u r a fan

the above is funny and off topic. what follows is funny and on topic.

http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/buffalo-bills-media-policy-beat-writers-practice-reporting-reactions-052416

i always thought the NFL was really strict about the injury reporting process and i'm surprised the Bills are trying to create their own top secret injury reporting rules. with every other team being far more reporter-friendly than the bills i think its only a matter of time before the Bills reverse this policy. the blow-back by the Bills beat reporters is huge.

the events of this past week are making the Bills GM look silly.

maybe Bills GM should introduce a rule where reporters can't publish that the Bills have not made the playoffs in 16 years in order to keep team morale up.

There is a fair bit of sleeper hype around Jax and Oak taken the next steps this year. Anyone from the NFC east could surprise since the whole division is bad (unless Romo stays healthy than I think the Boys are a real threat to anyone)

The Jax/Oakland hype, is IMO based on ridiculous inflations of the quality of thier qbs. From all of it you'd think Carr -Bortles is the next Manning -Brady.

It's a huge step up compared to what they've each had! Both teams showed promise last year. They've almost grown past sleeper status :D

I see pundits already talking about how they predict Oakland will take the AFC West when there are still two better teams in the division...sometimes the hype gets a little out of control.
