+ Show Spoiler + Pack 1: I try to go RW after my first picks but R cut, and G dinos cut (not sure I'd like to draft that anyway). I know my neighbour's pick 2 was Contract Killing (pack misses a rare and common, no other black common). Nothing sexy in blue but pick 6 or so is Vineshaper Mystic which looks like a signal... until the pack doesn't have much else for merfolks. Pack 2: First pick Hostage Taker over Pious Interdiction 'cause I'll splash it no matter what I pair with my W. Packs have several B cards and I realise there's another BW drafter when Bishop of the Bloodstained doesn't wheel. I snag Glorifier of Dusk and Deathless Ancient as payoffs, but about no vampires. G is flowing ridiculously hard and there's some U, considering I thought it'd be picked, and there are merfolks this time. Wheel a Mark of the Vampire. Pack 3: this is basically merfolks + red (3+ cards per pack, the fuck are people doing). I get the Repeat Arrows or something pick 5 or so, pick 6 there's Air Elemental and I'd pick it if it wasn't UU, then pick 7 there's a Drover of the Mighty, either people have switched (some did) or there's some stupid shit going on with pack (happened too). At that point I realise I probably should have been UW pile and not BW, I'm cut harder than I thought. Pick 11 Deeproot Champion, and with that and Deeproot Warrior pick 11 it turns out my sit was merfolk, it's just that we opened absolute jack shit for them overall pack 1 so there was no way f or me to know. At least two people moved to tricolour, 3 of them had very clear archetypes, and the rest of us got fucked by weird signals and packs. + Show Spoiler + BW (me) - UG - UW - UBr - RW - BW - RG - URb My neighbour wasn't blue at first, he thought it was open because we didn't see much quality pack 1 but pack 2 was much better and he moved back into it simply because people couldn't cut everything since both of them were in a line (URb, my other neighbour, waffled around red/black at first). He got rewarded pack 3 when a lot of good blue flowed because of a better opening, and my right neighbour getting into blue but still passing bombs like fucking Air Elemental. RW, BW and RG were the ones with very clear colours from the start. I have no idea what kind of shit was going on tho, because BW passed Adanto Vanguard during the 3 first picks pack 2 to RW, and RG somehow received a Charging Monstrosaur—the fuck, that card's just one you splash regardless of your deck 80% of the time! With more logical openings (pack 1 was super slanted and it was felt by all from me to UBr who fought for dregs, as a result were unsure of not just colours, but even our tribes) I think I'd have ended into merfolks pack 1 after throwing away my first 4 picks (I would have after Vineshaper Mystic if I'd received merfolk creatures but zil), and it'd have changed the landscape a bunch, depending on whether my right neighbour would have forced blue based on what was opened. Yango is going to say that I'm asking for magical christmas land, but having so much of our choices and colours dictated by slanted openings (in both colours and sits) in packs 1 and 2 is kinda annoying. I have no agency on that so although my sit was merfolk, I couldn't know from pack 1 and my neighbour switching pack 2 would probably have cut me anyway (since it was based on what they opened and he saw, and not at all on what was passed pack 1, from what they said). Basically I'm running some cheap removal/tricks, a glute of 2-drops to survive, and... "well I have a pile, with Hostage Taker, Glorifier of Dusk and Deathless Ancient (6 vampires total counting him), let's pray." Match 1 vs RW aggro So I mull 1-lander both games, draw 2 creatures that are my 1-power ones so I can't even trade, and my opponent plays more creatures and makes me wonder why the fuck his vampire neighbour passed him Adanto Vanguard. Not much to say, mana fucks you over, opp has Rallying Roar both games to blow my blocks out too and then I have no creatures to cast and an empty board so I let him swing twice in a row, yay. Match 2 vs BW vampires Game 1 goes t2 queen bay's soldier, t3 queen's commission, t4 same, t5 Vanquisher's Banner. Vanquish the Weak on the bear, block a token, take 6 go to 11, he gains 8 goes to 25. I look at my hand and sigh in relief, with the only out in the deck staring back at me. I slam Hostage Taker and take the Banner, then cast it turn 6 naming Vampires myself. It saves my hide while I draw another 3 lands in a row (opp on 9 spells 5 lands when I'm on 9 lands 5 spells right before I