A 1 loss USC team would be very much in the discussion, even if that 1 loss is a blowout against Alabama. Even a 2 loss USC team might even be in the discussion, considering that losses against Alabama are not counted as much.
There are plenty of teams who didn't get penalized by an Alabama loss. Teams like A&M didn't really drop out of the discussion until after their 2nd non-Alabama loss.
