When I watch Messi or Neymar I often get the same chills I did when I watched Ronnie. He was more "magical" maybe... but better? With Neymar it's close IMO. Messi is in a whole other level.

to me, I almost never get the same chills from watching Messi as I did when watching Ronaldinho. Or actually, never. There's no doubt who is the better player, but if I'm just watching a 5 minute highlight reel of the best moves, then ronaldinho is #1, and I think by the same kind of margin Messi has as being best overall.

I think though, for the two or so seasons where he was number 1, he was really good in pretty much every game, at least every game I saw. (Which admittingly was basically limited to clasico+champions league matches)

Many games he didn't turn up or just breezed through it, it looked like he needed someone to sit him and down and tell him he could be the best ever if he tried, but he didn't. But even with that still, some of the stuff he did was sensational. Neymar has alot to do to be close to that and Messi is a different player, less skill with messi and just more balance like Hazard. Gets passed people with his low centre of gravity and pace. Where as Ronaldinho just did straight up trickery. While Ronnie is my second favourite player, he is second favourite for that very reason. The fact that Messi has to do so little to make people look like mugs isnt just about "balance" sure the low center of gravity and all are important, but there are lots of small quick players. Also if your going to be better, you have to stay at the top, not turn into a fat turd. Lots of dudes can even tricks and do cool stuff. Just walk to a street corner in south america. No value in parlour tricks if you can just walk past dudes. He was good, but it was like if he wanted to show up he showed up and he only showed up kinda enough to win, in later seasons. He was carry mode Godly when he first joined and a little after the first title. As for the bicycle. Rivaldo's hat trick goal to qualify for CL over Valencia is better for me, it kinda sort saved a shitty season, Yes, fun times when Barca sucked and the Galactico transfer policy was king.

That Hattrick with a bicycle kick in the extra time from Rivaldo against Valencia, getting a 3-2 score in the last match of La Liga and the #4 place (last Champions spot) is one of my favorite moments. So many great Brazilians at bar¢a.

Im not saying Ronnie isnt amazing. He practically revived Barcelona on his own, saved a season and then won the next couple. Funny thing he was the guy they "settled" for after Becks went to RM. I dont really think that goal is amazing as people make it out to be. He put his foot through it with a topepoke from a standing position. You can give him audacity points but really your tinting it with Chelsea goggles again. Ibra does that shit for fun. In fairness he was carrying realllyyyy hard in that particular couple of games especially. Problem is your idea of skill is parlour tricks regardless of where or when they are. The brilliance of someone is measured on how little they have to resort to those things. Thats real skill. Its funny that the least important part of what I said was the one you addressed. Honestly by that token Ibra is the most skilled person in history. Which we all know is bullshit. I love Ibra but just because he does funky shit doesnt make him more skilled. I still think though, his body movement is more straight forward, ronaldinho's is just.. he twists himself and manages to rotate with such speed and agility that it to me, just doesn't really look human. I can easily accept that he didn't show up for every game though - like I said, only really watched him in CL matches, but the way I remember it, there's like a 2 year window where I didn't watch him have a bad game? No he didnt, he was far and away the best player in the world at that time. likee 2004-2006 or so. Thing is thinking about it, even the game where he took Madrid to the cleaners and got applauded by the Bernabeau, he was basically just ripping apart a very green Ramos and Salgado who was a terrible terrible player to be playing at the top level. Really no clue how he survived that long at Real. Like Pandemona would be whining about how terrible Reals defense was bad, kinda bad.

In the end I would rather be in a stadium watching peak Ronaldinho/Best/Pele/Maradona than watch a Messi/Ronaldo game. Maybe thats because I've watched so many Messi/Ronaldo games that they got boring but meh. The next generation will have 'the most hyped player' and he will be compared to Messi and Ronaldo. Of course with the tabloid cult of celebrity modern life has devolved to that guy will be named 'better than Messi', and the guy after him will be better and so on. I remember how hyped Ronaldinho was, I feel like Messi/Ronaldo don't have that. like people have been talking about it for so long nobody cares about it anymore