draw my next creature, RIP). He peters out and I have flyers so while it takes awhile I finish him. Game 2 it's his turn to draw a bit more lands, I trade his early creatures for my Slash of Talons, then without the Banner offer trades if his tokens multiblock before blowing him out with Rallying Roar, he scoops. Match 3 vs UW Game 1 is disgusting as my pile goes Duskborne Skymarcher -> Bishop's Soldier -> Hammerskull -> Mark of the Vampire on Hammerskull, remove his only untapped creature. t5 he's tapped out too (important as he's got Siren Stormtamer), remove his own Bishop's Soldier with Hostage Taker, swing all, eat his non-tapped blocker with Vampire's Zeal, he scoops. Game 2 he mulls to 6 and misses hi 3rd land drop, then is colour screwed (tho he's got treasures), so bears + mark (which forces his bounce) make him scoop again. Was yesterday's winner who I literally gave away from Hostage Taker to with the Banner pass, sadly his lack of luck won't settle it since I'm only 2-1. My r2 opponent proceeds to draw in their final match so I have the worst breakers and can't even nab one of the Searches for Azcanta we opened. Well, screw me. My left neighbour, the usual winner, takes it courtesy of RG getting screwed twice in round 2 (they played some other games, and RG consistently smashed him, UG explore winner has good cards like Ranging Raptors and Snapping Sailback but he's too slow to prevent the 6/6 or Montrosaur/Regisaur from taking over), and RW aggro flooding a bit too in the finals. Also that Air Elemental doing work after I passed it. After that freakin' trainwreck I had, and the feelsbad of last week when I already got forced into BW because all other colours were simply cut, I'm really not a fan of the way this set goes about things. The games themselves still don't look very complex (tho drafting a bunch of tricks and Slash of Talon which is actually a very good card if you're not RW aggro), and the draft has been pretty frustrating and apparently prone to that "lopsided colour distribution in packs" (which really shows in the colour repartition on our table, and who got a straightforward draft and who tried to salvage a pile; the table was split in 2 strings of 4), especially for the 2-colour tribes. Since synergy -> good stuff in general (unless you drafted a bunch of explore creatures and get lucky during games, apparently, which doesn't sound like a reliable plan), switching after your first picks feels like what's needed if a tribe isn't open, but also very risky because you're throwing the following picks if the new tribe's going to get picked to your left or it's not very open so that even late pack 1 you still get playable stuff. I really felt that when I saw the merfolk: "R's cut, G has few creatures and 0 dinos, so my W humans don't pair with anything, but do I sack all that and gamble on merfolk?" Watching that Air Elemental and Drover of the Might put in work really drives the point home for me though: if pack/your neighbours prevent you from having a straightforward draft, this feels like a format where you'll fall behind people who've got to keep their comfortable early picks in their deck, because of the synergy and importance of stronger cards in a flat set. Considering the flat power level, I'm going to be a lot more proactive about counter-picking and sabotaging other people when the pod fucks up and starts feeding somebody very strong cards as late as pick 8. I already did that a lot when packs were lopsided and there was nothing for me (I remember when people to my left switched mid-pack 2 in HOU and basically made me spend the last 6-7 picks not having anything for me, not even a 24rd card in my colours, so I counterpicked 5+ cards over the course of the draft, adding "empty" pack 3 picks). With all the garbage that's in this set, rather than pick a 28th playable, or the last card in my colour no matter how shitty it is for the purpose of signaling, I'd rather power down everyone else to raise my chances.

I'd rather power down everyone else to raise my chances. But you're not powering down "everyone else". You're just powering down 1-2 people near you. People on one half of the table fighting with each other doesn't do anything to the other side of the table. This is why the EV of hate-drafting is so shit. Hating a card probably only hurt 1 person at your draft, who you have a <50% chance of ever playing at all. If people around you suck at finding their lane and pick all over the place it sucks, but hate-drafting is only going to hurt your EV, not help it.

