I have a 5k coming up tomorrow morning and I really want to run it. I've put some pain relief cream and will use a knee brace. I'll get to the event venue tomorrow and see how I feel. I may just have to walk the whole thing if necessary, but I'm hoping I don't have to do that because I was originally wanting to set a PR this time around.. I've had those for a 4-5 months and they are very light and comfortable. However, one of my runner friends told me that she doesn't like those shoes for long distance running because they don't give you much protection. It's true that I have had quite a few running injuries since Feburary (foot, knee, shin), so maybe she has a point. It's difficult to tell though because I ran longer and more frequently than ever during January/February and that could obviously also lead to injuries.

Finished in 3 hours and 23 minutes. I put myself in the pacing group for 3:30 which I thought was probably overly ambitious at the time so I'm extremely happy with that finish. I got way too excited in the first half ran an extremely positive split but the final results well exceeded my expectations so I'm not too concerned and learnt a lot for next time.

Also won the race, which was kind of neat! Since there was a half marathon and 5k going at the same time, and all the races shared the same finish line, there was no tape for me to break, so that particular fantasy will have to wait for another day, but I still fell quite justified in cracking open the 2011 Fuller's Vintage Ale I'd stashed away for this occasion. I'll update with my chip time and some photos when the race organizers post them.

Pretty close :p Sweet race though, especially if course is certified and accurate. You're getting close to that point where you can start thinking about sub 16. Anybody running 34 is super legit though...not to mention winning is quite fun. You win wire to wire or blow some people out?

The symptoms pretty much perfectly match the IT band syndrome (lateral knee pain worse when running, sitting down for a long time and then trying to walk around, etc.). I was trying to rest and do some light runs, but I ended up running a 10k yesterday for a fundraiser because it was for someone I knew personally and I wanted to contribute. It was at an easy pace, but now the pain is pretty noticeable when I'm going up the stairs and I can feel it even while I'm just walking. So, I limped to the starting line and somehow still got a PR. Apparently I had forgotten for a while that it was actually a 4 mile race instead of 5k. Finished it at 6:54 average pace, which is slightly faster than my 5k record, and I have a feeling that my 4th mile probably took ~8 minutes or maybe longer because I stopped twice to walk between mile 3 and mile 4. While I'm satisfied with my time especially given the ITBS, I'm not happy that I stopped to walk three times (~2.5 mile, ~3 mile, ~3.5 mile). Knee pain did partially contribute, but I think it was mostly that I felt out of breath and wanted to stop. I feel that my mental aspect has been weakened in the past couple of months. Including this one, I've stopped several times during my most recent couple of races (HM and 4 mile), which I had not done in the past. In any case, I expect that I will have to take the next couple weeks off because I'm pretty sure I've exacerbated my knee and it feels painful to walk. I don't regret going out to run today though ![]()

Turned out pretty well but I really didn't do the miles to put in a strong effort. I walked 8 times in the duration of the race including a nice bathroom break on mile 5 :D Here's a link to the race on my GPS watch LINK. Finished with a 1:29:46 53rd out 5360 with only minor leg/foot pain ![]() It doesn't look like you ever dropped below 11:30min/mile or so pace while you're walking! When I walk, I drop to like 17:30. Are you quite tall by any chance?

I'm only 5'9 and I stopped at most of the water stops to drink properly ![]()

My Garmin shows the route as 9.92km. I'm not sure which distance to trust there (e.g. I might have hit the "start" button past the official measured start line or whatever), but my actual time my be something ~15 seconds slower than that. Second place was 35:11. The dude stuck with me for the first 3km or so, but then dropped off when we hit the main hill on the course. I was at the front for the entire race, which felt a bit weird. I'm not certain I couldn't have gone a bit faster if I had someone to really duel with over the duration of the course – I had enough juice left for a decent sprint over the last 200m, and didn't really feel particularly tired afterwards. This morning, my legs complained a little bit, but that went away after 500m or so into my run. Seems I may need to further acclimate myself to the suffering involved in racing.

I have to say I haven't found my "comfortable" run pace yet, It's still a struggle to keep running after the third or so of run portion. I'm still trying to slow my pace, but I'm still running at a 9min/mile pace looking at my logs. I thought I was going to die on the last minute of running today, but I finished strong and I'm sure my efforts will pay dividends when I can easily do the same workout a month from now. For now I feel good after my workouts and that's all that matters to me at the moment. Hoping to be able to complete a 5k without walking by the end of the summer.

This tells me your still definitely too fast on the run portions, or not using enough recovery. Either control your run pace better, or have longer walking intervals and/or shorter running intervals. You really don't want to be running anywhere remotely near that level of intensity yet. There is a time and place for that if you want to train to become a good runner, but the foundation isn't there yet. You should feel quite good while running (not to mention afterwords!), feeling like your about to die is what we want to save for that last mile+ of a 5k race, not everyday runs. Aside from that nice work and keep at it!

If you're at the stage in your running where you're just working to get in the correct shape to be able to run (i.e weight loss or getting basic fitness back) then it's detrimental to really push yourself too hard because you'll just need longer to recover. If you work 10-20% less hard you'll probably find you can cover twice as many miles across the course of a week or month than if you're really, really going for it. The only time you want to be absolutely hitting your limit is in a competitive/organised race. If you are trying to lose weight than you should be trying to run slowly for long periods not quickly for only a minute at a time, you'll get down to that BMI sweet spot of 19-22 (approx) that you want for running much faster and that's when you can start looking into your speed.

Something with a 33 in the start seems like a good goal, but I think the course has stairs in it, so who knows. Also, because I am exceedingly vain, a race photo! This is about a mile from the finish. The other runners are in the 5k. + Show Spoiler + ![]()

If anyone is interested, I talked with one of the girls at the Nike Running store in Toronto. She said that the difference between the Nike Free Runs and the Nike Free 5.0 is nothing. The Free Runs started as the Nike Free 5.0, then were renamed as the Nike Free Runs, then back now to the Nike Free 5.0. The 5.0 designates how much the shoe feels like you're running barefoot. The Nike Free 3.0 might as well be barefoot, while the 4.0 is less, and the 5.0 is more "normal". I took the 5.0 for now, but really I'm being stalled by some weird injury. I'm getting weird pain at the bottom of my right lung when I do heavier breathing. First time experiencing it walking today, but I get it sometimes when I run. Happens within like 200m of starting, and gets progressively worse. I can try to run through it but it hurts after a couple km. Anyone else have anything similar in the past? This has been recurrent for many years now, only during running... >< I don't think I ever get this during badminton or swimming or other stuff. :/ I just walked instead today :\
