Also wow I can't remember the last time I saw an argument about who has been trolling whom on an online forum. That seems wrong.

It was Denmark vs Austria so I guess the players took it a bit lax considering it was just practice for the World Cup. Cant wait to see Denmark vs US. :D

All I remember is the ref dropping the puck, sticks being dropped, gloves being thrown and a fight breaking out, not even sure the game clock had ticked before it got stopped, lol. The first second fights due to bad blood from the teams' last game are the best. lol ![]()

I'd call it more part of the history of the sport and Canada as a nation than a spectacle. Its part of tradition. Certainly it has been around longer than Hockey has been a spectator sport. When Europeans first settled "The New World", they went from fairly strong rule of law, to living under rule of British law. Any crime had to be reported to local authorities (likely a multiple day trip), and local authorities didn't actually have any real ability to judge per British Law, so for anything serious it had to be written out and then sent back over seas to be dealt with by British courts, then sent back. This was obviously quite... ridiculous. We're talking at times 3+ years before a ruling could get made! So people policed each other, and lived by a so called social contract or code of honour. This "Code" was transitioned over to sports we played... namely hockey. Around the second half of the 19th century, when we politely asked for confederacy, we were able to establish our own courts, however "the code" still exists in hockey today. Its also worth noting the relative poverty of our nation at the time, and the extremely difficult life most settlers lived. -40degC winters with no heat, living off the land in huts It was also quite common for rinks to be maintained by the same community league that hosted all other sports, with Boxing being the second most popular sport of the time. Hockey is faster and played on a smaller rink, and has rules that encourage physical play. The reality is that it is impossible for officials to see everything on the ice, and the game is largely cleaner when players are allowed to hold each other accountable, with some exceptions. It adds a considerable extra dimension to hockey that in many sports that doesn't exist. Intimidation is a big factor in hockey; every play is physical, you're constantly leaning on one another. That little fear in the back of your mind causes hesitation and can be a huge advantage. Maybe not as much so now with the instigator rule (if one guy starts a fight, then he gets a bigger penalty), but for a long time due to the physical nature of the sport, enforcers were used to create space for star players. Gretzky wouldn't have been able to be the player he was if Semenko wasn't there to beat the piss out of anyone who looked at him funny. Well, he likely still would have been the best of all time, but not to the same extent. Even today, big tough players that can keep up with the play have a huge advantage in Ice Hockey. In the videos I posted above, if Lucic wasn't the biggest and toughest guy in the league at that time he doesn't get away with that hit on the goaltender at all, and really if it wasn't for the large tear they went on after that game where Lucic hit on Miller they maybe don't even make the playoffs that year, let alone win the Stanley cup!

In the fighting leagues people ate more careful because they dont want to get punched in the face. There is also less shit talk. I prefer to play in rec leagues that allow it. What a weird ass sport.

We like to play and watch rough sports. I definitely agree with Jimmi, fighting leagues are way better, you dont get slashed in the ankles, and can likely come home without a bunch of debilitating bruises to suffer through the next day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