(People keep switching colours or making weird things at the LGS then rant whenever I mention being short on playables and having ended up cutting stuff since there was nothing for me. I remember getting mean looks because I cut Gust Walker P3P6 knowing my neighbour was RW, because there was literally nothing for me in the pack during 3x AKH. Well don't put me in a position where it's actually the best I can do for myself, guys!)

+ Show Spoiler + http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/3-0-fnm-fishies/ Draft: First pick Waker of the Wilds because that card is friggin bonkers. For whatever reason I keep getting it in my sealed pools and keep winning with it. Second pick Shapers of Nature passing up a Charging Monstrosaur. I got passed a whole bunch of solid red after like Unfriendly Fire, the 1/2 give dinos haste guy, and the 3/3-->5/3 trample raptors so I probably should have been GR maybe-dinosaurs-but-maybe-not. I think a bunch of that was in the same pack so I couldn't have picked all of it anyway? I dunno. I ended up going hardcore in on Merfolk because of those first two picks. Got a few decent Fish payoffs, managed to snag the Jade Guardian + One with the Wind combo, and passed basically every rare and mythic that was passed my way because they were all more or less garbage. Passed Ranging Raptors pack 3 over something that I forget which was a tough choice but I think it was the right one there...don't remember why. I didn't see a single River Herald's Boon which sucked, and a guy three seats down drafted Kopala, Growing Rites, Ripjaw Raptor and the mythic Merfolk. He works at the store so I think he dropped or something but jeeeeeeez. I could have rare drafted a couple lands but meh. Axis of Mortality went to literally last pick. Didn't feel great about the deck going in as I had barely any spells to support my fish and looking at the deck quality around me it looked like it was gonna be a tough time. I sided in Crushing Canopy early over Crash the Ramparts and never sided it back out. I think technically that's illegal buuut...casual FNM. Match 1 vs RB aggro + Show Spoiler + This was a guy who literally started MTG a month ago. His deck was actually halfway decent, he had a lot of good cards but he didn't have a great idea of what he was doing. No mechanical mistakes really but he would attack his 3/3 menace pirates into my double blockers for no real reason at all. Game 1 wasn't particularly close but game 2 actually was, I just managed to win before he burnt me out. He almost killed me with a couple Hijacks and I nearly had a heart attack when he attempted to steal my 6/6 flier, except then I remembered it was Jade Guardian and he couldn't. Record: 1-0 Match 2 vs UB stuff + Show Spoiler + This guy got a bye Match 1, then proceeds to get stuck on two lands Game 1 and flood out game 2. I guess he wasn't destined to play magic tonight---I felt really bad so we ended up playing a bunch of games after that were much closer. (Also because Game 1 I curved 2 drop into Shapers into Waker and I never got to see the outcome of what is essentially the best my deck is capable of). He had a lot of counterspells and removal and won a game but I won 2 more just droppin' fishies and things. Record: 2-0 Aside: So this store I've been going to lately might be the best one yet. I can draft late at a time that doesn't interfere with family, and they ALWAYS HAVE ENOUGH People. I just wish it wasn't 40 minutes away. There were two pods tonight but we almost did a 12-man pod before more showed lol. The prizing, as it turns out, is also fantastic. For 2 pods (15 people) the top 4 overall get $15 plus the new FNM promo double-sided tokens (yay. Not like it would have been nice to get these when Fatal Pushes were still going around...sigh). So all of us 2-0 players all drew and I played the third match against my would-be opponent. Match 3 vs UB Pirates + Show Spoiler + Basically just ran him over both games. He played a bunch of 2/1 treasure makers, 2/2 raid draw a card, he played two Siren's Ruse to blink pirates and draw cards, he played the 4 mana draw 2 spell...literally all this guy did for the entirety of Game 1 was draw cards and nothing else. He stalled, drew probably 10+ more cards than me over the course of the game and I ran him over. Game 2 he mulled to 6 but had a better draw, playing a few fliers (which I had no trouble removing with Pounce/blocking) and then the