watching ronaldo and messi has raised my expectations from normal players. if i see players fail to do what ronaldo and messi do (ie, the classic acceleration past opponents by messi), i am disappointed rather than amazed at ronaldo and messi however, i do not expect anyone to do what ronaldinho did. ronaldinho alone could do what he did and no one else will replicate his presence on the field

Somehow I can't picture myself telling my kid 'yeah, Ronaldo and Messi were magic on the field, it was amazing watching them'. Its like I've seen the same incredible level of football for so long it not so special anymore.

You 'll only miss it after it's gone. What's so amazing about Ronaldo and Messi is not just how ridiculously good they are but it's also coupled with an insane amount of goals. I don't really recal any of the legends being this effective for such a long time.

What Ronnie did isnt any different from your Zidane's, Figo's. Ronaldo's even guys like Del Piero at their peak were pretty awesome. Like the entire Juve team strat was - defend defend defend. Give ball to Nedved/Seedorf et all and Del Piero go score. Shevchenko at his peak was pretty good aswell.
You can pull out a highlight reel for all of them. So Ronnie while world class is in that league. Not in the league that Messi and Ronaldo sit in.
These 2 are live highlight reels.

I think Zidane's highlight reel is the only one of those comparable to Ronaldinho's. I agree in terms of team impact, which ultimately is the most important thing, but Ronaldinho's selling point is his artistry, and as far as I'm concerned, he really is the undisputed champion in that regard.

Wellll.. Ronaldo (real ronaldo not CR7 Ronaldo) did the same things Ronnie did before Ronnie. Both at Barca and Inter, didnt have to do so much at Real when you have Zidane and Figo behind you.
Like to the point that if you didnt know anything about football back in the day and you were in a third world country you knew Ronaldo, sort of Jordanesque.
its different now obviously but Ronaldo's impact on the game was so huge before cable got Footy in the rest of the world he was literally synonymous with the world football because of how cool he was to watch even if you didnt care about footy. I can say this doubly because I grew up in said environment.
Heres an idea go watch a few Ronaldo vids (phenomnon not CR7) and watch some Ronnie vids. And aside from some confirmation bias if you really think about it you wont find much difference in wow factor.
I will say this, Ronnies style of moving and running was classier to look at than Ronaldo who was a bit more powerpuff and rough in his movement. They basically did the same things though and Ronaldo had a better finish on him and Ronnie was a better passer.
And this is just one example

Ronaldinho was really good for a rather short period. That's the main thing I count against anybody saying that he was the greatest football artist. How long do you have to be amazing to count as that? I think Zidane and Bergkamp are also more deserving of that title, because they were at that top level for far longer than Ronaldinho Gaucho. Even if they never peaked at the level of Ronaldinho, a highlight reel doesn't care whether the highlights happened over 2 years of real time or 10.

And yeah, I'll grant you that he's something truly truly special. Still, I think he was more efficient, and slightly less of an artist. SO many incredible nutmegs and technical details though, for sure. there's no objective answer here (unlike the best player discussion ), but to me, I still think ronaldinho has the most wow factor. But phenomenon might be the closest suggestion to make me reconsider.
Hence my point about it his style being classier to look at. But yeah thats even more subjective than the best player discussion. We all know Messi GOAT anyway.

Yeah but calling someone the greatest ever should mean that no one was better than them. If someone was better at their peak for even a year that still means that if they played on the same pitch in prime from the guys that was only good for a year would be better.
edit: Eh, you guys making me watch highlight videos. Really hate when they take 4:3 footage taken from a 240p source and put it in widescreen.

Haha same here, basically when you watch all the joga bonitos there is no denying that Ronaldinho is the greatest

if anyone hasn't been following the benzema drama, it's getting a lot more juicier

I really don't understand how Benzema can live this down? I also don't understand why the fucking fuck he would do something this ridiculously stupid? The guy makes £150k per week, and gets involved in blackmailing a fellow national team player? It's just.. this type of greed and idiocy really boggles the mind. (I mean, I get that Benzema wasn't himself going to profit from it, but if his childhood friend was so desperate for £150k, couldn't benzema just help him out with a week's wages instead of implicating himself in a serious crime?)
Even disregarding the whole, horrible morality of it all, the sheer stupidity is even more provocative to me.

But are the rumors have any validity? Thought Pep signed an extension last year with Bayern?
|
Oh just seen the edit, I was on about benzema tweet. I think Pep has until end of 2018?

Didn't it not get done at all, last year? So it still expires in 2016. Bayern's been trying to keep Pep forever.

Im sure Pep has only ever had the one contract right? 3 years from when he started. I see everyday a different rumor in press in england. Signs for City, then rumors signing extension i dont know what he is doing and how good sources are.
