There's a lot more to determining where the power comes from than just grip width - try out your coaches suggestion if it makes him happy and doesn't hurt you - if you like it, keep it, if not, switch back. Personally I can't bench with a wider grip because it gives me shoulder problems (I actually bench with my index fingers on the smooth section of the bar; only about 15 inches apart).
Grip width is highly personal, depending on your body type. Especially if you have longer arms, you're probably fine where you are, but.... might as well try it, even if it's only to shut up your coach, right?

Yeah that is cool. Getting a coach upset isn't exactly what you want to do. I will try it out and see how it works.

Yeah I agree grip width is dependent on the person. If I gripped the bar that close, my shoulders would hurt on just 1 plate but I can bench 260lb no problems with a wider grip.

Damn that's such a beastly front squat.

Thanks! Goin for double bodyweight this year. Hopefully that will bring my cj up to 175-180 with technique work.

And then went back down to 68kg for 5x5 on my Bench Good progress on the squats. Keep it up!
Thanks a lot man! Feels good At this rate my goal of 90kg is just around the corner! I am going to be changing up my routine at the end of March, so I am hoping that I will hit my goal of 185 lbs for my bench but I am not too sure because of how much I am stalling on it,

Hi Everyone,
GOALS
BenKen Powerlifting 2/15/2013 || 4/20/2013
Bodyweight: 165lb to 165lb Height: 5'9, age 32
Squat: 258.82* to 275 Deadlift: 376.99* to 400 Bench Press: 225 to 255 Total: 860.81 to 930 (301 wilks)
* dentotes calculated off of 5RM, haven't tested in a while.
Been a while since I've been on TL, but somehow my powerlifting hobby has brought me back. I signed up for a meet (first ever) in April, kind of on a whim. Figured it would be nice to have something to train for, even though I have zero chance of placing. Just preparing and being part of a competition should be fun, I hope! I'm more than happy to take any words of advice from more experienced powerlifters in here.
Squats are so hard for me, so that's going to be my hardest goal to reach. DL I have decent confidence I can reach in two months, and on bench last time I tested I was having a bad day, but I've hit a touch and go 255 a few times before, so I'm fairly confident there.
9 weeks to meet.

Welcome Ben!
The first meet is really just about getting your feet wet and not about placing. Pretty good numbers for your weight class I must say but you can always improve.
With only 9 weeks to go I'd just focus on getting the proper meet forms down and figuring out what openers you are going to post.
Will you be competing with equipment or just raw?
|
Thanks man!
Yeah it's raw. I've still got a lot to learn about raw before I even think about equip. Same day weigh in too, so not gonna bother with any kind of cut.
Plan is to take openers about 3 weeks out, and taper down on Monday and Wednesday before the meet. Otherwise just normal training, I'm still getting fairly linear gains on most lifts so I figure no reason to screw with anything too much.
I gotta go buy a singlet at some point.
|
I like your approach. Bothering with weight is the worst thing you can do before your first meet apart from setting too high openers. Just eat like usually and take what weightclass you get placed in.
Like you've probably heard before they should be a weight you could hit on every single day with no preparation. It is especially important in the squat because nothing sucks more than bombing out on your first squat.
The first meet is a blast and I wish you all the best in the preparation!

Welcome! Our stats are really similar. I hope you have fun at your first meet, I might go in one eventually but never had the balls to do it. Make sure to let us know about your progress and how the meet goes.
Also I found this article the other day and liked it so figured I would share. Basically just a bunch of assistance on what will help you in which weak part of you deadlift. http://www.wannabebig.com/training/deadlift-5-plates-like-a-champion/

Last week: 180 lbs / 80.8 kg x4,5,5
dips: bw x15 85 lbs x10 135 lbs x5 160 lbs x3 180 lbs / 80.8 kg x5,6,7,7
So some improvements on the dips up to 7 reps. I might try for 5 reps of 190 lbs / 86.4 kg next time.

Added to the OP and forum totals updated! Sounds like you've got a great handle on the meet, good luck!
BTW guys our totals for 2013 are looking WEAK. There's fewer members that have posted actual numbers, sure, but the totals are floating ~half of what we did last year. If you're not in the OP, post goals!

Memento

Deadlift is definitely higher now, but will wait to finish Ed Coan to get an actual max.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!
@Mementoss thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I plan to post weekly updates.
@phyre thanks man! I plan on working on oly lifts after the meet, but I don't even know how to snatch right now and my clean is pretty terrible. I'll post goals for that eventually. I really want to learn, but all in good time.

15.02.2013 Deload week
Squat weight sets reps 120 1 13
Overhead Press weight sets reps 60 1 9
Deadlift weight sets reps 190 1 1
Pull Up weight sets reps bw 1 8 Chin Up weight sets reps bw 1 9
Hanging Leg Raise weight sets reps bw 2 8f-7
It is a little counter-intuitive that I pulled my heaviest Deadlift since at least six months today during my deload week. But quite frankly, an easy 190kg pull is much less taxing than 150kg for 11 reps. Everything felt pretty good today.

Wednesday
High box squats: 405-8, (added knee wraps) 455-4 ATG no belt or wraps: 275-20 15 minute treadmill walk...
