At that price, it's probably a better investment to buy some weights as you need them. If you plan on lifting for a decent amount of time, might as well work out at home... especially if you already have the barbell and a power cage. Check out craigslist, should find some cheap plates there. Talk to your family about how it's the better investment.
Edit: 400 posts from me on TL now - I can say with absolute certainty that at least 200 of them are in this thread, or it's predecessors, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were actually 250 or 300.

Not the olympic barbell. It's only 15lbs :/
I live in pleasanton/san ramon/dublin CA. One fairly nearby place is http://crossfitsr.com/ but it's 100/month. And 24 hour is 60/month. I can't find anything under that :/

tbh if I were in your shoes (with my parents looking over my shoulder and criticizing my program), I'd just go to the gym. Didn't you say in this thread that you have a good amount of money saved up?

Yeah. That's still a ton though.
Parents gave up on criticizing it when they saw I was making gains. Only point of contention is GOMAD, which is unrelated to gym
A little background - I am 5'9" and weighed 181 pounds on 5/5. On that day is when I started to track my calories. Prior to the fifth, I kind of just ate when I was bored and didnt care what I was eating. I just did it while at the computer (which is frequent ) and just ate and ate. I wouldnt say I gained a lot of weight from it, but I still wanted to control what I ate and get thinner. My goal is 160~ pounds by whenever I get there. So far, on 5/9 when I woke up this morning, I weighed 177. Thats four pounds lost in 4 days. Is that healthy? I don't exercise often, besides occasional mile jogs and some light weight lifting/calisthenics. Ive been controlling what Ive eaten and only had a recommended serving size of snacks and such, and have only been eating like 1300-1500 calories. I had someone at work today mention that losing 4 pounds in four days isnt healthy, and it got me curious. I know when you first start trying to lose weight you lose weight faster, and then eventually you start to lose less and less. Since this is my first week, is that a healthy amount to have lost? Am I going about things correctly? Id like to keep eating like I am, although eating a little more calorie-wise every day would be fine. I havent been really hungry because Ive been eating something small every two hours. I could exercise more, but with a few personal issues, its really hard for me to get up and make myself exercise more than I already go :/

It's all water weight. Typical pound of fat is gonna be a 3500 calorie deficit, and there's really no way you're gonna lose 4 pounds of fat in 4 days unless you are an overweight michael phelps. It is also more than likely that you will weigh yourself in at more than 181 in the next week or so, and you might be frustrated, but again it's all fluctuations in water weight.
Using a rolling average to keep track of your weight (weighing yourself at the same time of day) is the way to do it. I think that the hacker diet provides some excel templates you can play with.
Peter musa so sick. That girl is pretty awesome too. Damn power/squat jerkers, seems so badass compared to split lol. I wish i could figure the jerk out T_T Once i break like 80-90% it feels so shitty.

haha yeah i thought that was funny.
Just put my days eating into fitday...i'm still like 500-1000 calories short T_T NEED MORE FOOD. Gonna start smashing more milk and maybe picking up some food so i dont feel so bad about telling my parents to buy me stupid amounts of food lol. Roughly 45/30/25 on fat/protein/carbs with over 1g/pound for protein.

If I really truly can't do that, is there anything else I should do except for nomnomnom?
haha i'm just having trouble cause i'm like twice your size and go through a lot more calories at work and during my workouts. You just keep eating everything you can and you should be fine, i wouldn't worry that much about calories as long as you can honestly say you're eating 2-3x what the smaller weaker froadac did!

Hehehe.
Can't say that I"m eating 2-3x as much. So time to eat more.

Did you bench yesterday? and perhaps rest your head on the bench while doing reps?

just flat out don't squat in a smyth machine. I did it for a month or so and that shit injures you.

so that's why my neck has been bothering me!!!!
Rippletoe talks about that in SS. Says that head should be on the bench, but that neck muscles should be tensed. Not pushing into the bench, jsut resting on it.

As my deadlift and squat approach 80 pounds, I'm running out of weights. I got a powerrack from my cousin (well, will have in a month or so) but need some sort of barbell set, it would seem.

There are dirt cheap 2 year memberships for 24 hour fitness that you can find at costco. Note that this only works for "Sport" level 24 hour fitness gyms.
FWIW I'm under a 3 year contract @ the SuperSports level at 24.
oh, and I live in Palo Alto fwiw. Unfortunately I don't have any equipment that I could potentially lend you =\

I have a few vague goals in mind and that is to lose weight and have a better diet. I'll make these more specific in a minute.
Right now my current situation is that I'm a full time student and I teach as well as playing in symphonies so I keep myself busy with work school and travel. This affects my diet in that I eat a lot of fast food, I rarely ever prepare anything outside of ramen or some quick pasta in my home. I went on a steaming kick a few weeks ago where I was steaming vegetables and fish but that lasted all of like 5 days before I just couldn't have enough to eat, and I was always hungry. I tried throwing in rice but it was so tasteless in the mix that I couldn't bring myself to eat it.
A major problem I have is that I eat too much every time I eat; I eat past the point of being satisfied and always end up feeling overfull. And I just know the portions I'm eating are way larger than they should be.
My current body type is at least slightly overweight but not terribly bad. I'm 6'0" and weigh about 220lbs without a muscle mass to my name, so a high body fat percentage. I have a gut which is the number one thing I want to get rid of, so I can just have a more uniform body style and fit into a normal medium sized shirt.
So what I really need help with is finding a way to fit a healthier diet into a really busy lifestyle, something that doesn't take much TIME to prepare, in enough variety to keep my unfortunately low will power personality entertained to keep it going. Also exercise ideas to go along with this would be wonderful.
Thanks for any feedback, I look forward to getting myself healthy this summer.
6 feet tall @ 220 lbs with no muscle is 'fat' imo.
Personal dietary suggestion - get rid of all your processed carbs, all your processed sugars, and any liquid calories. Eat like a caveman - veggies and meats.
