I can't seem to lose weight :\
2 weeks ago, I was at 151lb/68.5kg. Now, 150lb/68.0kg. I'm 5'7" and do 3x5 bench @ 205lb/93kg, 1x5 deadlift @ 295lb/134kg (no squats since injury ~3-4 months ago). I was pretty content with my strength, so I've been trying to cut for the summer for about 3 weeks now. But no progress. I do try to weigh myself right after I wake up also.
Anyway, for the past 3 weeks, I've been eating strict paleo AND lowered my caloric intake by ~200 of my daily caloric needs that I calculated online. If I'm not mistaken, isn't paleo (or any low carb diet) supposed to be enough to help me lose weight? Any advice?
This is pretty much what I mainly eat each day: 5 eggs using about a tbsp coconut oil and 2-3 chicken breasts to fulfill my protein/bw. Lettuce, an avocado, ~2 bananas and 2 oranges. Something like that.

My parents have it ingrained in their brains that pills are only suitable for old people.
|
billy5000: eating 200 kcal less than maintenance for 2 weeks and losing 1 pound sounds about right, even on a low carb diet. You're going to have to eat less, burn more, or just live with the progress you're making. It's not like you need to lose much weight at 5'7" 150 lbs anyway.
|
So I decided to scrap the idea of adding cardio for now. With my squat/deadlift I'm adding weight consistently and it's challenging but I get it done with decent form. However today I know for sure my form was off with my squat. Next workout do I just add the full amount of weight anyway or should I be careful and just repeat todays weight with more focus on form. My bench and oh press are awful. Compared to my squat/dl ic consistently can't get through a 3x5 on those. How do I proceed form here?
I don't think it's a sleep/calories issue seeing how my other lifts are going up consistently.
|
When it starts to get challenging, personally, I would increase weights to either squat or deadlift but not both (assuming you do those on the same day).
For bench, try benching as your first exercise. I've been switching around my workouts due to the excessive people at the gym, and I found out - to me at least - that I can do my 1st exercise with ease with proper warmup. The only exception being deadlifts first because I end up giving half effort to my other workouts lol

You dont have to eat low carb to lose weight. Also try a 500cal deficit rather than 200. See how that goes
|
I can't. Well, more precisely, I don't think I want to stop eating paleo which I started a few months ago. I've already had a weak stomach to begin with, but I've become so intolerant to a lot of non-paleo foods during that time that I begin to smirk whenever I think about the days in the bathroom after I "cheated" lol.
But yeah, thanks for the suggestions. I'll start doing a 500cal deficit instead of 200, which I had mistaken to be enough since I was already on a low carb diet.

Hi, I'm a 14 year old guy and I actually have a sort of general question that's probably been asked/answered multiple times, but I just really am not sure.
I'm not in bad shape, I'm about 5' 6", weigh 130 lbs and am pretty decently in shape. I am not great at running (I have bad allergies D: ) but I do a lot of weight lifting at my gym. Now, here's the catch: My mom doesn't want me to do free weights, I am restricted to the resistance machines and weight machines.
How bad is it to use weight machines compared to free weights? I have been getting good results from it (I do basic machines, generally the front row, back row, incline bench, chest press, a few different ab machines, a couple of leg machines, etc.) and I've had good progress, but am I hindering myself greatly by not using free weights? Sorry if this isn't the right thread, I just am not sure where to post this =/

What is your goal? The machines generally have less potential to cause injuries as they generally limit the directions of movement. Free weights are good and provided you have someone watch you and make sure your doing it 100% ok it would be advantageous to mix in a little free weights. That being said with your age and already getting results I would stick with what your doing for now- don't expect to put on massive ammounts of muscle at 14 y.o. If want to be lean and strong you don't need free weights. You should mix in some push ups, squats (non weighted) and chin ups.
Also what allergies? Current medication/diet?

