Arsenal are not even close to city and united yet, especially united spending has been out of this world. Chelsea is actually very close to Arsenal at the moment as they comply with FFP, but their strategy of selling youth players for big money has allowed them to compete with City and united nonetheless. Arsenal are getting there sure, but they aren't there yet. To be honest, I thought they had paid off their stadium debt somewhere in 2014. Thats why they could afford alexis, I thought anyway. I feel Wenger is too conservative for what they need at the moment, and its just been a club to sell on French players to other PL clubs... So often have I seen Arsenal buy totally worthless French players, when there are equal or better players on the market (from other competitions).
No they haven't payed off their stadium just yet, this was an inaccurate assumption that was brought into the world following arsenal's spending and an inaccurate view at debt. Their gross debt is still the second highest in the league, however their net debt is zero because Arsenal have an amazing cash balance (more than 200mil pounds) which has allowed them to start spending on the transfer market including the new sponsorship deals.
Now you are right Wenger is too conservative and he has definitely made his errors (especially with wages, a socialistic wage structure is not going to do you any favours when you are paying the likes of Diaby and Chamahk the same kind of money as van Persie), but he is starting to change his approach the last couple seasons. Wenger still needs to change more for him to be the right man in the long run though, but I feel he should be given the time still as Faruko mentioned Arsenal are still some way off City, United and Chelsea in squad quality.
(Btw my post comes off as a bit rude, sorry about this but english isn't my first language and we Dutch tend to be a bit blunt)

Yeah like GTR said it is finding a site that is available and the Chelsea supporters want. If you didn't know back in the early 90s i think it was Chelsea were a bit broke and the Bank were about to take the stadium or really tighten the screw on us financially so Ken Bates sold off the Stadium rights % to Chelsea fans who bought a stake. It kept us going for a lot longer and we were in turn owning part of the club. However now these guys don't want to move from where we are as they think they are either getting financially "screwed over" or they don't want to move full stop. This caused us problems.
However i believe now we have put forward planning permission from to the council for an extension on the current site. Chelsea having a 50k+ stadium would be great, 60k would be ideal i think as we would be able to drop prices as well to encourage better atmosphere etc.

Ah yeah I see. Extending the current stadium is also a very viable option if it's possible construction wise. The thing though with a modern stadium is that there is a lot more to be gained from commercial/business options.
But yeah, having multiple big clubs in one city isn't very handy either. I'd reckon you'd have to move out of the city a fair bit to build a new stadium and there's always nostalgic people who'll hate the new stadium because it isn't cozy and shit.

You Dutchies offend my English sense of politeness. Get out.

I thought the main problem with Chelsea expanding on the current site was that there isn't a particularly great way of improving acess to the stadium.

Haha he do it on purpose, make Gerrard think he good again, then boom scores another own goal and we win the carling cup....i mean go through to the final :D

He thinks that is worst thing Chelsea fans sing about?

That article feels like a dig against Lampard for some reason haha.

So while little has been happening in world football today (apart from CAN) I'll take the opportunity to talk a little bit about the club that has the generated the largest accumulated gross revenue from player sales in the past 4 years.
The 14-15 Benfica fire sale Two successful footballing years generated plenty of value for Benfica's starting 11 players. From last winter's transfer season until today, the following team starters left:
- - - - - - - - - Rodrigo (30M€) - Cardozo (5M€)- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Enzo Perez (25M€) - André Gomes (15M€) - Lazar Markovic (25M€) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Matic (25M€)- - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - Siqueira (end of loan) - Garay (6M€ wtf)- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jan Oblak (16M€)- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
That's 9 starting players for a gross value of 132M€.
The windfall from the fire sale does not really translate into an investment in new players of the same caliber. The club has over 400M€ of debt, its two main sponsors will withdraw from sponsoring soon due to the crisis in Portugal, while the crisis has also had an impact on ticket and merchandise sales. Meanwhile, new TV deals in the UK and random tycoons purchasing clubs in France, UK and Spain have meant that it's really difficult for Benfica to compete in the transfer market for qualified talent (ie. Wilfred Bony had been a target but he preferred Swansea due to ££ and PL exposure).
That has meant that those 9 starters were replaced by the following players: - - - - - - - - Jonas (Free) - - - Derley (2M€) - - - - - - - - - - - - Talisca (4M€) - - - Samaris (10M€) - - Cristante (3-6M€) - - - - Eliseu (1.5M€) - - - - - César (3M€)- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Julio César (free) - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Total: 23.5M€ to replace 132M€. The reality is a little bit more fluid tho, as Benfica basically manages players with the mindset of an asset management company so these signings were not necessarily bought as direct replacements but have grown into the part. Jonas is a class striker with 12 goals in 14 apps, Julio Cesar is redeeming himself from the WC and has had 6 consecutive clean sheets, Talisca will be a starter in the Brazil NT for years to come, Cristante could be the next Pirlo (or close ), etc.
Meanwhile, recent investments in the academy are starting to pay off, with young promising players actually starting to appear in decent numbers. Benfica reached the finals of the Uefa Youth League last year (and played pretty well vs Barcelona in the finals) and seems to be doing quite well this year too.
While the revolution in the team was the cause of a shaky participation in the Champions League this year, Benfica has been dominating the national league with 15W-1D-1L while playing great football. Comparisons could be drawn with Southampton, but in that case there were 105M£ in earnings vs 64M£ in expenditures.
In an imaginary world, where lets say Benfica's TV revenue was not 7.5M€ until last season and rather 75M£ like Swansea, and the club could keep its biggest stars, this could be Benfica's team today:
- - - - - - - - Rodrigo - - Jonas - - - - - - Di Maria - - Enzo Perez/Witsel - - Ramires/Markovic - - - - - - - - - - - Matic - - - - - - - - - Fábio Coentrão - - David Luiz - - Luisão - - Maxi Pereira - - - - - - - - Julio Cesar - - - - - - - - - - -
IMO that's a team to compete for the CL.
PS: Shame to see Markovic's talent apparently wasted at Liverpool.

Talisca is the new Lampard.
I believe Porto's roster would've been better if they kept their players

Would still rather go with Benfica's

POGBA LINKED WITH REAL
Is former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba on his way to Real Madrid? Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti said he wasn't - but Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta has a different view.
"Ancelotti asked me some questions about Pogba," he told to Sky Italia. "He says he's not interested? Well, that's a white lie. I'm sure he has his reasons to say it's not true."
Marotta says it may be difficult for Juve to hold on to the talented Frenchman, should Real follow up on their interest.
"We will do everything within out limits to hold on to Pogba...but we have to bear in mind that we cannot compete with the wages that are being paid elsewhere. We have our limits."
ALL OF YOUR TALENTS BELONGS TO FlORENTINO PEREZ.

Everton Vs West Brom has been pretty poor so far. What's happended to Everton? They where pushing Champions League places last year.

I think they're too far removed from the Moyes era to keep riding on his defensive discipline. That, and they've become one year older, which is very apparent with at least Distin. Stone's been great, but was injured for a while. Then the bad form becomes a burden.
Mirallas taking the penalty over Baines (who has a pretty ridiculous record on penalties - 90+%) certainly doesn't help either.