XUU Mind Control to steal my Shapers, but Jade Guardians are really nice in situations like that. He was even able to use his Treasures to put counters and remove them to draw even more cards but yeah, he didn't accomplish much. Fun value deck and he was surprised himself he was able to go 2-0---I think the matchup vs my deck just ended up being sorta terrible, though I really was curious how he closed out any other games with no high powered creatures, some bounce and almost no true removal, a handful of fliers and a Tempest Caller. Final Record: 3-0 As a final note I don't know what it is about this format but I seem to constantly end up in merfolk-y decks that I think are bad/won't perform and then I end up absolutely crushing with them. I think I've also been kind of lucky in terms of variance both in the opponents I've played against and my draws/vs theirs, but still. My record so far over all of Ixalan is pretty ridiculous. MTGO Events I'm 7-2 and 5-4 in Sealed, and 2-1 and 3-0 in drafts. In Paper Events I'm 2-1 and 2-0-1 in Sealed and 3-0 in Draft. This adds up to 17-7 in all online matches, and 7-1-1 in paper. That's 24-8-1 overall for almost a 75% winrate over 33 matches. I don't think I've done this well since Eldritch Moon...and hell I'm not sure I've EVER done this well. Something about this format....I'm current well into the positives on MTGO so I'm just gonna keep riding my skill and/or luck through this format and play the hell out of it. My thoughts on the format is it's pretty curve dependent, very aggressive overall (though unlike AKH you CAN be defensive) and a lot of fun.I think one thing I've noticed aside from how important curving out seems to be, is that most of my decks have relatively few noncreature spells. I wonder if because the removal in this set is sort of poor, just playing like 18-19 creatures just works better...? Ok I bragged a lot in this post. Feel free to ignore it, but I'm kinda proud of myself and wanted to document stuff so far.

I think the "low non-creature spells" thing is also because this format punishes the player who isn't active early pretty hard (see the guy who scooped because I attacked for 5 on turn 3 and he didn't have a blocker). People keep saying "at least you can block unlike AKH" but you don't want to be doing the blocking against Tilonalli's Knight or Deeproot Warrior most of the time, I compare this format to KLD instead—miss a 2-drop when your opponent is curving out? You're dead. Making sure you can develop your board early to fight back against curve-outs or be able to double block bigger creatures pushes people to prioritise low drops a lot. And they don't necessarily consider the tricks to make for the lack of removal (which everyone fights over). On that matter, how did your early game go? It looks like your deck was pretty soft to aggro since you only had 3 2-drops and were low on interaction, although 2x Watertrap Weaver helps a lot with stabilising and 2x Shaper + Mystic make a very solid 3-drop slot. I kinda want to draft Merfolk because while most of the people at the store realised Herald's Boon is a strong card, they have no respect for auras nor for a lot of tricks and I'm sure I could abuse that pretty hard (like I did early AKH when I was the only one giving Cartouche of Zeal any non-"shit card" evaluation). They'd lose virtually every game to a fatty + one with the wind, flyer/vanguard + mark of the vampire combo, or jade guardian + any of them and still not consider Crushing Canopy a maindeckable card. Another thing I noticed is that while AKH block only let W deal with enchantments, here it's reversed with W unable to deal with artifacts. Dunno how I like it, especially with Pirate Cutlass and Banner easily justifying boarding some in.

He played the budget Ramunap Red I lent him, and his booster contained Glorybringer, Earthshaker Khenra, foil Trial of Solidarity and the promo land was a mountain. He's on theme. (I opened Gideon in mine and a Hostage Taker in the prize packs, woo!) And the friend I'm seeing tonight passed by the store fortuitiously and entered. So evening went from "everyone to a bar" which seemed implied to "set hour, Blade Runner at the movies" and I didn't have that planned at all, fuck! D: Sunday's gonna be all "things I should have done during the entire week-end." Watched it, liked it. Posted about it in the thread instead since there were a couple points I didn't necessarily get.