Just looking at your diet- a lot of fruit- not much veg. Try mixing in more veg with less emphasis on fruits particularly the high sugar content fruits. 2 bananas and 2 oranges is already a carb load of around 80 grams (roughly should aim for <100 per day).
If your eating paleo the weight loss will be gradual and generally not as extreme as with other diets, give it some time you seem to not be hugely out of shape so your weight loss will be slower than others particularly if it ins a stubborn area (insulin sensitive fat around the gut particualrly in men).
Other things to think about- are you getting plenty of good quality sleep? getting out doors- adequate vitamin D, are you stressed- any of these can make it hard to lose weight. How old are you? Anyway keep up what your doing have patience swap a few of those fruits for veges and I'm sure you will reap the benefits. I personally wouldn't get too carried away with calculating calories etc. make sure your exercising plenty of low level (walking etc.) with a few weight sessiosn and the occasional sprint. Whilst it can be useful to see what calories your eating if your sticking to low carb to lose weight your appetite should generally be a good guide.

Started free weights. Month later I felt stronger than I ever have. Just personal experience but I really think it makes a difference.

Keep paleo cause its awesome but ditch carbs (fruits). Eat them only on weekends or something. You will start losing weight

So I think I said this somewhere but a good two weeks ago I hit 200 lbs... and even though my goal had been to hit 215 and then worry about cutting, I am a vain man and I didn't like that I had hit 15% body fat. So I've seriously dropped my caloric intake from 5k a day to 1500-1800 and thus far I've lost about 10 lbs over the course of the two weeks. I'm pleased with results so far, and while my squats have only been increasing by 10lbs a week instead of the 15 I had been maintaining, I'm ok with that.
Here's my question. Today I weighed myself before working out in clothing: 192.2 (Today is my cheat day, I woke up yesterday weighing 190.2). Got back from my workout and I weighed 194.1. What...?
I don't drink while I exercise (habit I picked up when I wrestled, probably not optimal but now it's stuck in my head and I don't drink while working out) so it isn't that. Is there any other explanation for this? I'm not concerned about it, happened to me yesterday too and the day before that, just not to such a large amount. Finally hit me that maybe someone here knew why this was happening
Going to give a progress report of my gains shortly in the other thread, but I've been VERY pleased with SS. It's awesome!

My scale is mostly accurate, but sometimes it is not. I cannot think of any other reason to be honest. I wouldn't know about a mechanism that makes you heavier without consuming energy first.

I disagree. Losing weight is calories in vs calories out. If you want to lose weight you have to eat under your daily calorie maintenance. Use a calorie counter to figure out what that is and then eat 500cals underneath that.
How can eating paleo mean gradual weight loss if you eat the same amount of calories as any other diet? also are you talking about stress making him unable to lose weight because some people are more likely to eat when they are stressed? or something else?

Thats a pretty massive drop in calories man? Even at the end of my recent cut the lowest I ate was just under 2000 calories a day at 80kg (176 pounds)
You'll definielty lose muscle if you are dropping 5lbs a week. Ideally you should aim for 1lbs to 1.5 max. Don't want to lose all the muscle you've worked hard for!!

Im not sure why that would happen either. It is strange... In my opinion I don't think its worth weighing yourself multiple times a day or even every day. Your weight can fluctuate throughout the day for many reasons. I believe once a week on the same day (right after you wake up and take a shit preferably) you should record your weight. Overall will give a better indication.

Eslow mentioned it in the general nutrition recommendations thread under two approaches to weight loss. Although he doesn't explain why, my guess is that the body becomes more efficient in using fat rather than relying on carbs for energy. My problem was that I ate too much fruits.

I disagree with spacemonkeyy in that weight loss will be more gradual with a paleo diet (for a given caloric deficit, that is), but keep in mind that although losing weight is technically "calories in vs calories out," what we're discovering now is that the type of calories you take in actually affect your calories out. There are all sorts of things related to the thermic effect of food (meal frequency/size can affect calories out) as well as leptin and body set-point (type of calories in can affect calories out). Stress/sleep can also affect calories out.

Quality of foods.... e.g. Paleo.... has lots of foods taht are lower in caloric density. This reduces calories.
Most of the equation is kcals in vs kcals out, but there is some slight effect on improving other biomarkers and changing kcals out.
So just assume for the sake of argument that its kcals in vs kcals out.
Obviously, its easier to do it with a quality of food diet where you're taking in less calorie dense foods b/c of satiety.
